How to Insert a Canvas in a Turtle Bag Part One

Turtle Bags with their windows on the side for installing needlepoint panels are a fun way to show off your stitching.  You can buy all sorts of fun designs sized to fit, too.

But what do you do after you stitch the canvas?  This posting will answer that question in two ways.  But first, some background:

The inserts need to be roughly 5 1/2 by 7 inches.  It doesn't matter if you buy the slightly larger tote bag (with two panels for needlework) or a cross body bag (only one side panel), the opening is roughly the same dimension.  I strongly advise you make yourself a paper pattern that is 5 1/2 x 7, cut it out, and stick in in the window of the bag to make sure that will work.  REMEMBER:  You need more canvas than what shows through the window.  Take your cutout and trace around it on another sheet of paper, then measure a border of half an inch wider.  Cut that out and stick it in your bag to make sure that this is enough margin for the needlepoint to not shift around. You want your canvas to fit snugly in the opening.

Turtle Bags are made with a zipper at the top of the side where the windows fit.  See the photo above.   Inside is a stiff fabric panel that comes with the bag.

This photo shows the stiff fabric panel behind the first needlepoint panel I stitched.  I like to insert my panel and then carefully slide the stiff fabric panel back behind the stitching.  It helps keep the needlepoint from shifting around while I'm carrying it.  You don't have to do this, however.  It's optional.

But how do you finish the needlepoint before you insert it?  The answer is you don't have to.  What you see is the needlepoint panel I am removing after carrying the purse for six months.  The raw edges are simply trimmed to the size that fits in the panel.  They are turned under a bit because the bag mashed them that way while I carried it.  The stitched area is 1-2 rows larger than the 5 1/2 x 7 inch window.  The entire canvas's outside dimensions are nearly an inch wider than the design.  The basting stitches you see are because I basted a layer of black tulle over my stitching as I had beads and ribbon flowers I wanted to protect.

But what if you want a more finished look?  I'll talk about how to achieve that tomorrow.

The Needlepoint Ornament Finishing Book

The May/June 2022 issue of Needlepoint Now magazine has a review of a book I'd not heard of--Eleanore Macnish's The Needlepoint Ornament Finishing Book:  A Step-by-Step  Foolproof Guide to Finishing Needlepoint Ornaments.

The review says that the book is divided into sections covering Supplies, Things to Know, Cutting, Assembly, Trim, Making a Cuff, using a silcone mat to make a SilPress and Information.  The book is a small 4x6 inch spiral bound book with 25 colorful pages.  It costs $28 at Twisted Stitches in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Or you can buy it in digital download form from the author's Etsy store for $12.  Note you have to log into the Etsy website to download the PDF file.  You cannot use the Etsy app to access the download.

Also note that the author uses glue in her finishing.  If you don't want to use glue, you can hand sew things together but this will add substantially to the time needed to make up the ornament.

Best Travel Tools

Needlepoint for Fun's latest newsletter talks about the best tools for traveling.  They have great ideas, including a style of project bag I've not seen before, but their best tip is to take an extra packet of needles.

In fact, put a packet of needles in your wallet or purse so you have them at all times.  Needles are easy to loose and very hard to replace on vacation.

Gay Ann Rogers Sale Starts Today

Gay Ann Rogers' latest counted canvaswork design, Mystery in St. Tropez, will be offered for sale June 13 (today!) through June 15.   If you like counted geometrics, you'll love this.  St. Tropez is a mystery design.  On Gay Ann's home page you can see the center of the design which is the same for everyone.  You can also see the various choices for the sides and corners.  Each stitcher picks their own colors, then chooses which of the alternative sides/corners they like, so no two designs will be the same.  You'll be able to purchase the chart starting at 8 a.m. Pacific time from Gay Ann's website.

Not good at picking colors?  Not to worry.  Needle in a Haystack in Alameda, CA has assembled thread groupings for you.  Those are also posted on Gay Ann's home page.  If you see one you like, you can contact NIAH to order those threads and the colored canvas paired with them.

Gay Ann will be the guest for the June 22nd We Talk Fiber podcast to talk about this new mystery design, color and being your own designer the easy way.

Cheryl Asks a Question

Over at NP Nation, Cheryl asked a question a lot of us have wondered:  "How do you know which threads you can use a hair straightener on?"

For those who don't have a Facebook account, I'll quote Debbie Rowley's answer in full.

"I caution my classes not to use it on pearl cottons or braided threads (Silk Lame' Braid) - it flattens the twist and these particular threads are meant to be twisted. It works great on ribbons of all kinds (Neon Rays, Neon Rays+, Flair, Frosty Rays, silk ribbons, etc.), stranded threads (silk, cotton and rayon), and metallic braids (twisted tightly enough that the twist doesn't flatten)."

If you aren't familiar with Debbie, she's DebBee's Designs.  You can admire her designs and browse her charts and classes here--

Four Jean Hilton Books Reviewed

Melita talks briefly about four Jean Hilton books she owns in her latest blog posting.

I don't think stitchers today realize the impact Jean Hilton had when she first started designing with "string art" type stitches.  None of us had ever seen anything like this!

I will warn you these are all older books (the latest was published in 1995) and the diagramming isn't as good as books today because when they were published,  the software wasn't available.  But these are amazing books, all the same.  Jean Hilton had an astoundingly creative mind.

If you are interested, I found several places online that carry Jean's books.  They are listed in the order I found them.  The last link is to the shop that owns Jean's copyright where you can also pick up her charts.

Tanya Goes Picasso

Tanya Bentham has posted a fascinating face on her blog.  Tanya's an expert tutor on Opus Anglicanum, which is the medieval style of embroidery.  The face is done in split stitch I think.  The fascinating part is she used different colors to emphasize how the various parts of the face are stitched in different ways.  I found it absolutely fascinating.  I particularly loved how she rendered the eyes.

It will come in handy if I ever stitch a needlepoint face all in split stitch, which is something I'd like to try. I might not use lime, purple, sky blue, peach and pale yellow, though!

Reviews of Two ANG Chapter Publications

Melita has written reviews of two books published by ANG local chapters:  Golden Gate Canvas Workers' A Background Stitch Reference Book and the Lone Star Chapter's Grab and Go Stitches.

Both are excellent reference books so keep your eyes out for copies in stash sales.  You probably can find copies ssold at the California or Texas shops, too.  Do note that neither book has numbered diagrams so these are probably not geared toward beginning stitchers unless they have stitching friends to help them figure out what to do.

Cupcakes, Carts and More

JCreation Needlepoint has a series of fun ornaments that are made up at the tops of metal carts (included with the canvas).

Here is what the little carts look like made up.

JCreation also does an interesting line of sunglass cases that come with a key ring which I think could be used to clip the case to your purse or belt.

Very inventive designer!

How Ada Organizes

Ada Hayden of Eye Candy has tried various thread organization schemes over the years.  Here is what she does now.

How you organize is really personal.  I always store my threads by type as the first thing I think about is texture when I am making choices, but there's no one right way to do this.  You just have to think about how much room you have and what makes sense to you when you pick threads for your newest project.

A Needleart Judge's Reference (Revised 2021 Edition) UPDATED

The National Academy of Needlearts (NAN) just annouced they have revised A Needleart Judge's Reference.  The original was published in 2013 and the revised edition is dated 2021.

This is a must-have for needle arts judges and a useful reference for those who want to improve their needle art for exhibit.  If you want a copy, I suggest you email the Director of Judges' Certification to see how to purchase a copy.

UPDATE:  Brenda's Needlepoint Studio has done a review of this book.  She thinks it is a fabulous resource for anyone who is involved in needlepoint exhibits.

A Great Vegan Leather Bag for Needlepoint Inserts

Anna at Evergreen Needlepoint found a great small vegan leather crossbody bag with a 5x7 inch space for a needlepoint insert that will be covered to prevent snagging.

The Etsy store that sells these also has little pencil bags that also might work and there is a much larger bag if that fits your needs better.  I don't know the size of the display areas for those but the shop owner can probably measure them for you.

Pillow Finishing Definitions

Third Coast Finishing has a nice blog post explaining the different types of pillow finishes available.  They have lots of pictures, too, making it easy to understand the different terms your favorite shop or finisher uses.  If you can talk the talk, you can get the pillow of your dreams.

The Pat Mazu Mini Sock

Brenda's been working on a Pat Mazu charted mini sock.  The basis of the design is a Florentine pattern.  Brenda choose colors that made her think Mardi Gras.  (Pat's original is at the bottom of the posting.)

If you are tempted to try one of these, Pat's little stocking designs are often in Needlepoint Now and Needlepointers.  ANG has posted one online.

You can also pick up her charts here as well as her book about finishing your own needlepoint projects.

And of course Pat recently posted three free charts here on Blog.

The Smart Cookie Award for April

Just before the end of the month, Marnie managed to win my Smart Cookie Award for her clever use of GearTies to hold rolled up canvas for stitching in hand.

GearTies are reusable rubber twist ties used to bind equipment of all kinds.  You can shop a hardware store but I found a nice selection at REI.

Let's Stitch Cacti

Palma Seljan has been busy stitching quite a few of the Ashley Dillon "march" canvases that Susan Roberts sells.  Her latest is the Cinco de Mayo March.  The cacti on this one are magnificent!  I noticed because I have a seven foot version of these growing in my breezeway and what Palma did very much resembles what I water once a week.

Palma says she took inspiration for her amazing cactus plants from this video on YouTube. There are three ways of stitching cacti demonstrated, each wonderful, and each useful for those who have Southwestern designs in their stash.  Thanks for sharing, Palma!

By the way, here's how the canvas looks now that Palma's finished.  Cynthia Thomas is writing a guide for it.

Finishing Forms from Sarah Beth's Spot

Explaining exactly what you want in the finishing you are sending to a shop just got easier with the finishing forms from Sarah Elizabeth's Etsy shop.  She explains the forms this way--

"I've put together a set of finishing forms to help you organize your thoughts and send in your requests and preferences with your finished pieces when you mail them to a shop for finishing. There is a generic sheet as well as specific sheets for ornaments, pillows, stand-ups and stockings."

These are digital downloads available from her Etsy shop, Sarah Beth's Spot.

The Needlepoint Spied

If you are a music fan you might remember Tommy James and The Shondells.  You probably don't know that James got mixed up with the Mafia and that his manager was finally caught in the mid 1980s by the feds using a needlepoint sign hanging in his office.

Kreinik just announced via Instagram that color number 9132 "Lemon Grass" is discontinued.  They can no longer get the material needed to make this color. Too bad!

They still have some supplies available so if you need this, ask your favorite shop to order before Kreinik runs out of what inventory is left.

UPDATE:  Here's the announcedment on Facebook in case you don't have an Instagram account.
