Flabbergasted

I'm flabbergasted to see that Blog has had over a million page views this month.  That astounds me since there have only been ten million page views since I set up the Chilly Hollow Needlepoint Adventure, probably in the summer of 2009.  I was blogging for at least two years before that at Yahoo but they discontinued their free blogging software and I had to find a new home here at Google's Blogger.

All I can say is thanks, and keep needlepointing!

Google Removes Another Important Page

Google has removed "Tutorials and Tips" from the section of important articles at the top of Blog.  I updated it with a new tutorial I found for textured hair, which triggers the "removed for Community Guideline violations" message.  No idea why this happens, but I suspect that Ai does the vetting now and it doesn't like old articles being updated with new information.  How to create hair using Tent Stitches on a Stick isn't violating any of the rules!

Please be patient.  I've appealed the removal.  Normally it takes anywhere from 2 hours to a day for something to be restored but this is a holiday weekend.  Eventually it should return and you can learn how to do another hair style with your threads and canvas.

Google Strikes Again

If you are trying to look at the Monthly Clubs tab at the top of the page, you'll get an error message because Blogger has removed it for "violating Community guidelines."

What did I do?  I added a new link to a new monthly club.  That apparently triggers an automatic removal these days.  This has been happening for over a year now with any of my tabs with lots of links to needlepoint knowledge.  I update something, it gets removed for no real reason, I ask for the decision to be reviewed by a human (I think the removal is done by Ai), and it'll be restored later today.

So please be patient and try again late today or tomorrow.

I'm sorry but there's nothing I can do about this.

March 20, 2008

While I was doing maintenance on Blog today I realized my first posting using Blogger was March 20, 2008.  That was seventeen years ago!  I was blogging for 2-3 years before that using Yahoo but when Yahoo decided to remove their blogging tool, I switched to Blogger and cross-posted both places for a year or so before the Yahoo blog went defunct.

As I write this there are 9,667 postings here.  Talk a lot, don't I?

Time flies.  Wonder if I'll make it to March 20, 2028?

Google Strikes Again

This morning I updated the Monthly Clubs tab and Google (which owns the Blogger platform), promptly removed it for "violating community guidelines."  This has been happening for months now.  I can't tell what guideline has been violated or which specific link (there are thousands) has triggered this automatic problem, so I just ask for review of this decision.  Once humans gets their hands on it, whichever tab has been removed will be restored.

But until then, if you go to Monthly Clubs and it's missing, blame Google.

Monthly Clubs Removed by Google UPDATE

Folks, the Monthly Clubs tab has been removed by Google for "violating community guidelines."

This is the 6th or 7th time this has happened since January, with Google targeting mostly the articles in tabs that contain plenty of reference material.  I have appealed this (of course) and if Google does what it has in the past, the article will soon be restored.

Until then, I am sorry that Monthly Clubs, which has plenty of daily visitors, is temporarily out of service.  Hopefully it won't be for long.

UPDATE:  It took all day but now the Monthly Clubs are back!  Thanks, Google.  May I suggest you look at what your algorithm thinks is a problem before you remove it, not after?

Suddenly Subscription to Blog Ends

I've heard from two different folks this week that suddenly their subscription to Blog has ended.  They want me to fix it.  Sorry to say, I cannot.  The behind-the-scenes workings of Blogger are off limits to those of us who use it.  When bugs appear, it's up to Google to fix them.

There are three things you can do.  First, try to resubscribe.  The drop down menu to Subscribe is 5/6 of the way down the home page of Blog, just below the big blue Blog with Integrity box.

Secondly, you can use an RSS feed reader.  I use Feedly but there are others.  These can be a little tricky to set up and you will need to have the URLs for all the websites you want to follow ready to copy/paste into the feed reader.  Note that blogs that are part of a website instead of being stand alone often don't work with feed readers.

The easiest way around this if the subscription stops working and you can't get it to go again is to simply bookmark Blog's URL and visit daily.  Remember, once you visit Blog, you can click on the magic carpet photo in the right side column to automatically visit the CH Stitch Guides blog.  You can return to Blog the same way.

Sorry about this, folks, but it's not something I can do a thing about.

Email Feeds of Blog Postings End July 2021

Google just announced that they are ending the widget that powers email feeds of blog postings on July 2021.  So shortly you will no longer get a notice that Blog is updated.  Sorry, but I have no control over this.  It's possible that another email widget will be made available but there are no guarantees.  I suggest you use Feedly or Feed Burner or Bloglovin or another RSS reader to keep up with postings of blogs that use Blogger like I do.

Of course, Blog updates daily so you can bookmark and visit each day.

BREAKING NEWS: Google Removes Destination Dallas

Last night Google informed me that the Destination Dallas 2021 tab was flagged as malware and removed it from Blog.  ?????

I have no idea why Google thought it was malware as the page is just a collection of links to needlepoint shop and designer websites, posted as a service to everyone in the needlepoint world to alert you to the latest products and designs.  It is possible that one of these links to hundreds of websites has been infected with malware.  It does happen.  That's totally out of my control.

I protested Google's decision last night; they reviewed it and restored the tab this morning.  It appears to be somewhat different than it was, but there's no way I can review it all and fix issues, so we'll just have to go with what they put back up.  If this happens again I will stop providing this service.  Stay tuned.

Let's Try Something Different

The world of blogging is slowly dying, which means there is less needlepoint information Out There for me to mention.  All you have to do is check the blog list here to see how many blogs have not published in a year or five or more!  I don't have enough articles to publish every day now unless I start writing original content, which I don't have the time to do.  Writing even this short notice took me over 30 minutes this morning. time that could be spent stitching, doing chores, or even reading a good book.  So I'm going to switch to publishing articles every other day here on the odd days of the month and publishing an article about stitch guides on the Chilly Hollow Stitch Guides Blog (available by clicking on the magic carpet photo in the right hand column) every other day on the even days.  This will start June 3.

Occasionally I'll dig up an old article here for you to read.  There's a lot of good stuff.  Blog's ten years old here at Blogger and I started blogging using Yahoo's defunct 360 blogging tools at least a year before that.  Of course all the earliest information is gone, disappearing when 360 was shut down.  I published articles on both blogging sites for around six months when I learned that 360 was going to go dark.

If you show up here and there's nothing new, check out the CH Stitch Guides Blog because it must be an even day.  Or use the search function to find all sorts of fascinating things from the past.  A good topic to search on is "Bonnie," for example.  I won't tell you why, you'll have to discover for yourself!  Or read through the tabs just under the header where I have all sorts of answers to commonly asked questions in the world of needlepoint.

Sorry, but everything changes.  I am trying to keep blogging without increasing my work load too much.  Facebook is taking more and more of my time as I try to manage Needlepoint Nation there.  It is harder than you would think being a good hostess to twelve thousand needlepointers, especially if you have a busy and full real life going on, too.

Blog Housekeeping

I've been rearranging things at Blog this last few weeks, adding new tabs under the header title and sorting things a bit differently.   I've got sections for the three main trade shows each year so you can check out the latest designs, the Monthly Clubs section has been updated recently with the clubs starting this fall, I have a section now for Interviews I've done on Blog so you can read those if you missed them earlier, there is a section of Tutorials and Tips to help you with tricky stitches like bullions or to understand how to use a laying tool or what stitches to use for hair or skin, Needle Felting and Beading have their own separate tabs as does Needle Painting, there is a list of painted canvases I've Blog-Stitched so you can look at those to understand how I approach choosing my threads and stitches, plus information about Canvas Embellishment,  I've listed Counted Thread Designers and their websites (if any),  there are sections about highly recommended Shops including ones that cater to international stitchers and shops that have a large selection of counted charts, and sections that answer the most frequent questions I see online—Where to Donate Unwanted Stash, Where to Have Designs Put on Needlepoint Canvas and How to Paint Your Own Design.

Hopefully this will help you find useful information, especially since very few people use the search box at the upper left corner of Blog to find things.

Shades of White

Karen at Nimble Needle shows off Kreinik's whites, listing both the new whites and the olds.  She also has words of wisdom about picking and substituting colors and choosing the right size of Kreinik for your canvas.  (Although take the "right size" with a grain of salt since stitch tensions vary.  We all have our favorite Kreinik size for our preferred canvas size.)

Visiting with Dianne UPDATED

This morning I made a visit to the A-Z Needlepoint website that used to belong to the Regal Rabbit. The shop has closed and the owner moved away to be closer to her family now that she's retired but the website has been turned into a personal blog.  UPDATE:  An employee of the Regal Rabbit says that the person posting here isn't Dianne, the owner of Regal Rabbit.  It is possible someone else purchased the domain name and is using it.

It was fun to listen to her talk about stitching a bit and the role it has in her life now and in the past.  I think you might enjoy listening, too.  Just get a favorite beverage, settle yourself down with your Internet device and enjoy.

Help with Borders

Mary Legallet has written a series of great articles about border stitches on her blog.

Bookmark Mary's blog if you haven't already as each month she tackles stitches for a certain area or effect.  Very educational!

If you need more borders help than just stitch ideas, treat yourself to Michael Boren and Carole Lake's latest Desert Island Stitches book--Ideas for Creative Borders.  Here's a bit about it. I found it really helpful working my Leigh Designs Gold Digger Miami border.

Voting Starts Today

Please note that I am away until at least 9 p.m. tonight, working as an election official so that folks in my county can vote in the Republican and Democratic primaries being run today.  This means any emails you send me today or any comments you post to Blog won't show up or be answered until tomorrow at the earliest.  I will be too exhausted to deal with them when I get home tonight since I have to get up at 3:30 a.m. to make it to the polls by 5 a.m. and cannot leave until all the paperwork is done and the ballots cast match the number of ballots handed out for both primaries.

Please go vote.  The work behind the scenes is enormous but voting is essential to the smooth functioning of our democracy.

Blog is Reborn

Regular readers of Blog will remember I asked back in October what folks like to read here. I'm making an attempt to cut down on the various chores I do each day so that I'll have more stitching time.  I asked for input and an amazing number of you revealed how you use Blog and what you think is important for me to keep.  Thank you!

Blog itself breaks down into three areas:

Daily updates, which tend to be news from blogs, websites, and Facebook.  That's the bulk of Blog postings these days.  Folks suggested I cut back to 3 times a week instead of a daily posting.  I may do that as blog news continues to dry up elsewhere but it doesn't save me time to do so.  I still have to read all the postings and pick the ones that are worth repeating.  That is what takes the time, not my creating links and brief descriptions.  I am just going to try to be more discriminating.  More and more things are published on Facebook only, which bothers me since some folks don't like or use social media, but there's nothing I can do about it except hope you non-FB folk can see at least some of the links.

Informational tabs, which list things such as Monthly Clubs, Classes and Events, new items from the latest trade show, etc.  These are more reference material items.  I'm going to stop updating the listings of classes and events.  Although people use them, they are a lot of work to keep up to date.  I'll leave the list of counted thread designers, list of tutorials, etc. alone for now.  The bulk of the work is already done on these.  I have combined the list of shops that service non-U.S. customers with the list of favorite shops already and will stop updating the Tutorials and Tips tab as folks rarely use it.  I'll still keep a list of new items coming out as the shops who don't go to a trade show use these and regular stitchers also look at this a lot.  It's some work to do but that is more manageable than other areas.

Blog-stitching is the most popular thing I do.  Folks love watching me stitch things and listen to my explanations of what I've done and why.   That's the most popular part of Blog, actually. I hope to do more of this in 2016, since I've stopped doing models and writing custom stitch guides.  I simply don't have the time with Real Life chores and the grind of constant deadlines is getting to me.  I may do a model here and there, but I won't be stitching 4-6 a year any more.  I will still do guides, but for canvases that I own, love and want to stitch.  Many of those will be blog-stitched although folks who want all the information on how to reproduce what I did in one compact piece will be able to purchase a guide.

So, that's The Plan for 2016.  I hope it frees up more time in my busy day to stitch.  Happy New Year!

Blog Changes Once Again?

I've been blogging about needlepoint regularly since 2005, and I am finding myself repeating what I've said many times before.  Now that I've moved announcements of new items to the various trade show tabs, consolidated monthly clubs in one tab, put the best tips and hints I've found in one place, have a blog just for new stitch guide announcements, and have started tracking all the classes, talks and exhibits I hear about under one tab, there is less to talk about on Blog.

Blogs are dying anyway.  During a typical day I'll read 15-20 blogs and perhaps 3 of them will have information that is useful to us needlepointers.  And that's on a good day!  The rise of Facebook has meant that fewer people have time to blog and fewer still say things that are helpful to their fellow stitchers.  Since last winter I've scrambled to post two articles daily and this has only gotten harder and harder as summer has come and gone.  It's also taking more of my time to come up with things to say that are useful.  Is it time for Blog to retire?

I am considering posting only a couple of times a week while still updating the tabs, but I'd like to know what you think, faithful readers?  Has Blog outlived its usefulness?

What do you like to read here?  What don't you ever pay much attention to?

How should I proceed?
