New Stitch Monday's Mahjong Sign

Stephanie
Ridgewood Needlepoint's "New Stitch Monday" series is tackling a mahjong sign. First, Stephanie worked the background around the word and then beaded the letters. (This is a 13 count design, by the way.)
Now for the backgrounds behind the N, S. E and W.
The tile with two flowers is done. It's quite pretty. I like fly stitch for leaves.
Pink dragons are the cutest! And Stephanie's right--Baroque Silk is a great thread.
Now we move on to the green dragons.
The final design is the joker. Of course the different blocks repeat so she has to finish all of them before framing.

A Scarf for Your Snowman
As I type this, it is unusually cold in Chilly Hollow and has been for a week with another week when the highs don't get above 20 degrees and the lows are around 1 is anticipated. So I'm not at all surprised that Ridgewood is talking about knit and scarf stitches in their New Stitch Monday column. Kalem, knit and corduroy stitches plus variations are discussed.

New Stitch Monday Builds a Castle
Ridgewood Needlepoint has chosen a new canvas for 2026--Colors of Praise's "Castle MC502." There are three other versions of this castle which are not as detailed, all on 18 count. Here is MC516, which is 7 inches square. Love that garland!
MC507 is 6 inches square with some lovely greenery.
MC508 is a tiny piece at 3 1/4 inches by 5 inches, perfect for the miniature lover. This belongs inside an Easter egg, doesn't it?
Stephanie is working the 18 count version of MC502. Most shops stock the original 13 count but you can get the 18 count from Bedecked and Beadazzled, which also has a stitch guide.
Now let's watch Stephanie stitch!
The first step is picking threads and stitching the lake.
The next step is to work the grass around the lake and stitch the path.
Now Stephanie is creating mountains with an Airplane Stitch variation.
She continues the mountains with a Chevon stitch variation and gifts us two other chevon-type stitches that will make nice mountains, too.
Now the castle roofs have a stitch, which has many different names.
Stephenie tackles the sky, clouds and the blooming tree.
Next she works the urn and the wall in preparation for the ribbonwork that will go on top of these areas. Easier to do the background first in those instances.
The castle and all those towers are done. The greenery and flowers will be done in ribbons next.

Ridgewood Explores Brick Stitch for New Stitch Monday
Ridgewood Needlepoint is exploring brick stitch as part of their New Stitch Monday series.
Now Ridgewood looks at fancier variations on brick stitch.
Instructions for brick stitch beading are included. Be warned, though. Depending on the size of your canvas and beads, the beading thread and the underlying canvas may show. That can provide some interesting shading effects or contrasts if you experiment with colors a bit.
Brick stitch is quite versatile. You can add a bead to the stitch after your needle comes up from the back and it will settle in the middle hole. You can work brick stitch in vertical columns, which is particularly useful if you are doing the stitch on black or dark navy where it is hard to see where to put your needle. You can also work brick stitch over threads laid in the ditch between threads which gives a fun effect if you use two colors or add a metallic as the laid thread.

New Stitch Monday and the Susan Roberts Stockings
The new project for Ridgewood Needlepoint's New Stitch Monday is a Susan Roberts stocking called "Forest Friends" that Adrianne is stitching. There's a good Santa coat stitch and great fur stitch diagrammed here.
Next she worked on the leaves in the background.
The final section on the stitch was the background snow.
Now Adrianne starts work on the second Susan Roberts stocking--"Snowman." First up the snowman has a lovely sky.
There are two sets of trees to stitch next plus some ornaments.
Now the snowman's body and face are stitched and it has a hat and scarf.
Finally the snow is stitched and the second stocking complete.
The third Susan Roberts stocking Adrianne worked is "Lantern Walking," a classic Santa design with some nice clothing stitches.
I never would have thought to use Double Woven Variation for bushes but it works!
The snow stitch is interesting and turned out well.
Next is the sky.
Now the final touches. Lots of French knots!
We've started on a fourth Susan Roberts stocking. This posting is about the background sky and the moon.
The snow is done with a mixture of Stardust and Neon Rays Plus. Stardust is a mix of silk and wool with a bit of polyester sparkle. It's made by Brown Paper Packages.
This one has the reindeer, tree and garland all stitched. It's really charming.
And now for the sky behind Mr. Reindeer.
This stocking has mountains down below at the toe of the stocking. Here is the stitch for the first set of mountains.
And here is the stitch chosen for the second set of mountains.
The reindeer on this stocking is flying over snow and a lake, so we have stitches for both.
The last part on the reindeer stocking are the two big evergreens at the bottom.
The last section is Mr. Reindeer and his harness. And the reindeer stocking is done!

Stephanie Is Dancing with Stitches Each New Stitch Monday
Stephanie at Ridgewood Stitchery has started a new project, Ellen Skidmore's "Dance." This is a discontinued canvas from the Meredith Collection. Stephanie's first stitch is for the dress. She choose an open stitch but filled in the open spot as she's not a light coverage stitcher.
Next she tackles the background grass and found a nice stitch for it, topped with some grass sprigs.
Stephanie tackled a lot of small areas on the design--the skin of the dancer, the "piano keys" border of the skirt, and the dancing shoes.
The final section was the border.

Great All Purpose Stitches from Ridgewood
Ridgewood Needlepoint's New Stitch Monday has some all around great stitches (and variations) that they use over and over again. Today we're talking the Mosaic stitch family. These stitches are usually easy to compensate and are great for texture in backgrounds or for architectural elements.
The next batch of good all-purpose stitches are Cashmere stitches and variations.
The third batch of stitches are another personal favorite--Hungarian Stitch.
Parisian is very similar to Hungarian and equally lovely and versatile.
This combination darning/oblique cross stitches pattern is very pretty for backgrounds and large areas.
This week Ridgewood celebrates Valentine's Day with a slew of pretty heart backgrounds.
To celebrate Valentine's Day, Stephanie shows off the heart she stitched with an original stitch (diagram included) she calls "Valentine Day's Flowers." Very pretty!

Ridgewood Stitches Flowers (and Leaves) for New Stitch Monday
Stephanie of Ridgewood Needlepoint has posted articles in her New Stitch Monday column about stitching flower petals, complete with stitch diagrams and tips on how she used beads in the center of her sunflower.
Stephanie has switched to a design with flowers and leaves, so she also has leaf stitches for us.
Stephanie has listed quite a few simple leaf stitch diagrams in this posting.
It's back to the center of a sunflower this time.
And now the leaves next to the sunflower.
More leaves on this Laura Love design.
This time Stephanie is doing the maple leaf. As a special touch, she added Accentuate (a very thin metallic) to the overdyed silk from Thread Gatherers and says it looks great.
This week Stephanie tackles smaller leaves, using Thread Gatherer's Silk N Colors (which I agree is a terrific thread). If you want to experiment with Silk N Colors, visit the second link below.
The ferns are especially lovely but she does some nice small brown leaves, too.
Next is the sunflower and its leaves. The petals are in ribbon stitches. Search for Japanese ribbon stitch to see how to do the outer row. The inner row is just satin stitches in ribbon. Stephanie gives two options for the little leaves around the sunflower.
The final floral motif on this design are small yellow flowers, which get three different stitches and beads!
The last bit of this canvas is the background and the lettering.

Poppy Monk Needlepoint recommends a stitch they call Diamond Leaves for leaves and tree trunks. Since we are talking leaves and flower petals, I thought I'd put that here as well.
Stephanie is working on a traditional Tobacco Leaf design for her next project. Her yellow-green leaf is done in all Nobuko Stitch, which is very popular among needlepointers for large areas.
The navy leaf is a familiar stitch with some great tips for stitching it.
More leaves are done on the Tobacco Leaf design.
Adrienne is working on an Alice Peterson still life of tulips in a vase.
This step works the tablecloth, using Nobuko with Gloriana silk (which is a lovely lovely silk, by the way).
The tulips look great in interlocking Gobelin.
Adrienne is now working stems and leaves for the tulips.
I'm not sure what lines are being stitched--maybe the rows on the vase?
The Alice Peterson tulips still life is done!
The next floral (stitched by Stephanie) is Raymond Crawford's "Pumpkin Floral." Here you see it stitched and framed.
Stephanie found the perfect background stitch in The Pointer Sisters' We Have Your Back Ground Stitches.
Then she tackled the pumpkin.
Finally, the acorns were done in various stitches, then an oak leaf finished the piece.
The maple leaf stitch is a favorite of Stephanie's.

Ridgewood Needlepoint's blog shows off four cute snowmen in wooly hats from Patti Paints. They also suggest four stitches for the snowy bodies and the kalem stitch for the hats.
Enlarge the page to see the stitch diagrams better. I would be tempted to add tiny crystal beads in the empty spaces between the Upright Stitch crosses to give the snowman more icy sparkle.

Dimensional Dog with Stitch Diagrams

Stephanie at Ridgewood Needlepoint is stitching one of the Sew Much Fun dimensional stuffed animals as part of their New Stitch Monday series. These designs come with stitch guides but Stephanie is using her own stitches. In this first entry from Ridgewood about this piece, she explains Scotch and Cashmere variation and includes a diagram.
Stephanie did more Scotch stitch combos for her dog.
The next two sections have stripes, one Stephanie made up when she miscounted the section. It looks fabulous, proving that mistakes are when we get really creative.
The back of the first leg has a very pretty Hungarian variation.
More of the first leg, this time a Milanese variation.
The last of the first leg, using a Parisian stitch which is one of my favorites.
Now the second leg is started.
More on leg number two.
I think we are working one of the two front legs now.
The front leg with lots of stripes was apparently a lot of fun.
The second front leg is cute.
This is the last of the front leg stitching.
The ears, head and gussets are the last things to be stitched.
