I use stem stitch a lot but I am never sure when what I call stem stitch is actually outline stitch. If you are as confused as I am about the difference between the two stitches, you'll want to bookmark this terrific article by Kathy Andrews that clearly explains the different between the two stitches and also talks about S and Z twist threads. Thanks, Kathy! This is great!

UPDATE: By coincidence Sandy Arthur also explains the difference in these two stitches for the July 2013 preview of Needlepoint Now magazine.

Thanks, Jane! I never really knew the difference either, but I don't use either of those stitches that much. I have, however, bookmarked that post for future reference.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the difference really but I use one (or both?) of them a lot. Great stitch for fur, feathers, flower petals, etc.
DeleteDear Jane,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for linking to my article about stem and outline stitch! I'm flattered that you gave credit to Mary Corbet, the undisputed queen of embroidery blogging.
