Breaking News: Patt and Lee UPDATED

Patt Lange just announced the death of her husband and business partner Lee.  Together they were Patt and Lee Designs and also Pajamas and Chocolate (the hand painted line).  Lee made wonderful wooden items to display their canvases while Patt designed.  We send condolences and hugs to Patt and her family as they work to cope with this loss.

UPDATE:  Chris Lewis is now distributing Pat and Lee canvases.  Shoppers can ask Pocket Full of Stitches (owned by Chris's wife) for help finding canvases.

How to Needle Felt a Mushroom

Lalabug has a wonderful video showing how to needle felt a mushroom that i thought you'd enjoy.  It creates a dimensional item that could be added to your needlepoint later.

The techniques used are ones used to create this needle felted cat from Brenda Stofft.  Brenda will teach this at Needle Works in Texas next September.

If you are more interested in needle felting onto needlepoint canvas instead of creating a dimensional item, I have helpful information and a tutorial here.

Visiting Stitch

Horse Country Chic made a quick trip to my neck of the woods and visited Stitch in Middleburg.  The shop is only about an hour drive from me but it's in an area that is hard to reach and not close to any errands so I've never taken the time to visit.  Bad Jane!  It does sound like fun.

The equestrian and hunt canvases are very popular in the area because Middleburg is the center of a very wealthy horse farm area.  Think Jackie O and Mr. Mellon.  Needlepointers in the area are rather traditional so horses, dogs, belts, rugs, foxes and the like sell well here.  But as you can see, snarky canvases are also available.  Stitch sounds like an interesting shop!  Here is their website.  Right now they are open Wednesdays through Saturdays, although you can call and get them to open up just for you with a little notice.

The Wing Nut Turner

Deanna has trouble turning those big wing nuts that tighten our table and floor frames, so she had a tool made to turn them for her.

Julie pointed out that sometimes you can get the big black knobs from the hardware store to make the wing nuts easier to turn but this doesn't work if your original wing nuts are an odd size the hardware store doesn't stock.

If you have the same problem and you are interested in having something similar made for you, email Jon at and tell him you want what he made Deanna.

Frank's Bride in Cyberspace

If you are a fan of Halloween canvases, this is one you must see!  This is a Barbara Elmore/Sundance canvas called "Frank's Bride."  It was stitched by Barbara herself and she is going to offer a cyber class on Facebook about it starting August 1st.  You will buy the canvas from your favorite store (Ruth's shop has it on sale) and arrange your own supplies.  Barbara will have an optional lace kit available your shop can order if you don't have lace scraps laying around.

If you are interested in unusual embellishment techniques, even if you aren't wild about Halloween themes, this is going to be a fabulous class by an inspired teacher.  You can read more about it on Barbara's Facebook page.

The Needle Puller

While looking for something else, I stumbled across this great tool on the New Needlepoint site.

It's a needle puller, perfect for tugging a needle through a thick mass of threads.  I hadn't seen one before.  It's probably not a Must Have but it's a very nice little item to have around, just in case.

Do you have some interesting and useful tools in your stitching stash?  If so, Tell All in the comments below.  (Or if today's the day Blogger won't let you comment, just email me at chillyhollow at hot mail dot com.)

If you are a member of the Embroiderer's Association of Canada or have friends who are members, you might want to get a copy of Needle Guide, published by the Shuswap Chapter of EAC.    The details are here.

If you aren't a member or you want something a little smaller, how about this laminated sheet to size needles from Inspirations magazine?

Learn with Lycette's Lessons

Thanks to this note from Horse Country Chic, I've learned that Lycette Designs plans an online How To Needlepoint class via Instagram.

It's geared toward younger folks (hence the postings on Instagram) and will probably just be the basics, but it's a great idea to help people who don't have a stitching friend or shop to show them.  The details will be posted to Jessica's Lycette blog.

The Newest Mystery Class is Fleur UPDATED

Ruth Schmuff has revealed the newest mystery class starting this July—it's "Fleur" the royal hamster from Kimberly!  This will be a quick class, as it is happening in the summer when there are lots of distractions, but it's a real cutie. I'll update this as Ruth posts progress reports.

UPDATE:  Stitching animals is always hard as folks are scared to death of needle painting (also called thread painting).  Looks like Ruth is doing a modified needle painting technique mixed with a variety of other stitches to create the little Fleur's body and paws and face.  Interesting!

UPDATE #2:  This was a quick class. Fleur has a tiara now (and some fabulous backgrounds).

UPDATE #3:  Here is Fleur the hamster made into a lovely pillow.

The Tenth Anniversary Sale

Today is Gay Ann Roger's Tenth Anniversary sale to celebrate the ten years since she set up her website.  I am a big fan of her feminine, delicate designs and will certainly do a little browsing to see if there is anything to tempt me despite my problems counting to three accurately.  I know she will have both her Echoes of Elizabeth Sampler and the Echoes Tudor Rose Sampler available, plus something new is promised.  Gay Ann usually sells out of her chart kits quickly, so if you want to pick up something special, don't dawdle.

Let's Try Something Different

The world of blogging is slowly dying, which means there is less needlepoint information Out There for me to mention.  All you have to do is check the blog list here to see how many blogs have not published in a year or five or more!  I don't have enough articles to publish every day now unless I start writing original content, which I don't have the time to do.  Writing even this short notice took me over 30 minutes this morning. time that could be spent stitching, doing chores, or even reading a good book.  So I'm going to switch to publishing articles every other day here on the odd days of the month and publishing an article about stitch guides on the Chilly Hollow Stitch Guides Blog (available by clicking on the magic carpet photo in the right hand column) every other day on the even days.  This will start June 3.

Occasionally I'll dig up an old article here for you to read.  There's a lot of good stuff.  Blog's ten years old here at Blogger and I started blogging using Yahoo's defunct 360 blogging tools at least a year before that.  Of course all the earliest information is gone, disappearing when 360 was shut down.  I published articles on both blogging sites for around six months when I learned that 360 was going to go dark.

If you show up here and there's nothing new, check out the CH Stitch Guides Blog because it must be an even day.  Or use the search function to find all sorts of fascinating things from the past.  A good topic to search on is "Bonnie," for example.  I won't tell you why, you'll have to discover for yourself!  Or read through the tabs just under the header where I have all sorts of answers to commonly asked questions in the world of needlepoint.

Sorry, but everything changes.  I am trying to keep blogging without increasing my work load too much.  Facebook is taking more and more of my time as I try to manage Needlepoint Nation there.  It is harder than you would think being a good hostess to twelve thousand needlepointers, especially if you have a busy and full real life going on, too.
