Compensation Help

Unless the only stitch you ever use is a tent stitch, eventually you will have a stitch that doesn't fit the shape you are stitching. That's when you have to compensate. But how do you to that? Not to worry, we have lots and lots of help.

If compensation drives you nuts and you need more help, you might be interested in Susan Robert's Compensation 101: The Art of Partial Stitches for Needlepoint. It's the only book that is all about compensation I know about. It is 45 pages long, so it's not a big book.

A Master Uses Negative Space

Gay Ann Rogers just posted photos on her website of one of her samplers (on Congress cloth I think) she designed some years ago. Look carefully at the close up of the cat and the rug it's resting on and compare them to the rest of the sampler.  The cat isn't completely stitched and the rug isn't solidly stitched, either.  That makes them look good next to the sparsely worked wallpaper behind the cat.

It's a good lesson for those of us who aren't thinking scale and density when we work.  The best results come when you pay attention to those.

Inspirations Magazine Profiles Ecclesiastical Needlepoint

Inspirations magazine posts an online newsletter each Friday. It's always full of beautiful pictures but once I managed to drag my eyes away from the new book on Betsy Morgan's etuis (due out in late October; I've seen her needlework in person and it is gorgeous!),  I discovered a reader note about 23 kneelers, designed by Benjamin Pollack, stitched for a church in Sydney, Australia.  The photos are wonderful!

Got Stitches Too? Size Matters (Book Review)

Needlepoint.com's blog has put up a nice book review of the latest book from Gone Stitching—Got Stitches Too? Size Matters.

It's not a very thick book but it has colorful diagrams that are easy to read (assuming you aren't color blind) and also includes stitched samples of each stitch.  I think the series is very well priced, too.

This is the third book from Gone Stitching.  Got Stitches:  Multi-Layered Stitches for Needlepoint was their first book and Holey Stitches!  A Guide to Judaic Themed Needlepoint Canvases was their second. All three are the same spiral bound size with heavy stock paper and clear diagrams. The two Got Stitches? books have colored diagrams and stitched samples.  Holey Stitches is much shorter (only 19 pages) with simpler diagrams and a lovely charted Hebrew alphabet and no stitched samples.  The stitches in Holey Stitches are for things like a Star of Dave, doves, domes, challah, mountains, buildings, wine cups, a Torah, etc.   It is more a specialty book but if you need a Hebrew alphabet or ideas for a piece for a Jewish friend, this is a great purchase.
