Cases for Your Needlepoint Stockings

The Needle House in Houston, TX will stock Stocking Cases.  If you have a lot of precious needlepoint stockings, you'll want to see these!  They are made of vegan leather,  hold two stockings each, and are lined with velveteen.

Apparently Victoria Whitson is the distributor.  It is possible that the velveteen Stocking Valet can be purchased separately if you have more than a few stockings to store.  Ask your favorite shop to check on this for you.

Thread Organization Apps

There was a recent discussion on Facebook about apps you can use to organize your threads.  Here is everything folks mentioned plus items I found through online research.  I haven't tried any of these.

People have used XStitch for years even though it was created for cross stitchers.  It has lots of threads in the program.  Available for iOS and Android.

StitchLog - project tracker and thread organizer - currently in beta

Threadalog - thread and bead organization tool; only for Apple devices, available at the Apple store and at

Pointed Needle - also called Pointed! - available for iPad and iPhone only through the Apple store; requires iOS 26.0 or later

Thready - only for iPhone

Needlentory - Apple devices only?  (in app purchases)

Breaking News: Labors of Love Needlepoint Shop Moving UPDATED

Mark just announced that the Labors of Love shop in Atlanta is moving a short distance away this summer, probably late July/early August, 2026.  The new location is close to the current shop but is double the space.  They will have to close for a couple of days to move everything and unpack, but this will give them room for more threads, classes, canvases--and fun!

UPDATE:  Finishing and special orders won't be impacted by The Move.

Removing Creases from Needlepoint Canvas: The Movie

Penny Linn has posted a video on their Facebook page explaining how to get creases out of needlepoint canvas.

To summarize for those who don't have a FB account, get a clean white towel, put the canvas down on top of the towel near an edge, then fold over the towel to make a sandwich of towel-canvas-towel.  Use an iron on the cotton/wool setting and press down on the towel.  Go over the entire canvas area with the iron.  You may have to do this several times.  They don't mention using steam, but you can, although it softens the canvas threads slightly so the piece is no longer quite as stiff.  Probably better to just use pretty high heat on your iron.

Threadaholic Alert: Silky Thread

Stitch-Stash is now stocking a new silk fiber called Silky Thread from Moon Drake and Company.  Here are the colors available.  There are 26 yards to a skein.  This is mulberry silk, which I think means the silkworms are fed exclusively on mulberry tree leaves.

The thread looks like it is a loose twist meant to be used as a single strand.  Ask Stitch-Stash for specifics before you order.

Does Taylor Swift Needlepoint? A Mystery

"Evermore" by Bexley Needlepoint via Etsy

Does Taylor Swift needlepoint?  I've been pondering this question today.  I cannot find any direct evidence for her being a needlepointer except for this--

If you look carefully at the framed needlework, it appears to be embroidery. It's fitted smoothly in a hoop, which is difficult to do with needlepoint canvas.  The slightly frayed edge of the ground fabric doesn't look like needlepoint canvas to me, either.  Do you suppose it's a case of folks who wouldn't recognize needlepoint if they fell over it calling what we do "knitting" again?  Except this time it's hand embroidery being mislabeled as needlepoint?

Only Taylor Swift knows for sure.

Michael's Stocks Needle Felting Supplies

Michael's, the big box crafts store, is starting to carry a wide range of needle felting supplies, from tools to roving to kits.  If you want to try needle felting on your needlepoint, it's a good place to order.  I would order online, though.  In my experience, the local Michael stores aren't likely to have as wide a variety of items as they have available online.

Hobby Lobby also sells needle felting supplies if you have one of their stores in your area.  Etsy is also a good place to shop for supplies, especially good quality roving.  My advice if you are just trying this is to buy a simple block and a single needle with a handle (makes it easier to hold when you stab the roving hundreds of times) plus an assortment of wool roving colors in animal colors (unless you are creating the hair of a clown or something else very colorful).

Also see "Needle Felting on Needlepoint Canvas" in the tabs above for advice, tips and tutorials.

Then Melisa moseyed on over to The Sign of the Arrow in Ladue, Missouri.  They donate their profits to charity and are known for their huge stock of belt canvases.  Melita should have gotten that Brenda Hart book (her books are the ones I use most) but not to worry--they do mail order!

Stitch Names Are Confusing

Mary Legallet of Whimsical Stitch talks a bit about stitch names in her weekly Wednesday posting of a stitch diagram.  Bottom line:  the same stitch may have multiple names!  (and multiple variations:  the Chilly Hollow Stitch, for example, has four-five variations I know of)

Stitches can't be copyrighted, but the diagrams can be and are, which is why many social media sites don't let you post a stitch diagram without the author's permission.

May 2026 NJNA Chapter News

The New Jersey Needle Artists chapter of ANG is back with their bi-weekly newsletter.  There is ANG Seminar news, including the adorable frame weights that are available.  Lowry has a new gadget that attaches to your floor stand to allow you to watch your tablet, laptop or phone as you stitch.  They also have a new spring green color for those who want more excitement in their life.  Daylight also has a new light that goes around your neck and shows true color.  It is called the DuoNeck Go.

You'll want to check out the Fraymeworks Frames, sold by Needlepoint Clubhouse, that work as stretcher bars and a frame for the finished piece both.

The second May posting is up with new bags, threads, classes, and more!

The 2026 NAN Exemplary

Melita went to this year's Exemplary, which is what the National Academy of Needlearts calls their yearly seminar exhibit, and won ribbons!  MAJOR ribbons!  Here is her report.  Eventually NAN will put photos of the 2026 winners on their website but it's too early for that yet.

UPDATE:  The People's Choice winner for 2026 was an Alison Cole goldwork poppy stitched by Helen G.

Good luck to Mary Alice Stinton who took a tumble at NAN.  I think she's fine, just needed to go home to recover.

What Type of Scissors Are Best?

Thanks to EGA's Greater Pacific Region, I learned about this article on TextileArtist about various scissor brands and what works best for various types of needlework.

There are plenty of links if something catches your eye.  I'd recommend small 3-4 inch long scissors for needlepoint that fit your fingers well.  If you travel with scissors, go with a cheaper brand you don't mind losing in transit.  Keep the good ones at home in a place where no one will grab them to cut paper, plastic or other non-textile items that dull blades fast.

Creating a Plump Little Bunny

Sharon of SM Wollman Designs just posted a video of the little bunny her Ann Hanson (I think) Santa is holding.   Sharon used trapunto to make the rabbit rounded and dimensional.

It's an easy technique.  Note that she stitched the bunny as usual first, then she pinned a rectangle of muslin to the back of the canvas behind Mr. Bunny.  (You can cut the slit in the middle before you pin it on if you are nervous about cutting the canvas when you slit the muslin after it is attached.)  Then you turn the canvas back over and backstitch around the shape of the rabbit.  Normally I use one ply of cotton floss in either a matching or contrasting color, depending on whether I want a bit of a shadow or not.  It helps to make your backstitches small and pretty close together.  Once the muslin is backstitched into place, stuff the muslin with as much padding (I use cotton batting) as needed to make the bunny rounded and dimensional as you want, then stitch the slit together to close it.

It's quite easy to do and gives a lovely effect.

Threadaholic Alert: DMC Met Retors Cotton

Pam asked the members of Needlepoint Nation about DMC's Met Retors Cotton.

I'll summarize the discussion here for those without a Facebook account--this thread is fairly cheap ($1.31-1.59 for a ten meter skein) and is a sort of cotton tapestry thread.  You don't ply it, just use it as it comes off the skein although some folks have plied it and say it is thicker than one ply of regular DMC cotton floss.  Folks really like it on 13 count, but a few have used it on 18 count.  It's a little tender so shorter lengths are recommended.  Some compare it to Very Velvet as it has a matte look.  It makes great cording.

Cathe Ray (owner of Needle in a Haystack and a thread expert) says that mat cotton (retors) has been around for 50 years but it fell out of favor due to the stale color selection.  She's happy that it is now available again with new colors in the line.

You can see it on the DMC website here.  There are 230 colors available.

How to Cope without Wooden Stretcher Bars UPDATED

Needle Works in Austin, Texas has decided to address the difficulty of getting stretcher bars by using 3-D printed versions.

These are plastic but it's easy to push in thumbtacks or staples.  Once you finish your project, yank out the staples/tacks and put them away.  These are the same width as regular stretcher bars.  Just like the wooden version, you can reuse them over and over again.  NWKS says they are sturdy and available in white, teal blue or beige plastic.  The shop is working to have the size printed on them, too.  They also say you can mix them with wooden stretcher bars in case you have a pair of 9 inchers but need 7 inchers for that 7x9 inch canvas.  You cannot mix the 3-D printed bars with mini stretcher bars, though.  The 3-D ones are the width of regular stretcher bars.  They cost between $6-8 for a pair of two.

These are not online yet but call or email the shop to order.  Kudos to the folks in Texas for coming up with a unique solution to the shortage of traditional wooden stretcher bars.

UPDATE:  Sara Leigh at Rain City Needlepoint gives a review of the 3-D printed stretcher bars they stock in the shop.

Adding Embellishment to a Canvas

The Instagram account Sophie Stitches and Styles shows off her latest finish, a canvas from Plum Stitchery called "Celestial Menagerie Pillow."  Sophie very cleverly adds touches of specialty stitches here and there to highlight her favorite parts of this mostly tent stitched cutie.

My Beading Heart (Nancy Cucci)

Brenda's Needlepoint Studio worked another Nancy Cucci chart, this one called "My Beading Heart."  It's very pretty and like all Nancy's designs, has lots of beads and sparkle that don't show up in photographs.  Brenda also learned how to cover white canvas with paint while working this, a useful skill!

You can find the instructions in the January/February 2010 issue of Needlepoint Now magazine.  It's out of stock at the magazine's website but you can find copies on eBay or perhaps borrow one from a friend if you didn't subscribe back then.

Jeannie's Windmills (Pat Mazu)

Melita worked Pat Mazu's 'Jeannie's Windmills" from ANG's chapter project book and had it made into a cute project book.

ANG's chapter project books are sent to chapter presidents for free to use as chapter projects, just another benefit from joining the American Needlepoint Guild (ANG).

Create a Tiny Christmas Light

Colleen at The Wool and The Floss has a really clever way of making a dimensional Christmas bulb for this cute moose canvas.

For those without a Facebook account, Colleen uses Flair, ties a knot in the end, then she goes down through the painted Christmas bulb, leaving the knot on the top.  Next, she creates a second knot with a French knot.  These two knots are padding.  The third step is to do satin stitches over the knots.  Then she ties off because she plans an open stitch background, so each Christmas tree light tangled around the antlers needs to be started/stopped right there, instead of dragging the Flair to another light bulb.  That would show though the open stitch background.

Smart!

Compensation Tip

Her Heartland Soul has an interesting compensation tip for working background around lettering.

Basically, she works the outside of the background stitch in columns to help keep her place as she works around the cursive letters in her saying.  Clever!

About Needlepoint Trade Shows (and Much More)

Clare of Oz Needle and Thread talks about the two main wholesale trade shows for needlepoint in this interesting video.  I thought you might like to know a bit more about these shows since the Orlando show is in a couple of days.   Note that these are not open to the public.  Only shop owners, designers and tool/thread makers are allowed to go.

Here is what it costs a designer to go to the Orlando, Florida show.

Here is how you put your canvases and stitched samples on display at the shows.

If you enjoyed the above, you might like to listen to the interview Fiber Talk just did with Claire.

Here is the Needlepoint Angels website, in case you want to participate.

Here are the padded hanger canvases that Oz Needle and Thread sells.

Here is the finishing video plus links to where to buy the plain padded hangers.

Something Very Special

I was thrilled to see this lovely piece of silk ribbon embroidery, done by Cynthia Thomas for the 2025 Needlepoint Reunion.

It showcases Treenway silk threads and silk ribbons and was on display to let shops know just how magnificant their threads and ribbons are.  The design is from Anne Brinkley.

Here is the Treenway website if you'd like to browse and plan a purchase.

Make Your Own Variagated Thread: The Movie

OzNeedleandThread on Instagram has a tutorial on how to make your own variegated thread.

As a bonus, she shows how Splendor naturally comes apart into three bundles of four plies each.  Pull one bundle out and separate further, repeat until you have the number of plies you need.

By the way, here's the champagne cork canvas she uses as an example.  There is a matching needle minder!

Eliminate Basketweave Ridges

Poppy Monk Needlepoint's blog has five tips to make your basketweave smooth.

I'll add my own tip:  If you are a beginner, avoid tightly twisted perle cotton threads.  Wools and wool/silk blends are more forgiving and will spread a bit to fill the holes and lie nicely next to each other.

Coco Frank Studio demonstrates making ribbon roses with a Colonial knot and running stitches.

Four Fun Background Stitches

Let's wrap up February with some fun background stitches, courtesy of Poppy Monk.

When you are trying to choose a background stitch that is decorative, make sure you can do at least three repeats of the pattern.  Otherwise, the fancy stitch won't show up well and you are better off with something small and plain.

Breaking News: Business Insider Interviews Kevin Lustik

Every morning as I drink my coffee I read emails and browse a huge range of news sites.  This habit served me well this morning as I stumbled across Business Insider's interview of Kevin Lustik!

You'll remember  Kevin's hilarious and thought-provoking pieces, which you can browse on his Instagram or Facebook accounts.  His original creations are for sale, too.

Folks like Kevin are spreading the news that needlepoint is an art form, just like painting.  I hope he at least encourages you to try creating something original from the heart.  That's what art is, after all.  And if you don't feel creative today, you can enjoy Kevin's creativity instead.

Fiber Talk Demonstrates Mounting Canvas on Stretcher Bars

If you haven't used stretcher bars before, you probably wonder how to attach needlepoint canvas to them once you have the four sides assembled.  Fiber Talk's got a nice video demonstrating how to do this in great detail on their website.

Gary puts artists tape (available online at art supply stores like Blick's) over the raw edges of his canvas so threads don't snag there.  It's a nice touch and many shops sell painted canvases already taped on the edges.  If you have to buy blank canvas, ask your shop to tape the edges for you.  Some may be willing to do that. If you buy a roll, get one an inch wide.  The color doesn't matter.

He uses angle irons to keep his stretcher bars square.  You can also buy FrameLoks which are plastic and fit inside the angle of assembled stretcher bars.  They are sold in sets of four, come in various colors, and are attached with thumbtacks.  The second link below shows how to use them.  FrameLoks cost a little more than hardware angle irons and aren't as readily available, although many needlepoint shops carry FrameLoks these days.

You can use a door frame to check squareness instead of buying a carpenter square.  Beware:  some door frames are not actually square!  Check against a counter top or window frame if the window opens and closes easily (they get out of true as well).

Gary uses thumb tacks to secure his canvas but I prefer staples.  I find thumbtacks fall out and are harder to remove than staples.  I have a heavy duty staple and heavy duty staples that I use and then pry out when taking the canvas off.

Gary also uses the Arrow brand staple puller that he got from Lowe's hardware.  Prices vary so shop around.

Remember, if you are using Evertites or Adjust-a-Frames instead of regular cheap stretcher bars, don't attach the canvas at the corners.  Those must stay loose so you can adjust the tension.

UPDATE: Donna G. sent Gary lots of further information so he did a second video with a few little points that will help you.
