The Needle Art Nut Does Halloween

If you belong to Facebook's Needlepoint Nation group, you've seen lots of photos of various members' Halloween needlepoint displays.  If you aren't a member, you can visit Pat's blog and see all her holiday stitching.  It's fun!

A Free Halloween Design from Eye Candy UPDATED

Ada of Eye Candy has released a free Halloween chart.  It's designed to fit in the acrylic purses (but I'd measure yours before you start stitching, just to make sure it is the right size).

It's part Bargello and part buttons--and 100% fun!  Happy Halloween!

UPDATE:   Ada updated the design for autumn by changing her buttons.  Clever!

Self-Finishing: The Movie

The Needlepoint Clubhouse in the St. Louis area has posted a short video tutorial on self-finishing on the shop's Instagram account.

The box is by Rachel Barri, the canvas is also probably a Rachel Barri design.

Looks like she used a knitting blocking set.  There are several types of interlocking foam blocking boards so shop around for the best price and a set large enough for your typical needlepoint sizes.  I'd recommend using stainless steel t-pins instead of the comb tooth variety in the video, by the way.  Those are ok for a small piece but you'll need t-pins for larger projects, especially if they need a lot of blocking.

I think the yellow tool she uses is a plastic leather burnisher.  I've seen them in the big box craft stores.  I think a butter knife is a good substitute.

It's actually easy to do self-finishing.

Kevin's on the Wall

Kevin Lusk just posted the link to this cooking video on Needlepoint Nation.  It's a cooking v-blog that covers pickling recipes in this segment.  BUT from time stamp 3:57  to 4:30, the video talks about Kevin's original needlepoint.  His framed artwork is on the wall behind Beryl throughout much of the video, too.  You can follow Kevin on his Instagram account, or...

...check him out on Facebook.

Fiber Talk Interviews Wormspit

Fiber Talk has a fun interview with Michael Cook of Wormspit.  Michael raises his own silkworms, spins their coccoons into silk fiber, dyes it and stitches with it.  It's an amazing look at how silks are made.

Fiber Talk has a lot of videos about silkworms down lower on the page which you might want to look at.

You can explore Michael's website here, look at his needlework, admire antique silk reels and follow his blog.  Don't miss the section on Saganishiki, which is silk and paper woven brocade.

Breaking News: Stitch-Stash Buys House of Needlepoint

Stitch-Stash in Delaware has purchased The House of Needlepoint in Connecticut!  The House of Needlepoint's owners are ready to retire and Patti of Stitch-Stash is ready to expand.

The current plan is to have one website for both shops but to leave the shops (and their employees) as they are.  The House of Needlepoint will be renamed Stitch-Stash Darien.  We hope everyone enjoys their new roles and that everyone in the Rehoboth Beach or Darian area will visit the shop closest to them.

The Autumn Needlepoint Reunion October 15-16, 2022

Heard about the trade show happening in Frisco, Texas tomorrow and the next day?  No?  Want to hear a bit about it?  The Pointing It Out podcast interviews two of the four people organzing it in this video.

I should point out this is a wholesale show only, which means the designers and the shop get together in a hotel to buy-sell.  You can't go and buy for your personal stash.  Sorry!  But your favorite shop will be there, buying things.  Some they may be able to bring home with them; other things will have to be ordered and delivered once they are painted.  It's a very exciting time for the industry and I hope everyone has a lovely time and a safe trip.

How to Paint a Canvas: The Movie

Aster+Daisy posted a speeded up video on Facebook showing the designer creating a Halloween canvas.   The outlines are traced, then each section is painted, with details and shading added.  It looks like the artist works from top down, which is interesting.  I know several stitchers who stitch a painted canvas top down to keep their hands off previously worked areas.

I love we see the stitched version at the very end.  Nice work~!

Cottage Garden Threads

Melita is having great fun at the ANG Seminar in Tucson.  She picked up some overdyed threads from an Australian company called Cottage Garden Threads.

Here is the company's website.  Looks like they sell cotton floss plus size 8 and 12 perle cotton.

You can find single skeins on Etsy but be careful to buy enough of the same dyelot if you need to cover a large area.  This thread is often available in quilting shops apparently, so if there is a quilting emporium in your area, inquire if they carry Cottage Garden Threads.

I also found a nice selection available through Terry Bay Needlework Designs.  I am not sure where the shop is located (the website doesn't say) but it's somewhere in the USA, I think.

Tudor Embroidery

A Facebook page has posted photos of Tudor embroidery which they say is all the work of Mary, Queen of Scots.

I'm pretty sure historians think these were not done by Her Royal Highness but it's still very interesting to see these slips.  They are certainly in the style she stitched.
