Ann's got a mathematician's brain, in my opinion, and works everything out in the best way possible. That amazes me, since I belong to the Slapdash Stitching Club. Ann's backgrounds are gorgeous and you don't have to do all the steps. Sometimes I stop after one or two because I love the effect.</div><div><br /></div><div>You can see other color versions of Razzle-Dazzle here--</div><div><a href="https://njneedleartists.org/njna-workshops/sotm/2015-sotm-ruby-razzle-dazzle/">https://njneedleartists.org/njna-workshops/sotm/2015-sotm-ruby-razzle-dazzle/</a></div><div><br /></div><div>and another's here--</div><div><a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/379357968582197386/">https://www.pinterest.com/pin/379357968582197386/</a></div><div><br /></div><div>If you are charmed, then you can order the chart from Ann directly. Mary promises more information on Eco Vita later.</span></div><div><span style="color: black;"><a href="https://www.needlenthread.com/2024/02/preliminary-stitching-on-a-wee-wool-project.html">https://www.needlenthread.com/2024/02/preliminary-stitching-on-a-wee-wool-project.html</a></span></div><div><br /></div><div>Frankly, I love Appleton's crewel, so "cranky" isn't a term I'd apply to it. But everyone has a different take on threads. A lot depends on what you are stitching with it. I think Eco Vita would make a lovely belt in muted colors, maybe something with Medieval animals and motifs on it.</div><div><br /></div><div>By the way, DMC has a short article about how to use Eco Vita on their website.</div><div><a href="https://www.dmc.com/US/en/eco-vita-360?utm_source=Commonthread+Masterlist&utm_campaign=f47c5679d4-manual_weekly_Eco_Vita_Free_P_US_24_02_18&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_3a652561da-f47c5679d4-82831385&ct=t(manual_weekly_Eco_Vita_Free_P_US_24_02_18)&mc_cid=f47c5679d4&mc_eid=f7c1b12c64">https://www.dmc.com/US/en/eco-vita-360?utm_source=Commonthread+Masterlist&utm_campaign=f47c5679d4-manual_weekly_Eco_Vita_Free_P_US_24_02_18&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_3a652561da-f47c5679d4-82831385&ct=t(manual_weekly_Eco_Vita_Free_P_US_24_02_18)&mc_cid=f47c5679d4&mc_eid=f7c1b12c64</a></div><em><span style="color: black;"><strong>

They also sell laser cut cardboard forms for finishing (look under Shop/All Products) and acrylic templates for those who would like to use them for marking out the margins of background.</div><div><a href="https://islandhouseneedlepoint.com/product-category/1-templates/">https://islandhouseneedlepoint.com/product-category/1-templates/</a></div><div><br /></div><div>The Wool and the Floss also sells acrylic template sets. These have center lines to aid positioning just like the ones Island House sells. Neither template type is meant to replace acid free board for the insides of needlepoint ornaments and such, however. I think they might be a little thinner, but that's just a guess from studying the pictures.</div><div><a href="https://woolfloss.com/search?q=templates">https://woolfloss.com/search?q=templates</a></div><em><span style="color: black;"><strong>

Ghost stitches are a thin thread in a contrasting color stitched over the area where the compensation occurs. Because the thread is thin, you can see the paint underneath. This helps you figure out how to compensate the stitch at the edge of an area. Take a photo, rip out the ghost stitches and using the photo as a guide, stitch with the usual thread with the stitch truncated to fit.</div><div><a href="https://needlepoint.com/blogs/needlepoint-know-how/tips-tricks-of-compensating-stitches">https://needlepoint.com/blogs/needlepoint-know-how/tips-tricks-of-compensating-stitches</a></div><div><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></div><div>Melita takes photos of an area when she's trying to figure out compensation that looks good to her. Both ladies create very original, intricate stitches (which makes these books unsuitable for beginners who aren't going to understand the diagrams without help). Mindy English's books are not as well diagrammed--the photo Melita posted of the cover shows what you can expect--but they date from the 1980s to early 1990s when computer graphics weren't as good as they are today. </span></div><div><a href="https://melitastitches4fun.com/2024/02/08/books-in-my-library-the-canvas-embroidery-notebook-by-mindy-english-a-book-mix-up/">https://melitastitches4fun.com/2024/02/08/books-in-my-library-the-canvas-embroidery-notebook-by-mindy-english-a-book-mix-up/</a></div><div><br /></div><div>If you have a chance to pick up books by either author, do. Now Tricia Nguyen has taken years of research into Martha's life and distilled it into a $15 course on Martha Edlin's life and her stitching. </span></div><div><span style="color: black;"><a href="http://thistle-threads.blogspot.com/2024/02/martha-edlin-her-life-and-embroidery.html">http://thistle-threads.blogspot.com/2024/02/martha-edlin-her-life-and-embroidery.html</a></span></div><div><br /></div><div>Why is this important? $5 of the course fee will go to the Victoria and Albert Museum to do closeup photos of their embroidery. Most of us will never be able to visit the museum to study their extensive collections but good quality, detailed photographs will enable us to look at important pieces from the comfort of our living room.</div><div><br /></div><div>It's also important because the details of Martha's life in the last third of the 17th Century reveals a much richer, more nuanced portrait of what a stitcher's life back then was like. If you've ever wanted to make your mark on history, even in just a little way, it's important to support research like this. </div><div><br /></div><div>Here's where you sign up but note that once you pay, you only have 31 days to watch the videos. That's part of the deal Tricia made with the museum in order to get access to their Martha Edlin collection.</div><div><a href="https://thistle-threads.thinkific.com/courses/martha-edlin-her-life-and-embroidery">https://thistle-threads.thinkific.com/courses/martha-edlin-her-life-and-embroidery</a></div><div><br /></div><div>I often wonder what 21st Century stitchers will know about us. I suspect not much. Let's all pitch in and make Martha even more well-known, even if our own stitching history will vanish from the earth when we do. We owe it to her, to all other stitchers like her, and to ourselves.</div><div><br /></div><div>Thanks.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>UPDATE:</b> The latest YouTube video talks a bit more about the life of Martha Edlin, shows some of her work as displayed in the V&A Museum, and you'll learn how one goes about trying to piece together the life of a 17th Century woman.</div><div><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F17Z7PkQ5vw">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F17Z7PkQ5vw</a></div><em><span style="color: black;"><strong>

How to cope?!</span></div><div><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: black;">Ruth, being a genius, has a fun way of marking the stitch out she has chosen, making it very easy to work the stitch, even if you do have to compensate around the leaves and flowers. (If you need help with compensation, follow Ruth's link to her explanation of how compensation works.)</span></div><div><span style="color: black;"><a href="https://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/2024/02/counting-tip/">https://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/2024/02/counting-tip/</a></span></div><em><span style="color: black;"><strong>
