The One Million Page Views Giveaway

Rebecca Wood's Haunted House
Sometime in early May Blog hit a major milestone--one million page views!  This is pretty astounding to me.  The number when I first drafted this article two weeks ago stood at 1,019,475 which is the sum of the page views when Blog was hosted at Yahoo and the current page views here at Blogger.  Amazing!

dede Odgen's Tassel Wreath
In celebration, I'm teaming with RS to give away two needlepoint canvases.  One is a haunted house by Rebecca Wood and the other is an ornate tassel wreath by dede Odgen.  The tassel wreath is on 13 count needlepoint canvas with a design area that is 16 inches square.  The Halloween house is on 18 count canvas and the design area is 12 inches wide by 16 1/4 inches tall.  Note that this is the house and moon only.  I think a stitcher might want to stitch several more inches of background, depending on how this is finished, and there is room to add 2-3 more inches all the way around if you like. The tassel wreath piece doesn't have much canvas margin, especially since the edges have been turned under and sewn to prevent unraveling.  Still, these are both large canvases.

I'm going to include helpful books with the painted canvases.  Haunted house comes with two June McKnight books--her Architectural Stitches book and her Needlepoint Wisdom book--to help the contest winner get to work building a house with stitches.  These books are old and the book of architectural stitches is well loved but they are fabulous books for painted canvas stitchers.

Tassel wreath also comes with two books--Needlepoint 101 and Needlepoint 202 from Ruth Dilts.  These books are like new.  They show how Ruth stitches twenty different canvases with tips, stitch diagrams and encouragement to help anyone learn to stitch like Ruth.  The introduction to the first book is particularly helpful to those who are tackling a painted canvas on their own for the very first time.

Ok, for the rules:  Place a comment here telling me which canvas you prefer.  (Or email the same information to me at chilly hollowat hot maildot com.)  I'm hoping that intermediate level stitchers who are unsure of stitching painted canvases will enter this contest as the canvases are really more suited to someone with a little experience doing fancier stitches who has a stash of threads to draw on.  You have until June 5.  On June 6 our contest patron RS will pick a number between x and y for each contest.  I'll announce the winners sometime June 6.  (I'm not sure when, since RS has a somewhat busy schedule. )

If you are an experienced painted canvas person who could stitch these without much trouble, please don't enter.  I'll do a contest for you later.  Just enter if painted canvases are intimidating to you.  With a free canvas you can probably stitch mostly from your stash, you will be free to play around without the pressure of "ruining" the design--which is impossible, by the way--and you will have some help in the form of the books with each canvas.

This is very nice of you Jane, a nice incentive for stitchers. I think you have a typo there: I believe you meant the deadline is June 5 not May 5?

You are right! I'll change the date. Thanks Palma. Are you joining in the drawing?

I really like the Halloween house by Rebecca Woods. I am piloting an online class for learning how to do your own stitch guides. This canvas would be perfect. There is room for detail, bit it isn't so complicated to scare me. It would be a great canvas for embellishing also.

Good for you, Nancy! Who is going to teach the class you are piloting?

By the way, I've added you to the contest list.

The Halloween House by Rebecca Woods is my favorite. I love stitching Halloween canvases because you can try so many fun, wacky stitches that you might not put together on a "normal" canvas. I also love the colors of Halloween and this canvas would be a great place to use so many beautiful textured threads. Thanks for having the contest and congrats on hitting the one million mark!

Hi Jane,
Although I do not consider myself an experienced stitcher I am following your advice and let new stitchers experience the wonderful world of stitching. Besides I reached a point where I will need to turn a room in my house into a storage place for all the canvases I purchased this previous year. Plenty to do my friend.
PS: Love your new picture.

Thanks, Palma. The photo is courtesy of my brother who took a photo of me taking a photo of him. No one is safe from pictures when we are around! LOL

Janet Perry is teaching the class. We just received week 2 of the instructions. There is a yahoo group set up. So far, so good. Thanks for entering me into the contest.

The Chilly Hollow Needlepoint Adventure said...

Thanks for the information, Nancy. I knew Janet was doing a class for CyberStitchers on this, but I didn't think of it as a pilot.

Have fun playing around! Nothing beats the adventure of figuring out your canvas. Better than exploring the Lost Worlds of the Amazon, anyway (no snakes). LOL

This isn't through cyberstitchers. Maybe we are piloting it before she teaches it with them? I just know she said it was so inexpensive because it was a pilot. I am not a member of Cyberstitchers, so I don't know when theirs is scheduled.

The Chilly Hollow Needlepoint Adventure said...

The Cyberstitchers class Janet did was in the last month or so. I'm not sure if it was a formal class or a presentation, not being a member there either. Her website didn't really explain well but I am sure members will be able to tell us more if they see this.

I'm glad to hear she is developing a class and testing it with pilot stitchers. It's something folks really want to learn. Of course if you are brave, you can teach yourself but it is so much more fun to do with a group.

I like the Haunted House Canvas. I recently (within the pasr 2 years) returned to needlepoint. Have taken some classes including Tony Mineri's Back to Basic class. I am moving out of my comfort zone of continental and basketweave stitching

The Chilly Hollow Needlepoint Adventure said...

Good for you, Anon! Nothing like studying with The Headmaster to get you moving on the Needlepoint Adventure Road. I admire you for leaving your comfort zone and trying something new and challenging.

I love the Halloween House. I am in the same class with Nancy and the first two lessons have been very imformative.

Thanks for the information, Barbara. We look forward to finding out when the class will be offered formally after the pilot's over.

I just love the Rebecca Wood Halloween House. Stitching it from all stash would be interesting!

Jane, I love the Rebecca Wood canvas. It reminds me of a game we love to play on the Wii - Carnival Games - where I get to shoot at pumpkins, ghosts, and ghouls!

I'm trying hard to advance from beginner on painted canvas. And am seriously considering naming 2012 The Year of Painted Canvas at my house!

Over a million?!? That's crazy, girl!

I'm going to jump on the Rebecca Wood Haunted House -wagon... That piece is *so* me - I love Halloween.

My thread stash is improving with time - I'm heading to the needlepoint shop in a few weeks (once work slows down) to pick my final threads for the Lee canvas you were helping me with. I fully intend to add to my non-floss stash at the same time.... I think that moon might be crying out for some of the glow-in-the-dark Kreinik.... :-)

Thanks for hosting a giveaway! Can't wait to see who wins!

While I love Halloween, it is the Tassel Wreath that I would want to stitch, The colors are so rich and luscious! I can see it in silks and metallics.

I love your blog and check it several times a day.

What an awesome thing to do.....I would choose the tassel one because of my love of tassels and I can see lots of possibilities, but methinks you will say I am more advanced so don't enter me....and we both know I don't need any more stash! Way to go gal and congrats on the numbers...you are popular due to your knowledge, skill, and enabling...no wonder you are still Queen!

Vicky said...

Congratulations on the numbers is right! why don't you tell us all some day how many years you have been Chilly Hollow blog and what inspired you to start blogging, as you started it way before everybody else... Keep on blogging Jane! and no entry for me, please...but if I were I would definately want the Halloween House!

Hey Jane,

Thanks for your great blog. I would love to enter your contest as I think the tassel wreath would be great to try some new stitches on. I too am in Janet's cyberclass and have been trying various stitches on my canvases lately. I'm hoping one of these days I'll really get it right!

Thanks,
Mary Anne

The Chilly Hollow Needlepoint Adventure said...

Mary Anne, the more you practice, the more likely you'll get it right the first time. But it is the mistake that make you a better stitcher in the end, so keep making 'em! And have fun in Janet's class.

Why not a beginner's giveaway? :(
I don't mind any of the canvases, since I know nothing about them.As for the stash, stranded cotton can be used for needlepoint, right?

The Chilly Hollow Needlepoint Adventure said...

Deepa, I did a giveaway last October for a beginner--a beach angel canvas with all the threads and a stitch guide.

http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2010/10/dont-forget-to-enter.html

But of course you can use all stranded cotton for needlepoint. You can use any thread that'll go through the holes or can be couched down over them. My cat topiary garden is using stranded silk right now.

I would love, love, love to have the Tassled Wreath canvas! And I definitely am intimidated by painted canvases. Love learning by following your excellent blog!

Pick me, pick me, pick me (jumping up and down)...

Whitney and the Preppy Puppies said...

Congratulations, Jane! Your blog has been a big help for me the past year as I re-learn to needlepoint. Thanks for all that you do for the stitching community.
P.S. I'd love to win the tassel wreath. I think it would make a pretty pillow with a rich red silk dupioni backing.

Thank you for this contest, Jane--I LOVE the Haunted House by Rebecca Woods.

I promise to be grateful if I win. Barbara K

Barbara, you crack me up.

I really like the Tassel wreath canvas. Since most of canvas work has been on 18m, I find it a challenge to "upsize" my thread choices and usage to a larger canvas.

The Chilly Hollow Needlepoint Adventure said...

Theresa, I'm just starting to stitch on 13 count sometimes, too. It's sometimes very different and sometimes the same, depending on the stitches you use. Interesting, at any rate. I've entered you in the tassel wreath contest. Good luck!

The Roaring Girl said...

Hi!

I am certainly intimidated by larger canvasses...but would find a way to overcome the problem if I had something like Tassel Wreath to hand: my, my isn't that just lovely???

The Roaring Girl said...

I'd left a comment earlier, but now I suspect something went awry (and I'm willing to believe that it involves my kitten...). Anyway, the Tassel Wreath is *gorgeous*!

Not to worry, Radegunde--I added you to the contest.
