Ro Pace's Flowers of Italy is ANG's Stitch of the Month project for 2011. You can find this on the American Needlepoint Guild website. Just click on the January 2011 link at this page for the January introduction. More will be posted each month of the year as the project unfolds.

Notice that the materials list calls for a 14 inch by 10 inch piece of congress cloth. They aren't kidding, folks. You will need a piece this large to stitch the entire project. However, congress cloth shows damage if you rip stitches out. You can either substitute 18 count mono needlepoint canvas for the congress cloth in the instructions, or you can try the tips Gay Ann Rogers just posted on her website for dealing with ripped out areas on congress cloth.

If you go the 18 count route, the ANG list has posted you will need a 19x13 inch piece of 18 count canvas. Yes, this is going to be a big project on 18 count but it'll be fun.
UPDATE: Scarlet Thread has posted an update on the thread packs they are assembling for the 2011 SOTM.

This post couldn't come at a more timely moment as I have just decided to tackle the SOTM 2011, and was just wondering about the congress cloth. I've never used congress cloth ... do you have a recommendation as to congress cloth or canvas? I'm leaning toward canvas, but I'll take a look at Gay Ann's site before deciding. Thanks Jane.

Jane,
Earlier, I asked whether you would recommend canvas or congress cloth for the SOTM project. May I rephrase my question: What would you say are the merits of working the project in either medium? What are the disadvantages? Cheers.
Indiana Robin
IR, congress cloth is usually around 23-25 count versus 18 count mono canvas. You'll use fewer plies of a floss-type thread, a smaller sized Kreinik metallic, or a slightly smaller perle cotton.
I'd look at the materials list and see if you have the things that Ro lists or if you can get them easily. How comfortable are you adjusting the type/amount of thread? If you use 18 count canvas, you will need to adjust what Ro tells you to use.
If you stay with congress cloth and her recommended thread list, you'll have to be a bit more careful about ripping out since congress cloth holes are enlarged by the needle going in and out.
I think it all depends on whether you are comfortable figuring out what threads to use on your own, how much ripping out you normally do when following a chart, and how large a project you like working on.
Either way, it'll probably be a fun project. Ro Pace is a really talented designer.
As to your second comment, IR--if you haven't used congress cloth and the smaller diameter threads called for are easily obtainable, I'd try this on congress cloth. But I am adventuresome in my stitching.
If you are uncomfortable figuring out what threads to substitute in order to use 18 count, then you may want to stick with Ro's recommended materials.
I like working with congress cloth but it will show if you rip things out. If this is likely to drive you nuts, stick with 18 count.
Thanks Jane! I think I'll take the plunge and stitch the congress cloth. Nothing ventured, nothing learned. And the colors are so luscious that it will be beautiful, no matter what. I appreciate the advice.
