Vibrant Beauty: Winter 2025 Mystery

Ruth Schmuff has announced the Winter 2025 mystery class--"Vibrant Beauty" from Romantzart.

The classes are set for January and February 2025.  Stay tuned. I'll update this article with Ruth's progress reports here as the class dates come and go.  By the way, Ruth had an idea about how to reduce shipping costs starting with this mystery.

The Best Ways to Stitch a Curved Line

Kreinik's Instagram page shows you how best to stitch a curved line--couch it!   They show examples from the master stitcher Jill Rigoli who likes to couch Kreinik threads with a thinner matching color in Kreinik or clear sewing thread if you can't access a matching color.

Chaparral takes another route--wrapped backstitch!

Wrapped chain stitch works, too, and is more dimensional.

Floating Embroidery: The Movie

You may not be familiar with Helen M. Stevens, but her embroideries of the natural world are amazing.  I recently saw an example of what she calls "floating embroidery" on her Instagram account.  Here it is in close up.

Here is the entire piece, which reveals this as a clematis seed head.

Here is Helen's YouTube tutorial explaining this very simple but effective technique.  She's working this on muslin (I think) but if you switch to a small, sharp needle (a beading needle, for example, or a crewel needle) you can do the technique on your needlepoint canvas without having to create a sketch of your design.

Helen is a big fan of Piper Silks' "Floss Silk," but any silk floss should work (and cotton floss will work, too, just without the light play you get from silk).  If you are a threadaholic, though, you should explore their goods.  They have sample color packs which are a good way to have some stitching fun.

Here is Helen's website if you'd like to explore her books, her tutorials and classes, greeting cards, etc.

How to Bead An Ornament Edge: The Movie

Dr. Jessica Grimm, an expert in historical embroidery, demonstrates how to bead the edge of a tiny sampler motif needle minder.  This will work quite well on needlepoint ornaments, too.

For the best look, you will need a thread color that matches your stitching.   I think she's right that a very long length of thread is the best way to go. Starting in the middle of a side is fairly important but if your ornament is round, just start at the bottom middle.  These appear to be size 11 beads (occasionally she calls them pearls but Dr. Grimm isn't a native English speaker) but you can use smaller size 14 or 15 beads for the second row for a more dainty effect.

If you are curious about making the needle minder, here is her tutorial.

New Stitch Booklet from Hearts for Hospice

I didn't know the Hearts for Hospice program has turned some of their heart stitches into a booklet!

The hearts were a project for the Kansas City chapter of ANG.  Their chapter website talks a bit about their project but there isn't a link to buy their booklet.  Email the chapter as Melita suggests to pick up a copy of the book.

How to Ruche Wired Ribbon: The Movie

Chaparral demonstrates how to ruche wired ribbon for use on a canvas.  It's surprisingly easy but be warned--don't use your embroidery scissors to cut the thin wire.  That will dull your scissors very quickly.

Poppy Monk Talks Waves

Poppy Monk shows off a wave patterned stitch that works seamlessly between background and lettering.  It is a very simple row of straight stitches but after you work five rows, the wave starts to appear.  It is particularly great in the sample they show because you use one stitch and only change colors when you get to the lettering but the stitch looks different because of the color change.

Hey there, cowboy!  Got some beads to corral?  Not to worry, The Wool and The Floss shows you how to lasso your beads so they stay right where you want them.  No more beads wandering off for you!

This works for any bead placement.  You don't have to be doing lettering to lasso your beads.

Shops Call them Put Ups--I Call Them A Pain

Shops call them put ups, those twisted loops of thread that make up skeins of brands like perle cotton.  They can be a real pain to open up and use but Mary Corbet has some tips on how to handle them without too much trouble.

I'll caution you that for some projects you need very long lengths of thread.  Think couching, darning backgrounds, types of needle weaving.  If all your threads are cut into pieces, you can't do those stitches.  Because of that I only cut a skein when I absolutely must, but Mary's way certainly is a good way to cope with these maddening skeins.  Just think before you cut, that's all.

Fun Finishing

I saw some cute finishing on Instagram today so I thought I'd share it with you.  First, Fire and Iris' latest Tarot design ("The Reader") is larger than the others in the series so it can be finished as a book or e-reader case.

If you are interested, here are the other smaller Tarot designs.

Abby of Saturnalia Stitching has stitched her Art Deco coasters and had them made up into a set.

Here are all the Art Deco designs, available in various sizes.

If your favorite shop doesn't stock them, Penny Linn's acrylic coaster set is available in either oval or square.

Heirloom Designs challenges us to get our needlepoint headbands ready.

How to Fake Beads

Francie at the FrancieNeedlepoints Instagram account shows off her fake beading-

To summarize for those who don't have an Instagram account, Francie uses either Fyre Werks or Neon Rays Plus in cross stitches to give her stitching a beaded look without beads.

Fyre Werks is a very shiny flat ribbon from Rainbow Gallery.

Neon Rays Plus, also from Rainbow Gallery, is also a flat ribbon-like thread with less sparkle than Fyre Werks but because many of the colors have metallic woven in, there is some shine.

Normally these two threads are used in long stitches to show off the metallic look but a tiny cross stitch fakes a very good bead!
