Introducing the Byzantine Icons by Designing Women

I had my next project all picked out until the friend I was going to virtually stitch it with fell ill. So I've put that project aside to give her time to feel better and instead, I'm going to stitch the little Byzantine icons I plan to give my nieces for Christmas. I've enjoyed stitching them little Christmas ornaments and have done many of them, but none have had religious themes. I think it is time I stitch something that really is in the spirit of the season and choose these two little pieces.

They are by Designing Women, a small company in Arkansas. You may have seen their chair series or their large royal portraits but they do lots of small designs. They don't have a website but I did find these links to show off the range of their painted canvases. They have a lot of Christmas stockings. My favorite of their designs are a series of little canvases that depict kids dressed in Christmas pageant costumes that come with little ceramic legs to dangle below the Christmas tree one child wears over his body. Or whatever. Here's an angel canvas but you don't see the legs that come with the canvas.

Here are most of their canvases.

The small ones are like little jewels.

They are famous for their crosses.

Apparently they do XS charts, too.

There are several small canvases in the Byzantine Icon series. Here is another. There are angels who wear pink, a blue Madonna, etc. They usually also face a slightly different way. You could stitch three angels and they'd all be different.

I hope this gives you a flavor of the breadth of their designs. My two little pieces came with a packet of pearls which you see in the photo above and with a simple stitch guide stapled to the back. The guide includes unusual stitches, though, like Palestrina Knots and Maltese stitch. The designs are on 14 count canvas that has been painted with gold metallic. The designs themselves are 5 inches high by 3 wide, so these will be a quick stitch. (I'll be facing more finishing again before the horror of the last week has faded. Yeah for me....)

I only have one pair of stretcher bars the same size so I picked up the Red Madonna and Child at random and started on it. Last night I stitched the Madonna's red cloak with a modified Scollops stitch from Brenda Hart's Stitches for the Millennium (page 90). I turned it on its side to echo the rounded shape of the figures in the center of the design. The figure 8 double halo shape is also rounded, so I'm thinking I might need another curved bargello-type stitch there but I suppose I need to figure out what metallic threads I will use on this first. I normally stitch on 18 count and don't have very fat metallics here but I'll improvise. Here's what the design looks like now that I've stitched the cloak--

Before I forget, I used a strand of Thread Gather's overdyed Sheep's Silk, which is a half wool/half silk thread. The color is Cranberry Swirl which comes in shades of cranberry red. I ignored the shading on the original design but because I used only one strand of Sheep's Silk, it doesn't completely cover the paint so you see some of the darker areas still.

Normally I would start with the background but since I need to pick a thread first that will work for both the background and the halo gold, I started with the figures. My next step will be to stitch the Madonna, working from the trim of the gold cloak out to her hair, and then her face. I might do the face and then add the hair on top. I'm not sure yet.

Stay tuned!

The Wisteria Teapot is Finished

The wisteria teapot ornament is made up into an ornament also. It's been a busy finishing week! I hope you can see that the loop is the same lavender Bucilla ribbon I used for some of the wisteria. I would have liked to have done little Japanese ribbon stitches and French knots in ribbon all around the edge of the piece but I assembled this by backing it with finishing foam covered in black felt. I sewed the backing to the front before I thought of using ribbon along the edges and it is too hard on the ribbon to get it stitched through the tight seam I made to use it as the edging. Next time I might put ribbon edging on before attaching the front to the back but that gives you the problem of being able to see the front and back to attach them to each other. I sew ornaments together instead of gluing them. With glue you wouldn't have this issue but I find glue awfully hard to handle.

Instead, I put a few ribbon stitches at the top where the loop is attached and then covered the seam all around the rest of the ornament with beads in two shades of purple and in crystal clear. I stitched a group of 2 clear beads, 4 light purple ones, 2 clear beads, 4 dark purples ones, 2 clear, etc. The four bead groups were stitched as a group and then couched, but I put the two crystal beads on my needle and stitched them as if they were one without couching. I think it looks pretty and feminine without overwhelming the ornament. Hope my mother likes it!

I'll wrap it and put it away for her birthday for now. Then I need to think about what project I should start next....

The Golden Rabbit Pet Guardian Angel is Done

I can see the finish line from here, despite the rain and fog we have this morning. Last night I put the Golden Rabbit together and added her trim. The Victorian Parakeet is next and then I'll work assembling the wisteria teapot.

I hate finishing but I must say making up 7 ornaments in a row makes it easier. I feel a lot more confident about finishing now.

Yummy!

The Needleartnut Blog is stitching a cupcake for a bride. It's an original line drawn piece on sparkly gold and ecru canvas and I can't wait for this to develop. Pat's rotating her stitching pieces so you have to scroll down to May 30 to see the outline and the threads she is using. Today's posting shows the metal cupcake tin all done and the start of the icing. Looks like she is using a bargello stitch for the icing itself but I'm not 100% sure. It's a mystery what the top will look like right now.

(Speaking of bargello, you might be interested in six clever (and free!) bargello ornament designs from Althea DeBrul which will be briefly available on the Bargello Needlepoint website.)

If you are wild about stitching cupcakes, you need to take a peek at Raymond Crawford's over-the-top little cupcakes. Go to Designs, then choose Cakes.

Pocket Full of Stitches is doing a monthly club of his stuff. Here's their page. It's a lot easier to see the stitches used here.

If you just like the real thing, a friend who is a librarian told me about this blog, which has the most beautiful cupcakes you'll ever see. Let's here it for the little cakes!

Two More Pet Guardian Angels Finished

Two more of the pet guardian angels are made up into ornaments, making the grand total of finished pieces four. I have two to go, the Georgian Rabbit and the Victorian Parakeet. The end is in sight! (Or course I have to make the wisteria teapot into an ornament also but we won't quibble at how much I have left to do, right? No one wants to see me burst into tears....)

Above is the Tudor Dog, which I call Holi because her colorful outfit and floral halo were inspired by Mexican floral embroideries and the Indian Festival of Color which is called Holi. Everybody seems to like Holi and she was a lot of fun. I'd encourage anyone to go outside their comfort zone occasionally and really cut loose with their stitching.

And here is the Baroque Fish. She is one of my favoriates as I love the colors and her silver halo and the stitches Kandy Merric created for her are magnificent.

The Golden Rabbit is tonight's finish. Wish me speedy fingers!
