If you are making a list for Santa and you look stitching books, read Ruth Kern's brief article on classic needlepoint books. I am familiar with most of the books on her list and they are classics. Brenda Hart's books in particular I refer to almost every week. A new version of Jo I. Christensen's Needlepoint Book is due out next year but I think I'd splurge and get a copy of the current volume anyway. It is a true encyclopedia of needlepoint today. It's been out since 1999 and is not that expensive if you shop around.
