Thought for the Day

I should have titled this "Thought for the Day: In Which I Insult Cross Stitch Designers," but that's getting a bit long, don't you think?   The article looks at handmade dolls and how the hands became cruder over time, postulating that the craftsmen making the dolls had a totally different and less artistic attitude towards their handiwork.  When I look at the designs available to needlepointers today, the level of artistic ability applied to those designs is breathtaking. I don't always LIKE the designs but most needlepoint designers are very very skilled.  The insult comes in when I look at cross stitch designs (and I admit that I am no expert on the work of XS designers since I don't stitch in this way) which seem to mostly have primitive themes and styles except for the hyper detail of designers like Heaven and Earth Designs or Told in a Garden.  It makes me wonder if the design quality has gone down because of the rampant copying and sharing of charts?  Or maybe I just don't "get" cross stitch--which is entirely possible!
http://ladysrepositorymuseum.blogspot.com/2014/11/evolution-of-hands-in-early-wooden-dolls.html

But I wonder what factors influence the level of skill and design ability goes into creating the designs we love?  Did the doll hands change because of the impact of industrialization or is something else at work or is it a variety of things?

Feel free to call me an idiot in the comments below, or you can email me at chillyhollowathotmaildotcom and straighten me out that way.

Little Packages for Your Christmas Tree

Sheena's latest blog posting has a wonderful stitch for creating little Christmas wrapped packages.  There is much more, of course, but I highly recommend you avert your eyes when she talks about cheesecake.

Decorating the Christmas Tree

Ridgewood has just posted a photograph and closeups of Bertha's Christmas tree.  I am sorry I don't know who the designer is, but Bertha is doing a magnificent job decorating her tree!

Finishing Friday: Thanksgiving Stitching

I've been slacking off on posting Finishing Friday articles as several shops are doing this now and I hate to rain on their parades, but today's finishing is all turkeys in honor of Thanksgiving, courtesy of Ridgewood, so I thought you'd really enjoy this.  I know I did!

Brenda's Stitching Post (with Floor Frame)

Brenda has a snug stitching nest in her home and kindly posted a photograph of it for us to see.
http://brendasneedlepointstudio.blogspot.com/2014/11/my-stitching-post-aka-happy-chair-111014.html

I have the same K's metal floor stand that she does and although you can't see it's flat metal plate base, you can tell that it will fit right under her love seat/recliner.  Knowing just how a floor stand will work with your favorite stitching chair is the biggest clue whether you will love it or regret spending the money.  Hopefully this photo will help you make up your mind whether to ask Santa for the floor stand you've been eying or not.

Here is a diagram of the K's metal stand so you can see the whole thing.  Brenda has a different clamp and doesn't have the wooden tray to hold various items that you see in this photo.
http://www.kscreations.com/floor_metal.htm

Hope this gives you an idea of whether the K's metal stand will work for those of you in the market for a floor stand.

Best Selling Needlepoint Books (and More!)

I don't know what it is about booksellers but their newsletters and blogs are always The Best!  Ruth Kern's November posting on her blog is no different. You are going to be very busy reading Ruth's list of needlepoint best sellers in 2014, learning a bit about Assisi embroidery, and just generally finding out about great books I'd like to read someday.  So pour yourself your favorite beverage, put your feet up and have fun hanging out with Ruth and all those lovely books.

Jane Goes Skiing

Once I saw Sheena's snow stitch (link below), I decided to do a round up of canvases with snow and skiing. After all, I love cross country skiing! I don't do downhill as I have no talent for it (except for falling sideways onto the snow while wearing those skis--which apparently is quite difficult). But before we go there and my brother shows you the videos, let's look at Sheena's stitch diagram.
http://www.sheenasstitches.com/ski-slope/

Now for the ski canvases.  Karen Cruden of Ewe and Eye has some classic snowmen designs.  Candy Rush is the gold standard of her series.
http://www.stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=14283&title=Candy%20Rush&itemtype=Hand%20Painted%20Canvases

Sweet Stuff is smaller, more intimate as is Peppermint Twist (second link below).
http://www.annieandco.com/products/ewe-eye-ewe-356

http://www.stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=19016&title=Peppermint%20Twist&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Sweet Ride is similar.  Fun!
http://www.stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=19015&title=Sweet%20Ride&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Shelly Comiskey has three Sledz canvases that are small and feature snowmen on traditional sleds.
http://www.bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/Products/?category=216

If you like cute, how about Marcy Covington's Ski Bear?
http://www.stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=20735&title=Skier&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Or Sev Ickes' Ski Couple?
http://www.stitchtherapyneedlepoint.com/feature.php?id=21004&title=Skiing&itemtype=hand%20painted%20canvases

Ok, those are my favorites.  What are yours?

A Monogram for Christmas

Ridgewood has a really clever idea for a stitching gift on their blog today--combine a monogram canvas and a box lid and call it done!  Of course with Christmas almost here, this may not be feasible for a December 25 present but there are birthdays and anniversaries and other things in our futures where this will be a wonderful idea.
http://ridgewoodneedlepoint.blogspot.com/2014/11/if-you-need-gift-that-can-be-finished.html

If boxes aren't your gift recipient's style, how about luggage tags?  I think these are from Lee/Colonial Needle, but I am not certain.

Nimble Needle has some gorgeous Creative Needle jewelry cases, too.

Counted Fun with Carol via Correspondence

The newest ANG correspondence course is now open for registration--Carol Algie Higgenbottom's "Rose Swirls."  The piece teaches a variety of stitches including pulled work stitches, so it is perfect for the intermediate stitcher who wants to stretch their skills.   The class is open to any ANG member.  The details are in the two links below.

Brenda was one of the pilot stitchers for this course and posted great photos of her version.  She added a lovely trellis background so she could frame this in a square frame.

StarMag's Clip-on/Freestanding Magnifying LED Light UPDATED

Melita just posted on Facebook that she loves the StarMag LED light/magnifier from Daylight that clips onto her Evertites.  (The clip opens up to about an inch and a half wide.)  It can also be used as a tabletop light as there are little legs that pull out to stabilize the light/magnifier when it isn't clipped to your frame.   Melita got this from Nimble Needle in New Jersey.  Here it is from their website.

New Jersey Needle Fest with Finishing

New Jersey Needle Fest was the first weekend in November and it looks like great fun.  Karen at Nimble Needle went and had a blast!  But as she says, "Not interested in looking at a room of middle aged women? Here's some items that have recently come back from various finisher."  LOL
http://thenimbleneedle.blogspot.com/2014/11/new-jersey-needlefest-and-few-finished.html

The finished items that just showed up in her shop are wonderful, as is this amazing tefillin bag in a stained glass pattern with the Star of David and the recipient's name in Hebrew.

Finishing Friday: The Fuzzies

Linda B. just got two wonderful ornaments back from her finisher. They are spectacular! Beautifully stitched, Linda.
http://splittheneedles.blogspot.com/2014/10/just-in-time_30.html

I'm pretty sure the polar bear ornament is from Melissa Shirley but I am not sure about the snowman. He might be from Ruth Schmuff....

The finishing is out of this world.  The little fuzzy bumps, the colorful braid, the "just enough and not too much" ribbons--I love them!

For those who are into a different style, check out the two finished pieces customers of Eye Candy sent to Ada Hayden to enjoy!  The finishing from West Coast Finishing and Mountain Shadow Studio show you why they both have a reputation for excellence!

Back to the 1930s

Janet Granger's latest dollhouse miniature kit features what she calls the Crinoline Lady.  Dollhouses are made in miniature and they often mimic certain eras or interior decorator styles, so it makes sense for Janet to create tiny pieces that will fit into this or that era.
http://janetgranger.wordpress.com/2014/11/06/new-1930s-style-dollhouse-needlepoint-table-runner-and-placemat-sets-to-make/

In the South we called this the sunbonnet girl. Apparently the official name she goes by is Sunbonnet Sue and this design motif originated as a quilting pattern in the 1880s.  I've seen a lot of cross stitch kits and quilting patterns featuring Sunbonnet Sue-type patterns and there are some charming rework designs that are more elaborate.
http://hartcottagequilts.com/his8.htm

I did find one painted needlepoint canvas featuring a sun bonnet from Jane Nichols but otherwise I think the world of needlepoint design has walked right past the 1930s.

Thought for the Day UPDATED AGAIN

The thought from the day comes from a video The Glass Pingle posted that talks about something that is vanishing from the world today--"...a very intense engagement with the properties of materials..."
http://theglasspingle.blogspot.com/2014/11/thread-management.html

I love the thought that there is such a varied group that is manipulating threads for sport, art and surgery!

UPDATE:  The link to the video on The Glass Pingle doesn't work.  Apparently the site has taken down this article.  Sorry!  Many thanks to Pat for pointing this out.

UPDATE #2:  The problem with the film has been fixed and it is here.

Snow and More Snow UPDATED

No, there's not snow on the ground here in Chilly Hollow (although I expect to see plenty of that in January and February).   Peggy at NeedlePaint.com is stitching stockings the company designed for her twin nephews and needed snow stitches for each.  She cleverly came up with two different kinds of snow using two different stitches.  I thought you'd like to see her solutions to the snow problem.

I Have Been Busy

One of the two big things I've been meaning to do this fall has been finished--I have added a tab to Blog that lists all sorts of online resources to teach yourself to needlepoint or to move from tent stitches to fancier stitches and threads. It's just a beginning, a stab at trying to help new stitchers or stitchers wanting to stretch their skills, but it's better than nothing.

One thing I'd like to add to the "Teach Yourself Needlepoint & Embellishment" tab is a listing of shops that have beginner kits available for those who want to dabble in needlepoint without spending a fortune.  Many of us aren't close to a shop so getting supplies via mail order means we need to be able to get blank canvas and threads, or a small painted design and threads, plus a packet of needles in one place.  If you as a shop owner do this, or if you as a customer know your shop provides this service, please let me know so I can update the article with a list of shops.

You can either email me at chillyhollowathotmaildotcom or you can leave a Comment below.  Thanks!

Wooden Halloween Ornaments from Melissa Shirley

While I was looking for something totally different, I stumbled across wooden Halloween ornaments from Melissa Shirley. I remember she sold a few designs this way at least five years ago so if you love wooden ornaments for your decorating, this is a great way to combine needlepoint design with wood to enhance your castle for Halloween.

Looking Over Sandy's Shoulder

If you are a fan of Sandy Arthur's stitching like I am, you are dying to see how her latest cyberclass "Mod Ornaments" is going.  Sandy just shipped the first lesson, so I imagine a lot of folks are standing by their mailboxes, impatiently tapping their foot.  Here's a peek.  This is a mystery class so no one but the author (Sandy) knows how the story will go.

The canvas is by Eye Candy.  Once the cyberclass is over, your local shop will be able to order the canvas and guide for you in case you are kicking yourself that you missed out.  Stay tuned for more updates!

For My Counting Friends

This posting is for my counted canvaswork friends who will love seeing four different color ways of Threedles' 2012 ornament design.  Jan is stitching these as presents (plus a small one for herself) and using a variety of color schemes, all of which are beautiful.

A Bowl for Candy

Thanks to Donna's recommendation I've been reading the Embroiderers Association of Canada's blog where I stumbled across this counted canvaswork candy dish!

Now that's not something you see every day!  A little searching found this information on the designer Carol Storie's project.

Here is her website.  The candy dish project isn't listed there as it is still probably only a teaching piece.

Counted Canvaswork Delights

Fans of counted canvaswork, particularly pieces by Jim Wurth and Kurdy Biggs/Threedles, will want to check out the SBCANG website to see some of their work stitched by chapter members. I love seeing the various colors and the ways the Threedles chart was turned into ornaments instead of one big piece.
http://www.sbneedlepoint.org/nov_2014.html

Fans of either designer who want to see more of their work and possibly buy charts should visit Blog's tabs labeled "Counted Canvaswork Designers" and "Counted Canvaswork Shops" to find more examples of their work and shops that Blog readers say stock a large number of charts.  To return here, just click on the Home tab.  See how easy I make it to spend way too much money on charts?  LOL

Enjoy the show.  Many thanks to SBCANG for being such a talented and giving group!

(By the way, if your shop has a ton of needlepoint charts and they aren't on the shop list, please let me know by either adding a comment below or sending me a quick note at chillyhollowathotmaildotcom.  Thanks!)

Ehrman has updated her profile (first link below) and done a video interview (second link below) as part of their artist profile series.  It's great fun to meet Magie and hear her approach to needlepoint design, so get yourself a cuppa and settle down to visit with one of Ehrman's artists.

Top Ten To Master UPDATED with Sixteen More

Mary Corbet just wrote an article about her top ten embroidery stitches beginners should master--the ones she uses again and again and thinks every embroiderer should know because they are so useful and fundamental to embroidery.   Frankly, I use a lot of embroidery stitches in my needlepoint since I taught myself crewel embroidery before I taught myself needlepoint. In today's embellishment world, they add a lot of zing to my needlepoint without much trouble.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2014/10/ten-embroidery-stitches-to-know.html

UPDATE:  This article was written two weeks ago but the morning it published, Mary added a list of sixteen dimensional stitches to her website.  So now you have even more reference material to play with the next time you need a bit of texture or oomph for your needlepoint.  Thanks again, Mary!
http://www.needlenthread.com/2014/11/16-stitches-to-add-texture-dimension-to-hand-embroidery.html

Whether you agree with Mary's list or not, you will want to bookmark this page.  Mary being Mary, each and every stitch has a link to a How To Video demonstrating the stitch.  Just click on the green underlined title and away you will go to a video of Mary showing you just how to do this stitch.  Just note that like needlepoint stitches, embroidery stitches have many names.  For example, what Mary calls detached chain stitch I call a lazy daisy stitch!

You call it tomaTOE, I call it toMAto, it's all useful.

Thanks, Mary!

Patricia in Pink UPDATED

Suzanne got to take a class with Patricia Sone at Needlepoint This! in Dallas, Texas. They worked on Melissa Shirley's pink Santa. Isn't it wonderful?!

UPDATE:  More on the amazing pink Santa from Suzanne, with lots of information and closeups.

The pink Santa isn't the only class Needlepoint This! has going.  Perhaps one of these will whisper to you now that Patricia's Pink Santa class is over....

Orna Explores Etsy

Orna Willis is having insomnia so she's been up early playing on her computer.  One of the things she did  to amuse herself while everyone else slept was to enter "needlepoint" in the Etsy search engine to see what turned up.  Some of this is pretty surprising!  Some is just plain odd and some is wonderful.  Have fun with Orna exploring.

http://ornadesign.blogspot.com/2014/10/more-of-search-needlepoint-and-these.html

By the way, Orna has an Etsy store that she uses for thread packs, jewelry kits and a few chart kits. What you will find there is definitely needlepoint!

Natalie's Fine Needlework has a new miniature rug design ready and it's a real honey!  The design is called "Istanbul" and it comes in three versions that can be combined to create a wonderful Turkish oriental pattern.  Although designed for 40 count silk gauze, you can create a rug on any count fabric you design if you simply adjust for the right size of ground fabric.

Pocket Full of Stitches has new canvases in but the thing we haven't seen before are their Hug Me bags.  You can check out the inside pockets as well as see the various sizes and styles on their blog.

Randi at World in Stitches just posted a new Tapestry Tent canvas of a pair of cardinals sitting among poinsettias. It's gorgeous.  When Randi showed the photo on Facebook, folks said they thought it was the canvas Liz Dillion was painting right at the January TNNA show.  I'm not sure about that but I am certain this is lovely.  Speaking of Tapestry Tent, Susan Roberts (which owns Tapestry Tent) has updated their website (second link below).  There are seven pages of new designs to admire.

http://pocketfullofstitches.blogspot.com/2015/03/ann-wheat-pace-trunk-show-fall-wedding.html

I'm particularly fond of Ann Wheat Pace's larger crosses.  You can even fill in the corners to make a package wrapped with ribbon if you don't want a religious symbol.
