Chuck Pinnell Leather Bags Are Worth The Mondy

This is why you scrim and save to send your needlepoint to Chuck Pinnell Leather for finishing.

The canvas design is from Zoe Pischke, who I think is Julie Pischke's daughter.  Julie designed some fabulous carpet bags for needlepoint back in the day.  Looks like Zoe has inherited her eye for what works on large bags.

Hockey is Big at Harvard (So Is Needlepoint)

Hockey is big at Harvard--really big!  I was charmed to read that Joe Bertagna (Class of '73) not only was a big hockey star back in the day, he's a major needlepointer who just auctioned off his Boston sports needlepoint pieces for charity.

Here's the actual article from the March 2026 issue of Harvard Magazine.

Way to go, Joe!

Stitch School (Needlepoint Now Magazine Publication)

Needlepoint Now magazine is coming out with a book called Stitch School!  I haven't seen it yet since as I write this it's not out yet but apparently there are matching videos for those who are visual learners.

This is called Volume One, so hopefully it will do well and the magazine will publish more volumes.

How to Secure Thread When Doing Long Stitches

Patricia Sone has posted a short video on her Instagram account showing us how to use a pin stitch (I call these Locking L stitches because of their shape) to secure a thread before you work a series of long stitches.

It's really pretty easy.  This is a technique used in Japanese embroidery and it does hold well.

How to Cope without Wooden Stretcher Bars

Needle Works in Austin, Texas has decided to address the difficulty of getting stretcher bars by using 3-D printed versions.

These are plastic but it's easy to push in thumbtacks or staples.  Once you finish your project, yank out the staples/tacks and put them away.  These are the same width as regular stretcher bars.  Just like the wooden version, you can reuse them over and over again.  NWKS says they are sturdy and available in white, teal blue or beige plastic.  The shop is working to have the size printed on them, too.  They also say you can mix them with wooden stretcher bars in case you have a pair of 9 inchers but need 7 inchers for that 7x9 inch canvas.  You cannot mix the 3-D printed bars with mini stretcher bars, though.  The 3-D ones are the width of regular stretcher bars.  They cost between $6-8 for a pair of two.

These are not online yet but call or email the shop to order.  Kudos to the folks in Texas for coming up with a unique solution to the shortage of traditional wooden stretcher bars.

My Beading Heart (Nancy Cucci)

Brenda's Needlepoint Studio worked another Nancy Cucci chart, this one called "My Beading Heart."  It's very pretty and like all Nancy's designs, has lots of beads and sparkle that don't show up in photographs.  Brenda also learned how to cover white canvas with paint while working this, a useful skill!

You can find the instructions in the January/February 2010 issue of Needlepoint Now magazine.  It's out of stock at the magazine's website but you can find copies on eBay or perhaps borrow one from a friend if you didn't subscribe back then.

Create a Tiny Christmas Light

Colleen at The Wool and The Floss has a really clever way of making a dimensional Christmas bulb for this cute moose canvas.

For those without a Facebook account, Colleen uses Flair, ties a knot in the end, then she goes down through the painted Christmas bulb, leaving the knot on the top.  Next, she creates a second knot with a French knot.  These two knots are padding.  The third step is to do satin stitches over the knots.  Then she ties off because she plans an open stitch background, so each Christmas tree light tangled around the antlers needs to be started/stopped right there, instead of dragging the Flair to another light bulb.  That would show though the open stitch background.

Smart!

About Needlepoint Trade Shows (and Much More)

Clare of Oz Needle and Thread talks about the two main wholesale trade shows for needlepoint in this interesting video.  I thought you might like to know a bit more about these shows since the Orlando show is in a couple of days.   Note that these are not open to the public.  Only shop owners, designers and tool/thread makers are allowed to go.

Here is what it costs a designer to go to the Orlando, Florida show.

Here is how you put your canvases and stitched samples on display at the shows.

If you enjoyed the above, you might like to listen to the interview Fiber Talk just did with Claire.

Here is the Needlepoint Angels website, in case you want to participate.

Here are the padded hanger canvases that Oz Needle and Thread sells.

Here is the finishing video plus links to where to buy the plain padded hangers.

Poppy Monk Needlepoint's blog has five tips to make your basketweave smooth.

Let's wrap up February with some fun background stitches, courtesy of Poppy Monk.

When you are trying to choose a background stitch that is decorative, make sure you can do at least three repeats of the pattern.  Otherwise, the fancy stitch won't show up well and you are better off with something small and plain.

Breaking News: Business Insider Interviews Kevin Lustik

Every morning as I drink my coffee I read emails and browse a huge range of news sites.  This habit served me well this morning as I stumbled across Business Insider's interview of Kevin Lustik!

You'll remember  Kevin's hilarious and thought-provoking pieces, which you can browse on his Instagram or Facebook accounts.  His original creations are for sale, too.

Folks like Kevin are spreading the news that needlepoint is an art form, just like painting.  I hope he at least encourages you to try creating something original from the heart.  That's what art is, after all.  And if you don't feel creative today, you can enjoy Kevin's creativity instead.

Fiber Talk Demonstrates Mounting Canvas on Stretcher Bars

If you haven't used stretcher bars before, you probably wonder how to attach needlepoint canvas to them once you have the four sides assembled.  Fiber Talk's got a nice video demonstrating how to do this in great detail on their website.

Gary puts artists tape (available online at art supply stores like Blick's) over the raw edges of his canvas so threads don't snag there.  It's a nice touch and many shops sell painted canvases already taped on the edges.  If you have to buy blank canvas, ask your shop to tape the edges for you.  Some may be willing to do that. If you buy a roll, get one an inch wide.  The color doesn't matter.

He uses angle irons to keep his stretcher bars square.  You can also buy FrameLoks which are plastic and fit inside the angle of assembled stretcher bars.  They are sold in sets of four, come in various colors, and are attached with thumbtacks.  The second link below shows how to use them.  FrameLoks cost a little more than hardware angle irons and aren't as readily available, although many needlepoint shops carry FrameLoks these days.

You can use a door frame to check squareness instead of buying a carpenter square.  Beware:  some door frames are not actually square!  Check against a counter top or window frame if the window opens and closes easily (they get out of true as well).

Gary uses thumb tacks to secure his canvas but I prefer staples.  I find thumbtacks fall out and are harder to remove than staples.  I have a heavy duty staple and heavy duty staples that I use and then pry out when taking the canvas off.

Gary also uses the Arrow brand staple puller that he got from Lowe's hardware.  Prices vary so shop around.

Remember, if you are using Evertites or Adjust-a-Frames instead of regular cheap stretcher bars, don't attach the canvas at the corners.  Those must stay loose so you can adjust the tension.

UPDATE: Donna G. sent Gary lots of further information so he did a second video with a few little points that will help you.

Rare Earth Magnet Warning

Go Stitch Studio (which sells needle minders) reminds us that rare earth magnets, while strong, are also brittle.  I have to say that I've never had this happen to me, but then I don't sell needle minders so I don't have a ton of them.  The worst I've ever had happen is a rhinestone has fallen out and those are easily glued back in position with glue and a toothpick.

So don't be freaked out.  Have a little browese at Go Stitch Studio instead.  (Don't miss the Le Tigere matchbox needle minder!)

Let's Talk Tension

Let's talk tension--and I don't mean worry and fretting--I mean stitch tension.  As Poppy Monk points out on their blog, stitch tension is an important but overlooked means of improving the look of your stitching.

I've discovered stitching when I'm upset or worried is not a good idea if I want my stitching to match previous stitching, so having an all tent stitch project I can pick up to relax at those times works well for me since I find it easier to control tension in basketweave than in any other stitch.

UK Church Kneelers Full of Charm

Simon Martin Art takes us on a tour of church kneelers in Norfolk, on the east coast of England.  Use the right side arrows to see dozens of them.

They are charming!  Wonder why there is a kneeler with dice?  My favorite is the tractor one.  That was stitched by a farmer's wife.  The tractor is the most important piece of machinery a modern farmer owns.

How To Paint Your Own

Quail Run posted five tips for painting your own designs on their Facebook page.

I've taken the liberty of repeating their tips here for the folks who don't have a Facebook account.  Thanks, Quail Run!

"Here are five practical tips for painting your own needlepoint canvas (a fun, budget-friendly way to create custom designs):

1. Choose the right paints and consistency
Use high-quality acrylic paints thinned to the consistency of half-and-half or light cream so they flow smoothly into the canvas intersections without bleeding or clumping. Artist-grade options like Liquitex Soft Body or Golden Fluid acrylics are recommended for better colorfastness and longevity, as cheaper craft acrylics (like some FolkArt or Ceramcoat) can fade, turn milky, or perform poorly over time.

2. Prep your canvas and workspace properly
Secure the edges of your needlepoint canvas (mono or interlock, typically 13–18 mesh) with tape to prevent fraying and keep it taut. Work on a clean, flat surface, and consider taping a printed chart or outline underneath if tracing. This helps keep everything aligned and makes it easier to paint precisely at each intersection.

3. Use affordable tools and the right technique
Opt for inexpensive synthetic brushes (the stiff canvas will ruin them quickly, so cheap packs are ideal). Alternatively, acrylic paint pens/markers (like Posca) are beginner-friendly for cleaner lines and less mess, especially for simple or outlined designs. Paint one color at a time, dabbing small dots or fills at each canvas intersection rather than broad strokes.

4. Plan and reference your design carefully
Start with a graphed pattern (from cross-stitch charts, your own sketch, or digital printout) where each square represents a canvas intersection. Lightly pencil guidelines on the canvas if needed (they'll be covered), then paint methodically—often from the bottom up or section by section—while constantly checking your reference to avoid mistakes. Tracing paper or a light box can help transfer designs accurately.

5. Test and let it cure fully
Do a small test on scrap canvas to check color flow, drying time, and how the paint sits in the holes. Once painted, allow the canvas to dry completely (often 24+ hours) before stitching to prevent smudging or color transfer to your yarn. Avoid over-thinning the paint, as it can weaken adhesion.

These steps make custom needlepoint much more affordable and creative than buying pre-painted canvases! Start simple if you're new. Begin with basic patterns or traced images. Happy painting and stitching!"

Printing a Simple Canvas At Home

Jhandy_creates has posted a quick printed canvas tutorial on her Instagram.

She says she used a Epson America Eco Tank.  Unfortunately, there are many models in the Epson Eco Tank line so I can't tell for sure which one she used, but I am guessing it might be an ET-2400 or an ET-3850 which are the only ones I saw that costs less than $200.  I think the important thing is that the printer will take needlepoint canvas through its rollers without jamming.

By the way, handy_creates has a more extensive series of videos about this process.  Start here, then use the left side arrow to move to the next video.  There are four.  (You will need Photoshop and Canvas software.)

Stitch Beautifully An Essential Guide to Needlepoint UPDATED

Meredith Willet, owner of M's Canvashouse, the Meredith Collection, and an esteemed teacher, has released a book!  It is titled Stitch Beautifully An Essential Guide to Needlepoint.  Waste Knot has posted a short summary of the book on their Facebook page.

I'm going to quote Waste Knot here as many folks don't have a Facebook account--

"New book alert!  Stitch Beautifully: An Essential Guide to Needlepoint by Meredith Willett is a wonderful new book featuring foundational knowledge and techniques for both beginning and experienced stitchers. There are all kinds of tips and tricks, information about when and where to use different kinds of decorative stitches, and a glossary explaining dozens of terms — among other things!"

The Meredith Collection website describes the book as 8 x 10 inches "with a lay flat wire O binding."  It's starting to be available in all the shops, so call up your favorite to order.

Just as a reminder, Meredith has also just published "Needlepoint Quick Guide" which is a good guide for beginners.

UPDATE:  Stitch-Stash says this about the book (I am quoting part of their rave review in a shop e-newsletter)--

"You’ll find chapters covering:

• What is needlepoint

• Foundations for every stitch

• Needles, frames, and tools of the trade

• Threads 101

• Beginning and ending your threads

• Stitch families at a glance

• Decorative and compensating stitches

• How to choose the right stitch

• Beads, baubles, and bling

• Stitch bag essentials

• Tips I wish everyone had told me

…and so much more."

What Do I Do If It's Not Stitch Painted?!

Paige of Blue Ridge Stitchery explains how to handle areas of a canvas that aren't stitch painted* but have blended shading of multiple colors.

For those who don't have an Instagram account, Paige suggests
A) using one thread in a medium shade worked in one open stitch or in T-stitch.
B) using multiple thead colors but only one stitch to unify the area and make it recede.

*Stitch painted means a canvas with every canvas thread intersection carefully covered with one paint color so there is no guessing as to what color goes there.

Tent Stitch Versus Embellishment: The Drama!

WipStitchNeedleworks has brought the controvery out into the open.  (and I'm snickering)

Folks, stitch any way you want.  No rules here (except the thread goes through the eye of the needle, to quote SharonG).

Making Woven Picot Seagrass: The Movie

kb_threads demonstrates just how easy a woven picot is on her Instagram account.

It really is just that easy.  Want to have woven picots you can bend to shape?  Use an upside down V-shaped piece of beading wire, poke each leg through the canvas holes and secure on the back side, then use a waste stitch at the top to secure the tip like shown in the video.  Come up with your thread in the base of your upside down V and go down at the tip to make the third leg.  Then weave as shown above!

How to Choose Your Next Needlepoint Project

Needlepoint.com's latest blog post has tips on choosing your next needlepoint project.  Of course the shop is promoting their business but their tips are sound advice when you can't make up your mind.

Florentine Fancywork (Toni McKelley)

Melita G. found a copy of Toni McKelley's "Florentine Fancywork" on eBay and has started to gather supplies to stitch it.

She bought more threads.

She's working the floral border.

Melita has finished the floral border and has worked a section of Bargello.

Now she's working the interior bands and playing with the color.

The main area is quite pretty.

A starbust has appeared.

Now Melita is working the "wheels" which I think are traditionally called pomegranates in Bargello.  I could be wrong, though.  I can't count reliably so I don't do Bargello or Florentine stitching.

The tiny striped hearts are next.

Now Melita has done the diamond shapes toward the bottom.  Nearly done!

Painted Stitches Ribbon Sampler (Barbara Bergsten)

Jan at StitchLady's Adventures is going to stitch Barbara Bergsten's "Painted Stitches Ribbon Sampler."  This is a painted design on 14 count, so Jan will be using much thicker threads than I usually work.  (I'm an 18 count gal.)  So this is going to be very interesting!  You can see the unstitched canvas and the threads Jan will use in her first posting about this project.

Despite a few small hitches, Jan's working away on her ribbon sampler.

And it is done, so now she's doing a few original designs on bookmarks, just for fun.

Wrapped Back Stitch: The Movie

Colleen at The Wool and The Floss demonstrates wrapped back stitch, which gives you a smooth curved line.  It's perfect for stems, leaf veins, whiskers, even straight hair (although if you do rows of this, it is a bit tricky to wrap without catching neighboring threads).

Using a 3-D Printer in Needlepoint

I've always been intrigued by 3-D printers but I never thought they'd be useful in needlepoint until I discovered what Debbie Rowley of DeeBee Designs uses them for!

The Woodlawn 2026 Exhibit

Despite the cold and rain, Melita took advantage of a break in the weather to visit the Woodlawn exhibit.  She summarizes what she saw here with an emphasis on counted pieces as that is her thing.

Woodlawn posted the list of award winners on their website.

Many thanks for those of us who can't make it to Alexandria, Virginia this year!  As more folks post about the show, I'll add to this article.

Here is a brief glimpse of the show on Woodlawn Plantation's Instagram.

Woodlawn has posted a video of the 2026 People's Choice award.  It appears to be an embroidery.

Lori won a second place ribbon for this Charley Harper bird beauty.

The Price of Success

Needlenook of La Jolla posted a photo of a huge pile of boxes on their Instagram account with this statement--"I'm working on a bigger mountain today! And as hard and quickly as humanly possible. This will make about 100 packages in the last 2 days!

The needlepoint industry has been inundated with excessive amounts of orders in recent months. So many new stitchers have come on board! Which is exciting in a way, but in a way it makes for a long wait. Between the orders and the shortage of Zweigart canvas from Germany and qualified painters, orders are taking a very long time to be filled. The designers are really feeling the brunt of it. So I am going to say at the very minimum it could be 5-6 months... and that is not an exact science! I am sorry that I don't have better news than that. Please be patient with us, give us some grace. We are all in this together, wish I had better news than that."

Here is A Dragon's Tale's view of the situation from a designer's perspective.  I've also heard that white 18 count canvas is hard to get right now.  Go for ecru or the colored canvases like pale blue instead.

We are used to instant gratification but needlepoint isn't Amazon or Walmart--it's a collection of small businesses trying very hard to make a large group of customers happy.  Be patient and keep looking for something small and cute that's available now to tide you over while you wait.

Hurrah! Jane Aurich Designs Available Again!!

"Snow Queen in Ice Forest Stocking" from Jane Aurich's Nutcracker designs

I was thrilled last month to realize that Jane Aurich's designs are available once more.  You can browse her incredible work on her website and Instagram.  She created amazing Nutcracker pieces, beautiful stockings (there is a series with beautifully detailed birds), Southwestern designs, wonderful Santas --and an occasional charming Mrs. Santa-- small floral ornaments and scissor cases, and some detailed animal designs.  There are a few new designs called Plain Jane from Jane's daughter Letitia, which are simplified versions of the more detailed originals, meant to tempt newer stitchers to test the waters with her designs.

You can order some of the smaller designs (mostly Christmas Santas, angels and a few adorable animals) from the Jane Aurich Etsy shop.  You can also visit two shops that carry Jane Aurich's work--What's the Point? Needlepoint in Ohio and Three Kittens Needle Arts in Minnesota.

Long time needlepointers will remember Jane's twin sister, Joy Juarez, whose work is available now through Fleur de Paris.  Joy was equally talented but with her own style.  I am thrilled that their work has outlived them and their classic pieces are available to modern needlepoint artists.

Here's to Jane & Joy, needlepoint artists extraordinary!  💕

Threadaholic Alert: Color Dreams Naturals

Ruth Schmuff has great news for lovers of bamboo threads like Rainbow Gallery's Mandarin Floss-she has a new thread called Color Dreams Naturals, a blend of silk and bamboo.

It isn't on the Bedecked and Beadazzled website yet, so I don't know if it is a floss or perle-type thread, but I'll update this as soon as it's widely available.

Mustache: The Movie

The Wool and the Floss has a great idea for a mustache that has both thin and thick areas:  alternate basketweave with Colonial knots.

A Quick Stitchly Demo

If you are curious about software used to create your own needlepoint chart, you'll want to watch the short video that Vintage Point Finds posted to Instagram.

Once you have your design, you have to transfer it to needlepoint canvas.

Stitchly was created for cross stitch so you can't diagram fancy stitches with it.  Here is their website if you want to explore more.
