Breaking News: ANG Seminar is Going Virtual

The American Needlepoint Guild's Seminar in the fall was cancelled but it's being held virtually!  Registration starts June 1 or June 3, depending on if you already registered for the cancelled venue, so be ready.  However, nothing is linked on their website yet.  That may not happen until June 1.

A Free Harry Potter Stitch Guide

You don't see many Harry Potter canvases since most would be copyright violations and J.K. Rowling's lawyers keep that in check.  However, the new designer Hook and Harbor has some cute ornaments that reference these much-loved books without being copyright violations.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/HookandHarborCo?section_id=28144373

To top off the fun, Jinny Barney has done a free stitch guide for the Wizard Glasses Ornament.  Her treatment of the glass in the glasses is unique, too.
https://stitchstyleblog.com/2020/05/wizard-glasses-ornament/

Thanks, Jinny!  Ok, who is going to re-read one of the Potter books this summer?

Goldwork with Ruth: The Movies UPDATED

Today's fun is courtesy of Ruth Schmuff of Bedecked and Beadazzled.  She has posted three little videos about using goldwork, specifically pearl purl, on a painted canvas.  Each video is short and deals with one step in using pearl purl (sometimes called purl purl) on your canvas.

Ruth Does the Twist (with Lazy Daisy Stitch)

Today's fun is a video by Ruth Schmuff of Bedecked and Beadazzled teaching how to create a feather with a Twisted Lazy Daisy Stitch.  It's fun!  Made me dizzy twisting, though!  LOL

A Snippet on Scissors

Inspirations magazine has an interesting brief article on scissors in this week's e-newsletter.
https://mailchi.mp/inspirationsmagazine/embroidery-news-issue-461636?e=cb5b277f1f

There is a bit about the history of scissors and it discusses the various types of scissors and what works best for various needlework projects.  There's even a bit about why folks use scissor fobs.

Inspirations is an expensive but gorgeous magazine from Australia.  They do a weekly free newsletter that is also gorgeous.  I enjoy reading it each Friday morning when it lands in my email In Box.

Let's Go Rescue Dovo Scissors UPDATED

Jessica Grimm's latest blog posting alerted me to the fact that Dovo Scissors in Germany is in financial trouble.
https://www.jessicagrimm.com/blog/embroidery-bits-and-bobs7911269

I know a great many people love Dovo scissors, so it is time for fans to buy a new pair to try and give the company a little time to get their financial house in order.  It would be especially nice if you bought from Jessica herself since she's a small business in Germany and hard hit by the quarantine rules right now.
https://www.jessicagrimm.com/store/c25/Scissors.html

UPDATE:  If you were curious about Broche, here's more information, and Jessica has added new types of Dovo scissors to her online store.  See?  That's how it works in needlework businesses:  buy something and you support the craftsmen who made it, the distributor who gets it into the stores, and the shop that sells it to you.  Go Dovo!

Books for the Left Handed Stitcher

Linda just asked on Needlepoint Nation what books were recommended for a left-handed stitcher. Here's what folks told her:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/NeedlepointNation/permalink/2971483752928763/

In case the link goes bad, here are the books recommended.  All are out of print.
Davie Hyman's Diagonal Basketweave has a section on basketweave for lefties.

Left-handed Needlepoint by Regina Hurburt, 1972.

The New York Times Book of Needlepoint for Left-Handers by Elaine Slater, 1974.

UPDATE:  Also recommended is Yvette Stanton's The Left-Handed Embroiderer's Companion, 2010.

A Facemask Cover in Needlepoint UPDATED

This free design is fun, but I think it's not very practical given the constant laundering a fabric face mask needs.  Sure would be a fun display item for a needlepoint shop, though!
https://lifetart.com/2020/04/16/quarantine-needlepoint-mask-cover/?fbclid=IwAR0TKKZG4N0duNUrBcJySO7rB6m9e3OoD1ro8JyMr7ellK4vSdgQgpDGfts

Making a Needle Lace Leaf: The Movie

Tricia Nguyen of Thistle Threads has posted a video on how to make a needle lace leaf using a metal thread called Silk Scallop Trim.
http://thistle-threads.blogspot.com/2020/05/using-new-frostings-threads.html

You can buy Silk Scallop Trim from Tricia, but note she is shipping only every two months right now since she's overwhelmed with orders and cannot get any help to manage all the orders that are flowing in.  She also has to limit visits to the post office for safety's sake.
https://thistle-threads.myshopify.com/products/silk-scallop-trim

She's using one of her specialty threads but you could do this with probably any metal thread that can be stretched like bullions.  Tanja Berlin sells a wide selection of bullions.  They are typically cut to length and then attached like a bead but bullions can be stretched out and couched into position.
https://berlinembroidery.com/product-category/hand-embroidery-supplies/goldwork-supplies/metal-threads/

You might also try this with the gimp from Painters Threads.  No idea how it will turn out but I like experimenting!

Mary Corbet and Cosmo Variegated Cotton Floss UPDATED

Mary Corbet has written an article about cotton flosses that are color fast and it includes a short review of Cosmo variegated cotton floss from Japan.
https://www.needlenthread.com/2020/05/cosmo-seasons-variegated-embroidery-thread.html

I really like Cosmo's regular cotton floss.  It has a huge range of colors so you can easily find 7-11 shades of anything almost.  I am not as big a fan of their variegated because the colors don't really appeal to me but if you like the colors, this is a terrific cotton floss.  It's more expensive than DMC but it's good stuff.  Here's where I buy mine, at a local quilt shop that also carries Presencia's Finca perle cottons in size 8 and size 12.
https://www.webfabrics.net/cgi-bin/Store/store.cgi?.s0&lastmenu=&menu=submenu-1100.html

Digital issues cost $3.50 each.  Hard copy issues of the magazine are $7.00—$8.50 for the current issue--unless they are on sale (which they are right now—stock up!).  Currently it looks like digital issues are available only for issues that are sold out in hard copy.

Bunka Bunka Bunka: The Movie

I own a bunka brush. I don't use it often, but very occasionally it comes in really handy. Needlepoint.com has done a short video about using a bunka brush to create a fuzzy texture.
https://needlepoint.com/blogs/needlepoint-know-how/all-about-the-bunka-brush

The spines are rather soft, not as stiff as something like a copper brush used to clean rust from metal.  And the bunka brush itself is smaller than you would think.  But it works very well.

Enjoy the little movie!
