It looks pretty easy once you have the disk. Let me know if you try this!

Hi Jane,
I did try this and loved it. Wrote about it here:

This looks fabulous! I will definitely be ordering a Kumihimo disc! Yay another project :-)

Just checked - Hobby Lobby has the disks!

I've actually used this technique on a canvas, and love the way it looks when couched onto a swirly area.
Thanks everybody! I'll update the article to let folks know the comment section has more information.
I bought the Kumihimo disk yesterday along with a package of bobbins at Hobby Lobby and, with my coupon, both cost me only $13.oo. The bobbins are really cool - they are actually large spoolies (dating myself, but for you youngsters, spoolies were flexible, pink rubber spools that you wrapped your hair around for a pincurl set back in the 50s!)
I am in the process of trying various threads to braid, starting with Appleton wool, then will try Naturally Caron Spa yarn (a silky bamboo yarn that is very soft and luxurious), then I will try cotton crochet thread! Such fun!
Thanks for letting us know where you got yours, Dawn. We are looking forward to an update!
Update on my experience with the Kumihimo disk: The Appleton wool, while making a beautiful, rather small braid, shredded before I got even 6 inches of braid! The Naturally Caron Spa yarn unraveled before I got even an inch of braid! Okay, so now I will try to find some satin rattail cord. As my best friend says, "I'm on a Mission"!
Thanks for the update. Can you get some size 5 perle cotton to test?
Yes, I have#5 perle cotton. I will test it & report back!
Good luck. I am told perle cotton is very durable. My "local" shop recommends it for belts.
Thanks, Jane, for suggesting #5 Perle cotton. I used 36" long threads and came out with a beautiful 1/8" braid about 14 inches long. I did learn that you need a weight attached to the braid to pull it down and keep the braiding even (I used some needle magnets clamped onto the end of the braid) and you need to keep the spools close to the loom or they will tangle as you turn it! Thanks for letting me play :-)
Fascinating! I thought perle cotton would work, depending on how fat a braid you want at the end. Good to know that I was right. Thanks for the tips that help make a beautiful braid. When you are done, how about photos and I'll do another article based on your experience?
