Rugs are one of the classic uses for needlepoint. I know a rug is a huge commitment in time and materials, but these things are heirlooms that will last a very long time. Why not start with a smaller piece, like one of Jan Fitzpatrick's fabulous classic rug designs? She's currently working on a Chinese rug, but the chart for her Mosaic Rug, which is based on traditional Moroccan rug patterns, is now available (second link).

The Beth Russell kits are just wonderful! I've had "William Morris gold and brown wallpaper acanthus" piece on my list-to-do, in needlepainting. They/She has a kit of it in tent stitch. Ideal for a 'brainless' project :-) I'd love to do a heap of those projects. Yum!
The actual kits are wonderful quality, at least they used to be. I've had one for years that is on my To Do list for someday.
