I know nothing about silver or matchboxes but I am pretty sure this is not needlepoint.

I'd guess this is embroidery on painted linen. I'd also guess the threads were hand tinted with paint after stitching since this is dated 1938. As far as I know, overdyed threads were not common then. What do you think?
Interesting, regardless. I suppose a regular box of matches is slid into the area below the stitching and the silver matchbox holder sits on a dressing or occasional table to make the utilitarian object of a paper matchbox more decorative.

I agree. I always was a lucky researcher so I guess this has spilled over into needlepoint.
