There are quite a few free sources online of free stitch diagrams for those who'd rather save their money for canvases or threads or who just like being able to leave their stitch dictionaries at home and look at stitches online. I'll list the best ones here, in alphabetical order. (Note there are many more, but some require quite a bit of hunting to find the stitch diagrams, so those I omitted.)
The American Needlepoint Guild's Stitch of the Month 1998-2011. ANG used to post a monthly stitch diagram publicly. It is now members only but I think this link will work for the older information.
Chandail Needlework's Stitch of the Month collection is one shop's useful list of needlepoint stitches. A new stitch appears every month.
Fire and Iris Designs' Stitch Library is unusual as it has videos demonstrating the stitches, perfect for those who prefer learning by watching. This is a small collection but covers the basics.
Johanna's Embroidery Stitch Diagrams covers the basic embroidery stitches, many of which are also used in needlepoint.
KC Needlepoint's Stitch Vault can be accessed on their website at the link below or through Google Play or Apple Store apps. To get the app, search for KC Needlepoint (it's a shopping site as well).
Louise's Needlework's Hints and Tips for Needlepoint has both stitch diagrams and help with other techniques such as beading or using Neon Rays.
Mary Corbet's How To videos cover a wide range of embroidery stitches, many of which are used in needlepoint. You can find unusual stitches here.
Moore's Stitching's Top Ten Stitches List - Ten of the stitches Moore Stitching uses the most.
Instagram's Needlepoint Notebook account is stitched examples of stitches. Click on a picture and you'll find a reference to the book it was seen in. It's viewable only to those with an Instagram account and of course if you don't own the book, it doesn't help unless you are good at decoding stitches from photos.
Needlepoint Now Magazine's Stitch Videos
The Royal School of Needlework's Stitch Bank is a huge collection of embroidery stitches, but many of these are used in needlepoint. Some stitches have videos, some are stitch diagrams only.
Sharon B's Stitch Dictionary - another large collection of embroidery stitch diagrams.
Susan Robert's Needlepoint Teacher website has a very useful collection of stitches used in needlepoint.
Sheena's Sweet Stitches Diagrammed is a collection of the late Sheena James' stitch diagrams, created for her stitch guides and blog. Her family agreed to make these public after Sheena's untimely death in 2025. I am currently building out the blog and anticipate around 200 stitches when I post everything I've found or that Sheena sent me.
The Needlepointer's Stitching Tutorials & Stitch DIagram Library is another shop building a collection of useful stitch diagrams
Whimsical Stitch is Mary Legallet's website. You are probably familiar with her books (there are five volumes out now) but she also posts a stitch diagram weekly on her website and to Instagram and Facebook. This is her website. If you have an Instagram or Facebook account, she posts everything across all these sites.
