Another good darning pattern book is "Side by Side: Pattern Darning in the 21st Cenury" by Susan Jones. Susan provides a lot of patterns, showing clear diagrams and providing a stitched sample. Then she goes a step further and shows how to combine them to create borders, samplers, and overall motifs. It's all black and white, but it's a wonderful resource.
