Buttons, Beads and Charms

When the counted thread shop only 30 minutes from me put everything on sale as they closed, I realized just how many buttons, charms and beads that counted thread and cross stitch designers offer these days.

I knew about Just Another Button Company, but I had no idea their line was so large and varied!

My very favorite buttons come from Susan Clarke Originals.

Just Nan has a huge number of charms for her designs that work well anywhere.

The Sweetheart Tree has even more, many of them sterling silver, small and quite delicate. In fact, I own several packages of crystal clear paillettes and plan to use some on the wizard's clothes. My paillettes are very small (they cover about 3 threads on an 18 count canvas at most), faceted on the front like sequins but with flat backs covered in paper to help the metallic shine.

But more about that tomorrow!

I am a novice needlepointer. I am looking for a canvas wherein I can learn a variety of stitches and not be "in over my head." Do you have any "beginner" recommendations?

Thank you.

Hello Nancy Novice! Sorry, I am silly before coffee in the mornings.

ANG has a section of their website created just for novice stitchers (or anyone else who wants to practice fancy stitches). It is called the Stitch of the Month program and it is here.

http://www.needlepoint.org/Stitch.php

Every year a different well-known teacher or designer charts 11 stitches and in December, they introduce a project that uses most or all of the new stitches for that year. Grab some blank canvas (even plastic canvas will do) and threads from your stash and try some of these projects.

There are a ton of free projects on the Kreinik and Rainbow Gallery websites also, but if you want to try something beautiful but a lot easier than it looks, you can't do better than Laura Perin's designs.

Here's her website and then her blog as she posts photos of new designs as she works them. The blog will show you just how easy her projects are.

If you have something you really like to stitch (dogs, geometric patterns, houses, clowns, Christmas, whatever), let me know. I'll see if I can dig up some good designs for you to learn fancy stitches on.

And by the way, I am so proud that you want to learn and stretch your stitching skills!

Thank you. Thank you. I will follow up on both of your suggestions and will keep you posted.

Your blog is a gem! I learn something each time I read it. Thanks for writing it.

My pleasure, Nancy. I've gotten a lot of help from other stitchers over the years so this is simply payback.

Besides, I love to talk about NP!

Hi Jane,

How come I'm saying over and over,

"Button, Button, whose got the button?"

LOL!!!

I'm always picking up buttons and other little things to use on my needlework. Lot's of fun to find new things as I'm out and about. And you never know when one will be just what you needed for a particular project! :-)

Cyn, you crack me up. I've used scrapbooking items, dollhouse things, things from my sewing box or my mom's, lots of odds and ends over the years. I don't put everything and the kitchen sink on my canvases but there's nothing I won't consider using if it's cheap, looks great or I can't find anything better.
