Sad News about Paternayan

A local Maine newspaper is reporting that Saco River Dye House (now Maine Textiles International) is in legal trouble due to their not being able to pay their rent.  They own Paternayan, so it looks like for now it will be unavailable.

Local stitchers in Maine say that they lost the lawsuit and that the company is in bankruptcy now.  A buyer is apparently in the wings.  Stay tuned.

An Interview with Morgan Julia Designs

The new Morgan Julia Designs website is live!  My favorite part so far (besides the fresh colors and style of the designs—love that elephant design on her Facebook page!—is the interview on her website (second link below).

Compensation Help

Unless the only stitch you ever use is a tent stitch, eventually you will have a stitch that doesn't fit the shape you are stitching. That's when you have to compensate. But how do you to that? Not to worry, we have lots and lots of help.

Ruth Schmuff has a lovely little trick to help you compensate an area.

Sandy Arthur has some good information at the bottom of this blog article in her Tips to Treasure section.

If compensation drives you nuts and you need more help, you might be interested in Susan Robert's Compensation 101: The Art of Partial Stitches for Needlepoint. It's the only book that is all about compensation I know about. It is 45 pages long, so it's not a big book.

I've not seen it but it's gotten rave reviews from purchasers on NP Nation. Please note this is a Kindle book, so you will have to buy it from Amazon and will need the Kindle app downloaded to read it.

A Master Uses Negative Space

Gay Ann Rogers just posted photos on her website of one of her samplers (on Congress cloth I think) she designed some years ago. Look carefully at the close up of the cat and the rug it's resting on and compare them to the rest of the sampler.  The cat isn't completely stitched and the rug isn't solidly stitched, either.  That makes them look good next to the sparsely worked wallpaper behind the cat.

It's a good lesson for those of us who aren't thinking scale and density when we work.  The best results come when you pay attention to those.

If you are curious about Gay Ann's thoughts on stitching, check out her interview with Fiber Talk.
