More Poison Bottles!

If you are a fan of the Kirk and Bradley poison bottle series, Rittenhouse also has what they call spooky bottles which are similar.  These are available on either 13 or 18 count and the stoppers are separate.  I've not seen any of these finished but I bet they look wonderful.

All About The Nine

I'm a big fan of Kimberly Design, so you probably have seen her nine small designs she calls The Nine before, but she has highlighted them on her blog with little funny stories or tidbits about the designs and the techniques they teach.

Most are available now with their stitch guides through Bedecked and Beadazzled and the last one should be available shortly.

For All the Dolly Parton Fans UPDATED

Are you a Dolly fan? Dolly Parton's from my neck of the woods, and we admire her musical talents, her business acumen and her charity work immensely.

But I had no idea that she had a needlepoint connection until I stumbled across this--her momma's a needlepointer.

And of course Dolly's immortalized in needlepoint.  Here's one of her fun sayings:

Over the Hill Needlepoint wants Dolly for President (there's a red, white and blue version, too).

Whenever you are trying to make a decision, just think, "What would Dolly do?"

Froopy Designs has sold this but I bet they'll make you another.

Ditto this charmer from Paige Mattie Designs.

Or simply stitch the big hair, cleavage and wild makeup.

UPDATE:  And here's Cup of Ambition from Froopy Designs.

Froopy has Dolly's saying about being called a dumb blonde.

The "Have a Holly Dolly Christmas" is a winner.

Dolly forever!!!!
(And if you aren't familiar with Dolly Parton, here's a nice introduction.)

Sing like Dolly!

Button Covers from Patty Paints

Have you been intrigued by the button cover canvases from Patty Paints?  The Collection Designs, the company that distributes Patty Paints, has updated their website with plenty of photos of the available designs, the metal buttons that come with the canvas, and an explanation of how to put them together.

It looks really easy!

Color Cards for Sale

One tool I'm never without is my DMC color card made with real threads.  I have a few other color cards (I use the Kreinik one occasionally) but if you have a thread brand you use a lot and need to have an idea of the available colors, a color card will be your best friend.  Needlepoint Gallery sells several types of these, which is very nice!

Free Alphabet for 13 Count Canvas

Abby of Le Point Studio has posted a free alphabet chart on her blog, sized perfectly for 13 count ornaments.

It will work on 18 count, of course, but will be around a third smaller.

While you are on Abby's website, browse a little.  She's one of the few designers with things on 12 count (the bulk of her designs are on 13 count) and has some unusual needle minders, too.

Acrylic Purses for Self Finishing

Kelly Hoch discovered these clear clutch bags on Amazon and painted, then stitched a monogram canvas to carry to a wedding.

Note that this clutch is a tad over 7 inches by a bit over 4 inches.  These come in various acrylic colors and are available with either silver or gold hardware.  You'll have to turn the raw edges of the canvas that's this size over, then whipstitch or glue fabric to hide the back before sticking inside the purse. There are a ton of styles available through Amazon (see the bottom of the page) plus these are probably widely available elsewhere.

This Etsy shop has a nice selection of colors and good pictures.

Here is an EyeCzndy design stitched and inserted in one of these purses.

Breaking News: Sue Jennings Has Headed to the Big Stitching Party Upstairs

Sue Jennings at the Woodlawn Exhibit

I learned a day or two ago that Sue Jennings, the owner of my former favorite shop, Needlewoman East, has died.  It's the end of an era.  I miss the shop, of course, but Sue was the light of the shop, always helpful and funny and kind.

Have fun in Heaven, Sue.  I'm sure St. Peter and the other saints are doubled over with laughter now that you are there.

The Guessing Game

JP Needlepoint is starting a new design and posted an unfinished picture on Facebook, asking us to guess how it would turn out.

I didn't see the sand castle coming!

I love the crab with his sand dollar.

Juli has started another Christmas beach scene.  This one features Santa.

Who has a tan and red toenails.  LOL

Santa's finished and ready for another cocktail!  I love the crab who now has a beach ball.

Fiber Pharm: The Threadaholic's Dream

Need threads but you don't have a shop?  Fiber Pharm to the rescue!

You can buy a collection of fibers, or just a skein, or you can purchase what they call a "Curated Collection," which is a selection of fibers for a variety of canvases.  The canvases are purchased separately.  Designs featured come from Alice and Blue, Rachel Barri, Bad Bitch, CSH Needlepoint Designs, Crude Canvases, A Dragon's Tale, Emily G Stitches, Evelyn Designs, Everyday Needlepoint, Fire and Iris Designs, Frances Mary Needlepoint, Jenny Henry, Hudson Stitchery, Jenya Rose, Kayla Lu Designs, Lazy Lane, Mopsy Designs, One Part Whimsy, Over the Hill Needlepoint, Oz Needle and Thread, Poppy's Designs, Judy Tasch, Rowdy Designs, Ruscella Designs, SBT Stitches, Silver Stitch, Skooter's Designs, Elizabeth Crane Schwartz, Texas Safari, Three Thimbles, What a Gem, WIP Stitch, Audrey Wu and Ziggy Stitches.

Never heard of the designer?  No worries.  Click on the thumbnail for a canvas you like and you'll see a link to the designer's website at the bottom of the listing for the threads for it, which is usually an Etsy page. Makes it easy to get threads that will work and then go pick up the canvas (although I suggest that you make sure the canvas is in stock before you buy the threads for it).

Many thanks to Deborah of A Dragon's Tale for telling NP Nation about this new website!

Diagonal Chop Sticks

NeedlePaint.com has introduced three new stocking cuffs to their line of printed designs and as is their practice, they have listed stitch suggestions on their blog.  One stitch they have diagrammed for us is the Diagonal Chop Sticks, which I'd never seen before.  It looks like a capital K to me.  This comes from one of Susan Robert's books which are available in Kindle format only through Amazon. (Second link below)

However, Susan's website has plenty of free stitch diagrams (just not Diagonal Chop Sticks) and you can browse all the e-books she has available there, too.

Many thanks to NeedlePaint.com for this new stitch!

Needlepoint Canvases from Etsy

Friday I spent a little time browsing Etsy for needlepoint canvases and I came up with some fun finds.  Pour yourself a cup of your favorite beverage and look at these!

Paige Mattie Designs has a lovely mermaid called "Mermaid By the Sea."  I also like her seahorse and lobster.

AltStitchery features a hula dancer with brown hair and a teal bikini top.  (If you think blondes have more fun, they have a blonde version, too.)

Continuing the beach theme, Tracey Dau Designs has a darling boy on the beach ready to jump in the water with her "Seashell in Your Pocket" piece.

My Pink Sugar Life's got a lot of fun Halloween small ornaments.  My personal favorite is their Day of the Dead Bat, but they have a lovely Nordic pumpkin if you want something more classic.

If you like roll ups, A Dragon's Tale has a wonderful jazzy skeleton. Her little dog ornaments are classics, though, so don't miss those if you are a dog lover.

Want a classic pillow design on 13 count?  Sally Corey's "Leaf Quadrant" is perfect for you.  There is a companion piece, too, if you want two coordinating pillows for your den or bedroom.

However, I think her "Cosmic Mandala" wall hanging is amazing!  It also works as a small rug and is on 10 count.

Like birds?  Linda Rhea Designs has some charming bird ornaments. Her "Fairy Wren" is my personal favorite.

Don't want the bother of stitching something?  I have a fabulous and funny pillow for you from Pout Design.

Hope you had fun browsing!

EyeCandy's Free Needle Minder Tree

Ada Hayden of EyeCandy has posted a fabulous free design of a Christmas (or Halloween or Easter or any holiday you wish) tree on her blog.

She's finished it as a framed display for her decorative needle minders, which is a genius idea!  The blog posting has a link to the free download but I suggest you visit both her blog and website to get a full idea of what you'll be doing if you want to create your own "jewelry" tree.

The free counted design would make a lovely heart for the Hospice Hearts program, too.

If you need to use a scroll frame for a project and you hate sewing the canvas to the tapes at the top and bottom, you might want to look into the tapestry clip frames that Jolly Red sells in the UK.

My Turtle Bag Insert UPDATED

I finally broke down and ordered a tote from Turtle Bags Inc.

This Florida company sells both cross body and tote bags. They come with fabric-covered stiff inserts for the window(s) on one (cross body) or two (tote bag style) sides of the purses.  You can buy extra inserts from the company to change the look of your purse.

My tote isn't as heavy as it looks but the sides are stiff so it stands up on its own.  Here is a peek at the inside.  The cross body doesn't have the zippered center and only has a display window on one side.  The other side has a zippered pocket.  I like being able to carry a lot of stuff and so far I've not had pilling issues on the handle and the fabric doesn't seem to attract pet hair.  By the way, I'm five feet, four inches tall, so this is a fairly big tote but the handles are the right size for carrying or over the shoulder wear.

In the photo to the right I unzipped the zipper at the top of the display window and pulled the fabric insert that came with my denim bag out partway so you can see it.  You might be able to see the zipper for the other side's display window at the bottom of the picture.  Again, this is the tote bag.  The cross body is slightly different.  Check the company's website for further information and the current colors available.

Of course needle artisans can stitch things for the inserts!  I stitched a Tapestry Fair birdhouse design by Pat Scheurich for mine.  If you are going to stitch your own, the tote bag style display window is roughly 5 3/4 inches wide by 6 3/4 inches tall.  I'm told the cross body bag window is slightly narrower but I don't have those dimensions as I only ordered the larger size.  The outer dimension of the canvas you put in the window should be roughly 7 1/4 inches wide by 9 5/8 inches tall.  I recommend you stitch 2-3 more rows than the window dimension in case the stitched canvas moves a bit or you want to take it out of the  cross body bag and use it in the tote bag.  All I did was fold the raw edges under to fit and stuck the canvas in the window.

I did cover it with a layer of black tulle first. I had not planned to use this canvas as a purse so it has beads and ribbon embroidery, not the best idea for a purse that will see wear!  The tulle (an idea from Ruth Schmuff of Bedecked and Beadazzled) will help prevent snags but I will replace the canvas with a more sturdy one later once I get it stitched.

A member of NP Nation recommended putting the fabric insert that comes with the bag in the display window behind the stitched canvas.  This works well to keep the needlepoint from bending away from the sides of the display window or shifting.

If you aren't good at measuring, Mindy's Needlepoint designs canvases to fit the bags and Mindy also sells the tote bags.  There are six designs available currently.

Stitch by Stitch in Larchmont, NY also sells the bags and has plenty of inserts that fit from a variety of designers.  Your favorite shop can help you pick a canvas as well, even if they don't stock the bags.

This is a fun way to use needlepoint when you are running out of wall or couch space for your stitching.

UPDATE:  I've done two articles about inserting a design in a Turtle Bag.
