Destination Dallas News

I've been adding to the Destination Dallas 2013 section of Blog quite a bit, so remember to check in there to see the latest thing.  Just click on the tab located under the header to go there, then click on Home to come back to Blog's main page.  For those who wonder about the little paper umbrella photo I posted this morning, I've done another Leigh Designs model and stitch guide.  You can read all about it on the CH Stitch Guides blog.
http://chstitchguides.blogspot.com/2013/04/hibiscus-flowers-palm-fronds-mai-tai.html

Smart phone visitors remember to look for the little red triangle to the right of Home.  Click on that and you'll see a menu of tabs to choose from.  I don't know how Blog displays on iPads and Android tablets despite there surge in visitors here using these devices.  Perhaps someone will let us know in Comments?

Many thanks to all of you for showing up here each day.   Knowing you are counting on your daily dose of NP News keeps me blogging away.

The New and the Creative

There are some new fun things available.  Needle in a Haystack works with a woodworker to offer some charming little ort boxes.  The second link to the NIAH site has a lot of lovely wooden items, particularly the laying tools.

Ruth Schmuff has introduced a new type of snap tray--a small magnetic one for beads.

Not ready to spend a lot of money on a new tool?  Mary Corbet has a great substitute for an expensive floor stand.

All Rhodes

I don't always mention each and every posting that Joni Stevenson writes on her Creative Stitch blog, but that doesn't mean I don't read and study every word. This week Joni's discussion is about the Rhodes stitch and its creator.    Her first posting discusses compensating Rhodes stitches.
http://creative-stitch.blogspot.com/2013/04/rhodes-stitch-compensation.html

The second is a little about the stitch's creator, Mary Rhodes.
http://creative-stitch.blogspot.com/2013/04/do-you-know-about-mary-rhodes.html

I can tell from what Joni says that she reads stitch books not for new stitches, but for the information that the writers have beyond a particular stitch.  This information is priceless--it is wisdom from our stitching ancestors which we should cherish, ponder and listen to.

It might be time for me to rummage through my stitch library and pull out Art of Canvas Embroidery.  I may be experienced enough a stitcher to appreciate it now, which I certainly wasn't when I bought it in the late 1980s!

New Classes, New Threads

There are some spectacular new classes being offered I thought you would enjoy knowing about. In alphabetical order, BeStitched in Arizona is having a two-part class on Barbara Elmore's Ghost Cat.  Barbara posted photographs as she worked on the amazing metallic cat background and then needle felted roving on the cat's face.  If you are a cat lover or a collector of Halloween canvases, you will want to see this piece.
http://bestitchedneedlepoint.com/two-part-stitching-specatular-series/

Needle House in Houston has Laurie Walden teaching Peter Rabbit, a Labors of Love canvas.  I've seen slightly better photographs on Facebook and I must say, this is a showstopper as well.  The umbrella is amazing!
http://nystitchingsisters.blogspot.com/2013/04/peter-rabbit.html

Two canvases, both wonderful in their very different styles.  Click on the photos for a slightly better view.

For the threadaholics, Needle in a Haystack has great news.  They have Bella Lusso Twinkle and Diamant in stock now.  Twinkle is a rayon/metallic mix in a limited but very pretty range of colors.
http://www.needlestack.com/WebStore/Thread/GS_Twinkle.html

Bella Lusso is 100% merino wool from Fleur de Paris.  They don't stock all the available colors but will special order what you need.  The wool itself is soft to the touch and the colors are very soft and pretty as well.
http://www.needlestack.com/WebStore/Thread/FDP_BellaLusso.html

Diamant is a Japanese metallic thread distributed by DMC in Europe.  Needle in a Haystack is importing spools for our stitching pleasure.  The first link is to the colors on the NIAH site, the second link is to DMC's website with more information and better photographs of the available colors.
http://www.needlestack.com/WebStore/Thread/DMC_Diamant.html

http://www.dmccreative.co.uk/Products/Needlework-Threads/Embroidery-Threads/Diamant.aspx

Aren't we lucky to have such wonderful classes and threads available to us?!

CraftOptics: Light Magnifier Clipons

If you are interested in a light and/or magnifier that clips onto your glasses, then this review of CraftOptics' lens systems is something you need to read. It shows you exactly what the system is like and how it works.  This is very valuable information for those who are hesitant to spend that kind of money on clip on lights/magnifiers that might not work well for you.  It's also interesting to see other options than large light/magnifier systems which don't work well for everyone's stitching nest.

Reading Blogs on Smart Phones UPDATED

I decided I'd better reposting this update to the Destination Dallas article, just so as many folks as possible would see it.  Sorry if this is duplicate information for you!

Marsha just let me know that when she uses her smart phone to read Blog, she can't see the tabs to go to other sections of the site (like Destination Dallas).  We experimented a bit and she discovered that when she typed in the URL to go to Blog, she can see the tabs.  When she gets to Blog via a Google search, she can't.  I discovered that when I use my iPod Touch to read Blog, only the Home tab shows BUT there is a little red triangle to the right of the Home tab.  If I click on that, a list of all the tabs appears and I can choose the one I want to visit.  This should work for iPhones but I don't know about Android users. If you are a smart phone user (and about 500 people a week visit Blog via smartphones), you might want to know these things and play around with them.  Let me know what you find out, ok?   I use tabs more than any other blogger I know but quite a few people use 1-2 on their blog so this is important to know.  You might be missing something!

UPDATE:  Donna uses an Android phone and sees the red triangle when she visits Blog so this must be a universal way of handling multiple blog tabs.  Thanks for the info, Donna!

The Impact of the Internet

The designer SharonG sent me this link to a lecture on how the Internet has impacted hand made items in the arts and crafts world.  It touches on copyright theft, but really it's about how we are losing creativity through endless sources of information and access to informed critiques that will help us do better in our chosen art.

Destination Dallas Begins UPDATED

Destination Dallas, the Dallas trade show focused solely on needlepoint, is about to begin!  This is a show just for shop owners that shows off all sorts of products in a "cash and carry" show.  In other words, if the shops see something, they will buy it right then and carry it home to their happy customers.  New items will be in the shops next week!  There's no waiting for orders to be filled like the other shows in the year.  So start saving your pennies but do give your shop owner time to get home, unpack and take a nap.  These things are whirlwinds!  Here are the classes offered to shops that want to pick up new techniques.
http://destinationdallas.net/classes

This year I've done something different.  Instead of posting here on Blog's main page about al the fun, I have collected everything in the tab named Destination Dallas 2013. New information will be at the top of the page.   I have highlighted the tab so it stands out.  Click there and the latest info will be on top.  Once you are done, click on the Home tab and you will be back at Blog's home page, which is where you are now.

UPDATE:  Marsha just let me know that when she uses her smart phone to read Blog, she can't see the tabs to go to other sections of the site (like Destination Dallas).  We experimented a bit and she discovered that when she typed in the URL to go to Blog she can see the tabs.

Judged Needlework Shows in the United States

Denise Beusen has been collecting names of needlework shows in the United States that judging students can use for practice as they earn their certification.  She's put the list online for anyone to see at this link.  It's a PDF file so you'll need Adobe Acrobat on your computer to read the file.
http://www.beusen.net/Needlework/JudgedNeedleworkShowsUS.pdf

Denise didn't included juried shows in the list as she was looking for practice sites.  If you know of any non-juried needlework exhibit in your area, please post a comment below or email me at chilly hollowat hotmaildotcom and I'll pass the information along to Denise.

By the way, Donna has information on a Wichita Falls, Texas exhibit.

Going to Richmond?

Diane's been traveling a little, and made a stop at The Stitching Studio and Botique in Richmond, Virginia. Here is a bit about the shop, with lots and lots of photos of the goodies sold inside.

Boston Fund Raiser Canvas UPDATED

Mer discovered two "Boston Strong" ornaments at Wellesley Needlepoint, probably painted by their in house artists, each a different skyline view of the city.  These are fund raisers for victims of the Boston Marathon terrorist bombings.  Thanks for the heads up, Mer!
http://www.mersworld.com/2013/04/25/boston-strong/

UPDATE:  Joyce showed off a similar B Strong ornament on Facebook's Needlepoint Nation group this morning.  It also is a round ornament with the Red Sox logo over the word "strong."  She picked it up at Stitch Boutique of Boston.  I don't see it on their website but if you picture the Red Sox "B" logo on a navy background above "strong" in white letters you know what it looks like.

The Big Wedding UPDATED

Today, April 26th, a new movie called The Big Wedding opens around the country.
http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2719065881/

So why are needlepointers interested in a comedy of manners?  There is needlepoint everywhere!

The Needlepoint Retailer (a magazine for shops and designers) has photographs of many of the pieces used at props on the set in their magazine and they have reproduced those photos on their Facebook page.  I hope those without a FB account can see these.  I understand the designs are from Jean Smith and JP Needlepoint.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151679457631414&set=a.94132201413.107453.32969321413&type=3&theater

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151679468981414&set=a.94132201413.107453.32969321413&type=3&theater

Laura posted this message about the movie and the painted canvases featured in it to the ANG email list (and allowed me to repost here).

"Received this from Jane Hardy Hudson, owner of Two's Company Needlepoint in Rock Hill, SC--

This Friday, The Big Wedding starring Susan Sarandon and Robert DiNiro is coming out. Apparently, all through the movie, Susan Sarandon needlepoints, and the scenes in her home are filled with needlepoint.
Most of the designs are those by JP in California and Jean Smith. I talked to Jean about this - she is thrilled. I already have in stock the 3 pieces she says are shown most prominently in the movie for anyone interested. I can't wait to see the movie!"

If you want to visit the Two's Company website, here's the link.
http://twoscompanyneedlepoint.com/index.htm

Thanks for the tip, Ada and Laura!  By the way, Laura's website is a fun visit.  She teaches wonderful classes on mixed media on needlepoint canvas so there are plenty of examples of her work to enjoy here.
http://www.stitch4fun.com

UPDATE:  Now that folks have seen the movie, most are disappointed at the short amount of time the needlepoint is on screen.  The few folks who have commented on the movie in general say it isn't that great.  I will wait and order it on DVD when it comes out in the early fall so I can watch it at my leisure and replay the parts with stitching in them to enjoy the needlepoint.

Come to the Point Talks Shoulders

Come to the Point's latest newsletter talks about the best way to protect your shoulders when stitching.  Please pay careful attention.  It is all too easy to lose oneself in needlepoint and not remember our bodies need a break.

Dissolves in Water

Although dissolving in water isn't something that is normally a plus in needlework--Who needs threads that vanish when water is added?!  I'd never dare drink coffee near my stitching again!!--DMC has a new water soluble canvas for stitchers to use to put counted thread or embroidery onto a ground fabric that isn't easily countable.  Here is how it works.
http://dmc-threads.com/learn-dmcs-water-soluble-canvas/

Please note that this stuff is different than waste canvas which is dampened when you are finished stitching through it onto fabric so that you can easily pull the canvas threads out, leaving only the stitching behind.

Kreinik Updates Website

Kreinik has a new website!
http://kreinikthread.blogspot.com/2013/04/new-kreinik-website.html

Well, it's the same location but the way the site is set up has completely changed. If you have bookmarked their online color cards for their metallics and silk threads, those links will no longer work. (I have updated those at the bottom of Blog in the "Needlepoint Groups and Threads Resources" section. Keep scrolling way past where the articles on Blog end.)

I also added a link to their Find a Color page which is new and fun to play with.

One Turkey, Covered in Gems

Old World Designs has a stunning dimensional turkey canvas from Labors of Love that they are teaching.  Instead of the look of a stuffed animal, this piece looks like a jeweled sculpture, fit for the most formal Thanksgiving table.
http://oldworlddesigns.com/turkey.html

The canvas has three stitch guides (one for each major section of the turkey) and you can even purchase the bead kit if you want to mimic what the shop has done completely.  I have no idea about the costs but you can talk to Linda at the shop for all the details.

I Hate Pinterest But...

Are you familiar with Pinterest? It's a sort of online bulletin board where you can "pin" images from all over the Internet.   I was astounded just how many images taken from Blog (without my knowledge or permission) are posted on Pinterest.  I set up an account to do a search (you can't even look at Pinterest without an account, which I hate) and discovered 14 photos from Blog labeled Chilly Hollow.  There are probably more with other labels.

I do not like having photos that I have taken or photos that friends have given me to use on Blog posted to Pinterest without folks asking first.  I have asked people to remove photos and several have done as I have asked.  Pinterest is apparently good about removing photos if you ask the Pinterest account to remove your photos and that doesn't happen.

I loathe Pinterest.

However, not everyone feels the same way.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2013/04/needlenthread-on-pinterest.html

How about you?  Is this just another way to get inspired by needlepoint?  Am I the only person who doesn't like this happening behind my back?

A Visit to Ancient Egypt

Welcome to Ancient Egypt!  Ruth Schmuff has finished up her latest class, a statue of the goddess Bastet by Tapestry Fair, and posted photographs on her shop blog.
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2013/04/jewels-fit-for-goddess.html

There is another photo at Stitcherie which can be enlarged to see the details of the bead woven collar, the crystal on the chest piece, or the pretty border at the bottom.
http://stitcherie.ning.com/photo/bastet-s-jewels/next?context=latest

The techniques Ruth used can be used for other Egyptian themed pieces.  How about adapting some of them to this lovely pair of goddesses from Boots Bailey?
http://www.canvasesbegone.com/8102/Boots+Bailey+Standing+Goddesses+needlepoint+hp+18+ct.html

The needle weaving Ruth did would work on this dede Odgen bracelet, too.  These are just the first canvases I found with Google's help.
http://www.canvasesbegone.com/5799/dede+Eye+of+Hora+Egyptian+Bracelet+needlepoint+hp+18+ct.html

And of course there's another Tapestry Fair Egyptian cat canvas which I will start stitching in a month or so.  How am I going to stitch it as well as Ruth did in a totally different style?!  The background and bottom border are essentially the same!  (Stay tuned on that one.)

UPDATE:  Ruth's done!
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2013/05/national-bastet-day.html

Here is Ruth's next mystery piece--straight from the fertile brain of Sandra Vargas.  She's the Aquamarine Mermaid. Stay tuned on this one, too!

Where I Want to Spend Easter....

Carolyn Hedge Baird has taken a tour of Barbara's Needlepoint, a fabulous shop (and home of the painted canvas designer Ann Hanson) in South Dakota that doesn't have a website, just a Facebook page.  It looks like the perfect place to spend Easter.  (Or Christmas or any durn day of the week, in fact!)  Carolyn has featured a lot of Ann's rabbit canvases here and promised a later blog posting about Ann's yearly limited edition Santa canvases.
http://www.livingwithneedlepoint.com/2013/04/03/easter-at-barbaras-needlepoint/

In fact, I'll postpone posting this to Blog in the hopes that Carolyn does a write up on those Santas.  Stay tuned!

The Wizard's Magic Talisman

Painting of Chinese Pots with The Chinese Pot Tapestry in Background

Kay Fassett is having a pretty big year.   His autobiography, Dreaming in Colour, is out...
http://whipup.net/2012/10/03/book-kaffe-fassett-dreaming-in-color-an-autobiography/

... and the London's Fashion and Textile Museum has a large exhibit of his work (quilts, needlepoint, mosaic, and quilting) on display starting today, April 22.
http://ftmlondon.org/ftm-exhibitions/kaffe-fassett/

Ehrman Tapestry has commissioned a series of short films about his work.  You can see two of them on the Ehrman website and more should appear there over the next year.

Swarovski Flat Back Crystal Sequins

The Collection has added Swarovski flat back crystal sequins to their line of embellishments for needlepointers.   Pocket Full of Stitches has posted photographs of a few colors on their blog.
http://pocketfullofstitches.blogspot.com/2013/04/jp-needlepoint-swarovski-crystals.html

So far only the 5mm size is on The Collection's website but these are available in the 3mm size as well. Sometimes you can get the same color in both sizes and sometimes you can't.  Some of the colors are only available in one of the sizes right now.  That may change as this is a very new product.

I'm using these on the models I'm stitching for the Dallas and Columbus trade shows.  I can't show progress photos but I can tell you that although you can attach the 5mm size crystal sequins using a bead in the middle hole, the 3mm sequins are too small to be attached this way.  Even a tiny size 14 or 15 bead covers most of a 3mm sequin.  Instead I had to hold the 3mm sequins on with 2-3 tiny straight stitches that cover from the middle hole to an edge.  Try to find a matching colored thread.  A contrasting color may not show up unless it is a shiny metallic on this tiny crystal.

Here is how to attach sequins of any type, including the crystal sequins.  The small the sequin, the fewer threads you need to attach it as you don't want to hide the sparkle under too many holding threads.

In the diagram the turquoise lines are thread.  The turquoise diamond shape is a bead over the sequin hole.  Come up in the hole, add a bead to your needle, go down in the hole again.  This will secure the sequin in position.  You can choose a bead or thread that is the same color as the sequin or look for a contrasting color, depending on the effect you want.

They are gorgeous, by the way.  You add a lot of sparkle to your canvas using these flat back sew on crystals!

What Do You Think?

You may not be aware how many shops really don't like those who sell via eBay.  A brick-and-mortar shop has expenses that an Internet only business does not.  (On the other hand, many brick-and-mortar shops don't have the high costs of a website to set up and maintain, not to mention the daily upkeep, security and financial backend, posting of photographs of new stock, etc.)
http://www.shakespearespeddler.com

Theresa has had a long time Internet presence, as well as a physical shop.  She also has run an eBay store for several years.  Her life has changed and her shop in Mississippi is now open only by appointment and her main store will now be the eBay one.  This has provoked some complaints from a distributor and shops apparently.
http://shakespearespeddler.blogspot.com/2013/04/kerfluffle.html

The business model in the counted thread world from all that I can tell is a chart is designed and sold to a distributor who sells it to a shop who sells it to you.  Each time there is a slight markup to cover the costs and ensure a slight profit to each person in the chain of a sale.  Some chart designers sell directly to the public but not often.  Anyone who is more familiar with this process please correct my mistakes!

The business model in the painted canvas world is similar.  The designer creates a design.  Some designers sell directly to the public (although this is frowned on since it cuts out the shops).  Most either sell directly to a shop or have a representative that does this for them (or both).  Some painted canvas designers have distributors who cover the costs of painting multiple canvases plus take a cut of the profits.  Some designers paint their own canvases or have them done.  Either way, the shop buys the painted canvases at wholesale cost, then sells them to stitchers at retail price (wholesale price plus shop expenses plus a profit so the shop owner can eat) who are also likely to want to buy threads, beads, books and stitching tools which the shop also supplies.

If you were a designer, what sale route would you take?  If you were a shop, would you see Internet sales as a threat?  Personally, I find Internet-only shops very rare but I certainly am not aware of every needlework shop there is.

I hope this is thought-provoking and helps you appreciate shop owners more, whether they are the shop down the street or the Internet store front you buy from that has a shop in another state.

Laura Perin Cyberclass Starts in June

Fans of Laura Perin, counted canvaswork, or just folks who want to try working from a chart will be glad to hear Laura J. Perin is repeating her "Corsage" cyberclass in June.  This small geometric piece offers color choices and also your choice of central flower.  Laura says this isn't that hard a piece, either.

Check her website for details.

By the way, fans of Laura or folks who just are interested in how color impacts design will be fascinated with what Jan's done with one of Laura's little ornaments.

The Royal Pain Starts

Session One of Amy Bunger's latest Home Study class has shipped. I thought you would like to see the first kit and all the threads, which Linda just got in the mail.  This is for the JP Designs canvas called Royal Pain in the Tudors which celebrates all the wives of Henry VIII in a fabric and jewel collage.

Ain't Dead UPDATED

Everyone will be thrilled to learn that Enriched Stitch has NOT closed, contrary to the rumor mill's whispers.
http://astheneedleturns.com/rumor-has-it/

I hope this isn't a trend.  A shop member of Needlepoint Nation just mention this happened to them.  I wasn't able to find the message in the avalanche of them to know whether it was the same shop above.

When you hear a story about a shop, try and find out the facts before you pass the story around, ok?  We don't want to accidentally damage one of our beloved shops.

The Magnets (and Scissors Fobs) of Spring

Accoutrement Designs shows off their spring-thremed magnets and scissors fobs.  Note that some of these have sold out already, so you'll have to get lucky to snag some things.  There's a hint of a new magnet in the photo, by the way.  Is that a pink pig?

Tips on Choosing Colors

It can be very hard to pick just the right colors for your stitching. Us painted canvas folks have colors chosen for us but sometimes I still have trouble finding shades that work well together. I thought you'd like to see what Trish Burr says about colors from the perspective of someone who specializes in the realistic embroidery called needle painting.
http://trishburr.com/2013/04/16/choosing-colours/

This isn't going to work for you if you need contrasting colors so that one pops off the background of another,  but the bulk of what Trish stitches is realistic so she needs colors to meld with each other.

Look What Joyce Found

The folks in Gay Ann Rogers' online classroom came up with a winner today--at least Joyce did. Check out this ripping tool with light AND magnifier!
http://www.mightybright.com/Craft-Lights/Lighted-Seam-Ripper-with-Magnifier/

Another student of Gay Ann's says these come in various colors but I haven't found any online photos of other colors.  I thought to myself that it might be too heavy to use for a long period but this review says not.
http://sewcalgal.blogspot.com/2010/12/lighted-seam-ripper-magnifier-by-mighty.html

It seems to be on the more expensive side as seam rippers go but that's not saying much.  Seam rippers are cheap.  Not having to use them is priceless!

By coincidence, Janet Granger is working one of Alison's kits.  I had no idea you could order kits from Alison!  Thanks for mentioning this, Janet, and especially for posting a nice photo of the kit contents!

A Dragon's Coming to Tea at SBCANG

Dorothy Lesher's "Dragon's Tea Party"
Since I have a friend who is wild for Dorothy Lesher's designs and they are available only in her classes (unless you get lucky with someone selling their kit on eBay), I thought I'd mention that one of Dorothy's dragon pieces is going to be taught at the San Bernardino chapter of ANG in early May.  This one is called The Dragon's Tea Party.  The design is shown above.

SBCANG's website has details of the class and mentions that "ghosts" are allowed.  Ghosts are people who can't be in the three day class but who will be sent the class instructions and materials in the mail so they can still take the class from Dorothy.  Not every teacher allows ghosts since not all class materials are complete enough to do the class without the teacher being present, but Dorothy's lessons are very complete.  Anyone can recreate the dragon tea party, from the floral painted teapot to choosing the colors for your little girl's hair to dressing a dragon in a rainbow of pastel colors.  You will pay the kit fee plus once the chapter knows how many folks will be attending, each person will pay a bit towards Dorothy's travel expenses.  All you have to do is be a member of the chapter which welcomes long distance members.  You can read about the class here and also join the chapter if you are interested.  Just follow the links.
http://www.sbneedlepoint.org/#Workshops

For dragon fans, here are as many of Dorothy's other dragons as I could find online.  First, The Dragon Master (a wizard taming a dragon).  Scroll to the middle of the section to find him.

Moon Dragon is all sliver.

The Dragon's Castle features a green dragon with his castle, which looks a little apprehensive.  Wouldn't you?  That dragon looks HUNGRY!
http://www.ega-glr.org/docs/sem2013.pdf

Dorothy Lesher doesn't have a website but she does have a Facebook page and posts photos of her designs, not just the dragons, there.  If you have an account, you should be able to see the Fire and Ice double dragon portrait here.

Dr. Who Fan Alert

My Tardis Ornament, Door Held Shut By Star Pin
Wonder why there is a little telephone box decorating the left side of Blog?

The Tardis ornament above is an original design by me, stitched for a major fan of the BBC series Dr. Who in my family two years ago.

So what's it doing pictured on Blog again?  I am stitching the Weeping Angel canvas from Rogue Needlepoint right now and have the two Doctor canvases on order.  Stay tuned for an update on the angel statue. It's being stitched in basketweave but I have Big Plans for the background....

Introducing My Cow Magnet

I am a needle magnet addict.  I have a nice little collection of magnets I put on my canvases to hold my needles and occasionally my laying tool or scissors as well. A lot of folks are just like me, except I have one magnet that you probably don't, no matter how big a collector you are. I have a cow magnet.

I don't mean I have a magnet in the shape of a cow--I have a magnet that goes INSIDE a cow!
http://www.magnetsource.com/Solutions_Pages/cowmags.html?3e3ea140

This isn't the only style they come in, by the way.  Click on the purchase link once you go to the site above and you'll see other types.  The one I own resembles the Ru-Master 5.  That's what the local farm store stocks.

So why do I own a cow magnet?   I use it when I drop a needle on the floor.  I take out my cow magnet and roll it across the area where I think the needle fell and 99 times out of 100, I find my lost needle.

Now here is a little something for those who want regular needle magnets!

The Latest from Tony Minieri

Seeing Nimble Needle's posting about what happens in Tony Mineiri's Back to Basics classes reminded me that The One with the Mustache has several new designs that he has started to teach around the country.   I did a little searching and found the Needle Works in Austin, TX has posted photos of Tony's newest fabric collage piece Slava (obviously inspired by Russian textiles) and a brand new design called Lana's Lace that is a very intricate abstract apparently in one color.  I've seen photos on Facebook of this piece being worked.  The person taking this class said that the piece doesn't photograph well as it is very pastel.  She was working it in pastel blues and I thought it looked lovely.  But don't take my word for it--go to the photos at this link and see what he has created.

TNNA Surveys Us

TNNA periodically does surveys of stitchers, knitters, crocheters, etc. to help the shops who belong to the organization plan their futures. If you belong to the Facebook group Needlepoint Nation you've seen links to the survey.   The group has also published links to general information from past surveys.  You can see them here as PDF files, although the full surveys are only available to TNNA members.
http://www.tnna.org/?page=Research

Some interesting things appeared in the surveys. In 2010 needlepointers in general spent more on their projects than cross stitchers, knitters or crocheters. The amount is less than was spent in 2009, however.  The Great Recession has had an impact.  Two-thirds of needlepointers bought mostly from their specialty needlepoint shop, which makes sense as big box craft stores don't carry NP projects much.  I was surprised to see that only eighteen percent of needlepointers bought at shop websites, though.  The 2010 survey estimates there are 99,000 needlepointers in the U.S. and forty percent of this group did cross stitch during the year as well.

The 2007 survey estimates there were 320 needlepoint shops in the U.S. (versus 2230 yarn and crochet shops then).  The 2007 survey really shows the boom in knitting in the United States but you can tell it is cooling by the 2010 survey.

Want to know more?  Read the survey summaries at the above link.

The Magic of Needles

Thanks to Susan, I have a short video about how needles are made for you this morning.
http://science.discovery.com/tv-shows/how-its-made/videos/how-its-made-sewing-needles.htm

Not all needles are made this way.  Japanese Embroidery needles were hand made.

Sadly, the gentleman who made JE needles, famous for their round eyes, has died and his craft has died with him.  His needles live on, however, at least for now.

How to Make a Needlepoint Pillow

Ever wondered how a needlepoint pillow is actually made? There's a very detailed YouTube video that spells it all out here.  Not everything is spelled out--the narrator doesn't tell you to place the NP face down on top of the fabric, right sides together, before sewing, for example--but it will give you a general idea of how much work a pillow takes.

News for the Counted and Painted Folk UPDATED

There is lots of news today.  Let's start with news for those who love counted canvaswork.  DMC has published a brief but very interesting interview with Orna Willis.
http://dmc-threads.com/interview-orna-willis/

Betsy Morgan has updated her blog to list her current classes.  She's one talented lady!  If you are interested in reproduction samplers and smalls, don't miss looking over her work.  I saw the Toy Chest Etui on display at a needlework show about six years ago. It was amazingly small and detailed.
http://willinghandsstitching.blogspot.com/2013/04/revised-workshop-list.html

UPDATE:  Betsy's posted two brand new designs, both sure to amaze and delight her fans.
http://willinghandsstitching.blogspot.com/2013/04/edinburgh-designs.html

Sara Leigh has posted photographs of the newest Threedles design.  This one Kurdy Biggs calls "Pangea."  SL has done her thread magic and pulled the various color ways that go with each version of the chart so you can admire all the colors.
http://stitchything.blogspot.com/2013/04/whats-new-you-ask.html

By the way, SL says she forgot to add a link to a good place to get the bling you'll need for Pangea to her article.  Here it is.
http://www.fusionbeads.com/Crystal-Collection

Now to the painted canvas news!  Needle Works has started the second in their series of Nativity pieces from Brenda Stofft.  This new piece is one of the Wise Men, shown on a kneeling elephant.  Want to see the finished Holy Family?  Click on the blog title, then scroll down one entry.
http://www.stitchinginthetexashillcountry.com/the_needle_works/2013/04/share-a-stitch-sunday-april-7-from-santa-fe.html

Enriched Stitch shows off one of Ashley Dillon's designs, the napping Easter Rabbit.  The details are amazing and so is the stitching.

Speaking of stitching, Barbara Bergsten is stitching one of her new large shift pieces.  Check out those pink flowers!  I think the ladybug pockets will be the next area Barbara will stitch. This design is large and complex but there really are only four elements:  background, flowers, ladybugs and butterflies.  This makes it a great teaching piece for someone who is sticking their toe into fancier stitching.  One you master one element, it is easy to repeat the lesson elsewhere on the design before moving on.

The final painted canvas news is that the Chilly Hollow Stitch Guides blog has a lot of new guides to tell you about, including one for Brenda Stofft's Rabbit Geisha.  Click on the photo of the magic carpet on the right side of the page to visit, then return here by "riding" the magic carpet back to Blog.

Needlepoint Under the Stairs

Carolyn Hedge Baird loves posting photographs of needlepoint in our homes, to show how the things we make fit into real lives and real houses. This particular posting caught my eye since it includes a dog nook beautifully decorated with a dog ornament wreath.  I want one of these, once Watson gets a little smaller, that is!

Stumpwork Supply Sources

Prompted by a question by a friend, I started looking for information about where to get wire for stumpwork and stumbled across this very helpful site.  Not only does Elizabeth talk about sources for wire, she talks about the various styles of stumpwork that various prominent practitioners of this art do and how to choose a first project and a book on the topic.  She also covers silk ribbon embroidery briefly.  Thanks, Elizabeth.

Fabulous for Halloween

Sandy Arthur just posted a good photo of the canvas she's teaching for ANG's San Bernardino chapter in California. She has a stumpwork nose! She wears a feathery party hat and her orange kinky hair is fresh from the beauty parlor. Her teeth are the sort that would catch the eye of any dentist.  I think she is ready for a night on the town.

Witches aren't really my thing but any stitcher should take a careful look at the navy swirl background and the fabulous braided look of the green border.  I think the witch has a green brick stitch face!

This class is offered to long distance chapter members and SBCANG welcomes those who live far away.  If you'd like to take the class and have access to other wonderful classes the chapter sets up, you can email Pat Correz at the address Sandy includes in her article or check out the chapter website.

Celebrating Santa Fe

Joan Eidman loves Santa Fe.  She just designed a simple ornament to celebrate her love of the place and to memorialize the many happy hours she has spent there. (Did you know Joan was a professional harpist? I didn't!)

Joan's work is distributed by Dream House Ventures under the name Fiori.  You can see the Santa Fe designs she mentioned in the article on the Dream House Ventures web page for Fiori.

The saints she is writing stitch guides for are her large Saint Nicholas series.  You can see them here.  Magnificent!

Anyone taking her up on the offer of a free Santa Fe ornament?
