Monthly Clubs Removed by Google UPDATE

Folks, the Monthly Clubs tab has been removed by Google for "violating community guidelines."

This is the 6th or 7th time this has happened since January, with Google targeting mostly the articles in tabs that contain plenty of reference material.  I have appealed this (of course) and if Google does what it has in the past, the article will soon be restored.

Until then, I am sorry that Monthly Clubs, which has plenty of daily visitors, is temporarily out of service.  Hopefully it won't be for long.

UPDATE:  It took all day but now the Monthly Clubs are back!  Thanks, Google.  May I suggest you look at what your algorithm thinks is a problem before you remove it, not after?

Saturnalia Stitching

I just stumbled across the designs created by Saturnalia Stitching.

Abbey loves books and architecture and retro designs, all of which show up in her pieces.  Her "Starry Skies" window with the moon and stars visible just over the piles of books in her window is just so me!  Then there is her "Bookish" ornament and coordinating needle minder....

However, you might be a sci fi fan or into retro music and film or even prefer counted canvaswork--Abbey does charts, too.  See what describes you best on her website or Instagram.

Charts for Charity - Maui Fundraiser

The Wool and the Floss has collaborated with Lisa of My Pink Sugar Life to create and sell a chart of hibiscus flowers that is a fund raiser for the American Red Cross' effort to help the fire victims in Maui.

The chart is $20 for a digital download PDF file that will create a four inch round on 18 count canvas.  A thread kit in Essentials or Pepper Pot is also available. (Add a note when you order with the thread brand and what color background you want, either sparkly blue or sparkly coral.) You can also order a piece of canvas with taped edges for an additional $8 if you don't happen to have extra canvas in your stash.  Of course it you are a 13 count lover, you can stitch the chart on that size. You'll just need a bigger piece of canvas.

Stephanie's Favorite Sky Stitches

Stephanie Dresher-Mandelbaum of Ridgewood Needlepoint has posted diagrams of her favorite sky stitches:  T-Stitch, Alicia's Lace 2, Double Hungarian, Sky 21, Sky 2, Staircase Revisited and Bargello Line Pattern 1 Variation.  She also recommends several overdyed thread brands (Waterlilies, Gloriana, ThreadworXs,  Planet Earth Six Ply Silk, and Thread Gatherer's Silk N Colors) for sky stitching plus metallics.

Oddly to say, I don't have a favorite sky stitch beyond basketweave.  Wonder what that says about me?

New Smaller DMC Storage Chest

DMC has a new size of its iconic wooden floss storage chest.

Right now the new smaller chest is only available bundled with various DMC threads.  Looks like the larger chest is also bundled with threads.  Most needlepointers already have plenty of threads.  You can find older DMC storage boxes on Etsy and eBay, though.  Here's just the first one that came up in my search.

Most of the ones available in the auctions or Etsy have plastic inserts but that's probably better for long term storage of threads than wooden drawers.

All About Needle Minders

Mary Corbet has started selling painted porcelain needle minders (which are unfortunately sold out already but keep checking back).  She explains the various types, how they work, and the sort that she prefers herself and sells.

If you get tired of waiting for Mary's to come back in stock, you can visit Jenny Adin-Christie's shop in the UK after August 9.  (They are on vacation until then.). She sells ceramic needle minders that are either animal shapes or florals.

Or go the DIY route, order buttons from Stockwell Ceramics, and make your own!  The only problem with going this route is that there are too many gorgeous buttons to choose from.

Vintage Candy Tins Storage for Needle Minders

Do you have a great many magnets you use as needle minders?  Wheelhaus Needlepoint has a cute video of a vintage hinged metal box they use to corral their needle minders and other tools on their Instagram.

Where can you find metal candy boxes?  I think the best place to start looking is Etsy.  Search for "vintage candy hinged tin boxes" and see what you come up with.  (The best boxes I found were Blue Bird Harry Vincent confectionary tins from England.)

I found this charming Whitman's Candy tin box.

This English box is decorated with a reproduction of a French romantic artist.

Are you an Art Deco fan?  This box is round and doesn't have a hinged lid but I like it a lot.

Here's another vintage English tin candy container with a knobbed lid that is in good shape and very attractive.

This West German chest type box is decorated with angels on each end.

Have fun browsing!

Helena Wintour's Catholic Embroideries

Mary Corbet stumbled across an online museum exhibit about Helena Wintour's embroideries.

The embroidery in question was done in the 16th and 17th Centuries for Catholic churches in England.  You'll remember in your history books that this is the time of Henry VIII and his banning of Catholicism.  In other words, this was a time when embroidering ecclesiastical designs for Catholic churches was very very dangerous indeed.

The Stonyhurst website has a 20 minute video about Helena Wintour, the times she lived in, and the vestments she created.  Below the video are photos and videos of some of her embroidered vestments with information about the symbolism they contain.  Sadly, there isn't much that explains the techniques used.

Needles for Nickel Allergic Stitchers

Recently several folks have mentioned allergic reactions when stitching with needles.  This is probably a nickel allergy so nickel-free or stainless steel needles are a good option to try for those with allergies.

Mary Corbet mentioned The Needle Lady's stainless steel needles.  She also sells easy threading needles.

Several folks on Needlepoint Nation use Pony Black tapestry needles.  Other types of needles are also available.  I'm not sure all are hypoallergenic, however.

No, the Pony Black needles with white eyes are steel with no nickel, making them hypoallergenic.  There are also size 28 tapestry needles with black eyes that are nickel free.

I've not tried either brand, being lucky enough not to have such allergies.  If you do, hope they work for you!

Breaking News: Annie Lane Has Died

Lynn Mason just announced the death of Annie Lane on Needlepoint Nation.

It is so sad.  Her funny animal designs were big favorites among stitchers, particularly her original Twelve Days of Christmas pieces.  Luckily Wellesley Needlepoint has licensed some of her work if you wish to add to your collection or just want to see her designs.

I don't know if her Etsy shop with her Annie Lane Originals line will continue.

Videos to Stitch By

Tricia Nguyễn is not only a specialist in historical embroidery, she knows metallurgy and has been spending time in Europe visiting artisans and learning about metal threads.  She's also stumbled across the YouTube video series about crafts posted by Business Insider on their video channel.

Apparently they are great to stitch to.  Have fun starting with the video of Mario Menegazzo's gold beating workshop that is linked to above.  You can find more videos along the same lines here, especially the So Expensive ones--

The Nashville Needlepointer and Laying Tools

Lita, the Nashville Needlepointer, shows how to use a laying tool on her Instagram page.

Laying tools come in all sorts of lengths and are made in a variety of materials.  I think Lita's is a porcupine quill, but you can get metal, wood, plastic, even bone laying tools.  In fact, if you have a really big needle or a knitting needle, you can use that as a laying tool if you aren't ready to invest in one yet.

Make sure you buy one that fits well in your hand.  Ask your local shop to let you hold what they carry or borrow them from stitching friends to hold.   I prefer small laying tools that are a bit fat but you may be a skinny, long laying tool fan.  Doesn't matter, it's what is comfortable for you to hold.

Bisque Needle Minders and Beeswax

If you collect teacups or just want a touch of English style on your current project, you might want to check out the new china needle minders Mary Corbet has started to sell.   (Unfortunately both items sold out immediately but keep your eye on Mary's shop to pick up one or both when they are stocked again.)

The painted china needle minders come in heart, square, circle or octagon shapes with various floral patterns and the occasional butterfly or dragonfly.

The beeswax petites are available four to a little box, making them perfect for the stitch who likes to wax their threads for beading, Goldwork, or to just tame that Kreinik that will not behave!

By the way, the floche color assortment packs are back in stock if you want to add some to your thread stash.

KCN Introduces Neck Lights

KC Designers has introduced a new product, a neck hung light.  It is a flexible, bendable U shape with  lights on each end that are rechargeable through a charging cord, probably to a USB port in a computer (although the information doesn't say).  These have three color modes so you can use a brighter or les bright illumination, depending on where you are stitching.  Or reading your needlepoint magazine or books in bed.

Here's a link to the Kansas City needlepoint website to buy one of these. I doubt the bulbs are replaceable when they burn out but at $18, you can probably just buy a new one.

Other brands are available that are similar.  Needlepoint Clubhouse carries an LED model with two color modes that is $5 more expensive and uses three AAA batteries.

Mermaid Tails Alert

Mermaid lovers will be interested in these mermaid tail needle cases.  The waist area unscrews and the needles are held in the top by a magnet.  (See the video in the Etsy shop listing)

Quite a few Etsy shops carry similar mermaid tail needle minders.

There are several mermaid tail canvases.  This one is from Oasis Needlepoint.

This one is from the Meredith Collection.

Here is Raymond Crawford's mermaid tail.

Patti Mann's is my personal favorite.

Plus Brenda Stofft has a mermaid tail scissors case.
