Lisa at BeStitched has posted a video demonstrating the use of a flat iron (used to straighten hair) with various thread types to make them smooth and easier to stitch with.

Folks do warn us to keep the heat low and to get a cheap flat iron to use just for your threads since hair conditioning products will build up on your regular one if you use it on your hair.
