Last month I wrote an article listing books that are particularly useful for those doing canvas embellishment. You can find it on my Chilly Hollow Stitch Guides blog.

If you know of other books that are really helpful when you are trying to find a stitch for an effect on your painted canvas, please let me know.

I agree with all of your book recommendations and I would add 3 books by Brenda Hart: Favorite Stitches, Favorite Stitches Book II, and Stitches for the Millennium. The stitches range from simple to complex. The diagrams are large and very easy to follow. Brenda also adds suggestions for fibers and how to use the stitches. My stitching would be far more mundane without Brenda's help.
Thanks, StitchWiz! I use Brenda's books all the time. I'm not sure they are good for a beginner, but they sure do come in useful when I am embellishing a canvas. I'll add a note to the article.
