Trish Burr has written an article with ten ways to improve your satin stitches.   More tips are promised so I will update this as Trish publishes further articles.

Some of the tips only apply to embroidery (such as #2 Using the Correct Fabric) but it is worth reading and thinking about if you want to make your satin stitches smoother and better looking.
