Mindy's Self Finishing Items to Browse

If you are thinking about trying self-finishing items, you'll want to look at the Pocket Full of Stitches trunk show of Mindy items on their blog today.
http://pocketfullofstitches.blogspot.com/2020/09/mindy-trunk-show-wallets-boxes.html

They are featuring various styles of wallets, boxes and purses plus luggage tabs and credit card cases.  While the shop has the trunk show, they can help you with canvases that will fit these.  A friend had seen the wallets in person and says they are fabulous.  Mindy also has dragonfly lacquered boxes with a space in the lid for a canvas.  You can see those on her website.  You can also buy directly from Mindy's shop which she runs as well as her design business.
http://www.mindysneedlepoint.com/shop/Mindys-Needlepoint-Designs.htm

More styles are pictured on Mindy's Facebook account.  Have fun looking!

How to Block a Stitched Canvas: The Movie

Barbara Williams has posted a video on YouTube to demonstrate blocking a canvas.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j06uMxauk9k&fbclid=IwAR1qOSCHkSrqh-EtAhny9ijanTNZUMPj_Z50fqgi7mqtYHECGJE69Hj7eYA

Note that this video is from the UK.  Here in the USA we often have different names for things and if putting glue on the back, we'd use rice paste glue or rabbit glue, not wallpaper paste, if we were using such.  (I never have and have only had one piece that it was impossible to make square.)

By the way, Sarah Beecham Design has a fun Facebook page to explore.

Stitch Rock News

Stitch Rock has a new website!  Plus they have needle minders available for some of their most popular canvases from their Etsy store (such as that darling llama!) as well as canvases.  One of the nicest features of the website is thread parings, which is brands and colors the designer thinks go especially well with certain canvases.  That's a nice touch and one I bet shop owners will love as it makes it easy for them to pull threads for customers for Stitch Rock designs.

The title of this is a bit misleading—it's not the designer EyeCandy that is taking an unconventional route—it's her customers!  They are doing some fun stitching and finishing that's decidedly not traditional.

Needlepoint Finishing Tab

In case you haven't noticed, I've added a new tab above for needlepoint finishing.  The link below will take you right there.  I've listed all the shops and independent finishers I have heard about. Note I have not listed their deadlines for Christmas 2020.  Follow the link and browse to see their deadlines, examples of their work, whether they will deal directly with you or only work through a shop, etc.
https://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/p/needlepoint-finishers.html

Whenever you arrange finishing, find out up front the cost, the approximate date your finishing will return, send photos/fabrics/trims/etc. of what you want being as specific as possible, and always ALWAYS ship things with tracking numbers and insurance.  Make sure it returns to you with a tracking number as well.  You might have to pay extra for this both ways but trust me, you don't want your finishing lost in the mail with no way to hunt it down.  It's also smart to put extra mailing labels in with the finishing so that the finisher can just stick your label on the box.  This eliminates the shipper getting your address slightly wrong.

Reproducing Little Bottles for the Cabinet of Curiosities UPDATED

Tricia Nguyen has posted a video about the long road to figuring out how to make reproduction scent bottles for her Cabinet of Curiosities classes.  I cried at the end.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuMlUTmGeaU&feature=youtu.be

A little background—Tricia's a materials engineer with a specialty in fabrics.  She became fascinated with 17th Century stumpwork caskets and has been on a long journey to figure out how they were made and to have reproductions of the caskets, their hinges, paper, threads, inkwells and now bottles made for the historical classes she is teaching on stumpwork.

By the way, the little bottles and the ink pots for the stumpwork caskets are sold out.  There is still a little room in the last class she's teaching on her historical exploration of these items.
https://thistle-threads.myshopify.com

UPDATE:  The paper lining for these things was equally difficult to research and source.

Whimsy and Grace Needs Your Help UPDATED AGAIN

If you want to buy something from Needlepoint.com, today's the day to get it.  Why?  Because for this weekend only, forty percent of every sale is going to be donated to Toni Randall of Whimsy and Grace.  The shop will also match all the funds raised.  Toni lost her home in the Almeda Fire that devastated Talent, Oregon.  Apparently she got out just in time.  Twenty minutes after she left her house and studio were gone.

Missed the sale because you just found this?  Toni's daughter has set up a Go Fund Me page.

Thread Palette Generator

I've mentioned Stitch Palettes before.  This is Krisztina's website where she comes up with color palettes based on photographs and emails them to you each Monday if you sign up for her email list.  Krisztina also sells a DMC print it yourself inventory sheet that helps you track what colors you own and what you need to buy.  You can also buy collections of color combos based on photographs from her.

Krisztina has a new online tool that is both fabulous and free that you need to know about.  She calls it her Embroidery Thread Palette Generator.  You go to her website and choose the Palette Generator, then type in a DMC color you want to find similar threads to.  I used DMC cotton floss 333 as an example.  I typed 333 in the box, then pushed the button.
https://stitchpalettes.com/the-embroidery-thread-palette-generator/

I got four results:  the HTML hex code (useful for when I need to change the background color of Blog), my original 333 which is described as very dark blue violet, and DMC tapestry wool 7318 and Anchor cotton floss 00110.  The tapestry wool and Anchor were in coordinating colors to my original DMC 333.  I also got a list of DMC thread colors similar to 333 (useful if you are frantically hunting in your stash for something similar) plus TEN coordinating color schemes.

If you are constantly looking for color combinations in your stitching, you need to bookmark this ASAP.  It's going to make choosing colors so much easier!  Kudos to Krisztina for coming up with this tool, which is unique and useful to boot.

CanvasWorks: The Movie

The Needlepointer in Washington State's September 2020 trunk show is from CanvasWorks.  I don't usually highlight trunk shows but CanvasWork's lovely designs are not often seen online and they deserve to be.
https://vimeo.com/454800597

If you like traditional designs that are stitch painted in beautiful glowing colors, you'll love these designs.  If you fall in love, you can browse the trunk show online at the shop.

Sometimes we need comfort stitching, don't we?  Most of these designs scream for tent stitches and a good movie to watch.  Have fun!

Horse Country Chic Talks Handbags

If you want a real statement needlepoint piece, stitch a handbag.  Horse Country Chic has a lovely posting up with great photos of various handbag styles.
https://horsecountrychic.blogspot.com/2020/08/creating-needlepoint-handbag.html

I'm partial to Melissa Shirley's purse designs which are usually based on the natural world and to…

...the big carpet bag styles from Julie Pischke Designs.

Breaking News: Terry Collingham Has Died

There was a notice on Facebook today that Terry Collingham of Colonial Needle has lost her battle with breast cancer.  If you are a regular stitcher, you won't know Terry but she was the president of Colonial Needle which is the owner of Kelly Clark, Lee's Needle Arts, Silver Needle, De Elda and SOS Designs, and the distributor of Prescencia cotton perle and floss, a huge range of needles and much more.

We are really sorry to hear this and send our sympathy to her family.

Shop Realities During a Pandemic

By the way, designers are having a time, too.
