The Wool and the Floss has a new tool in their Tools of the Trade line of products; the Thread Calculator. How this works is you lay the transparent grid over your painted canvas and count how many squares you have of the color of thread you need to buy.
On average, needlepointers doing basketweave use 1.75 yard of thread to cover one square inch. The grid squares are one square inch. Lay the grid over your design and count the squares in red, then multiple that by 1.75 yards (or 2 if you want a simpler math problem that gives you a little extra in case you have to rip out). Now look at the label on the type of thread you want to buy and see how many yards on that skein. If your gird count is 10 red squares (which means 20 yards of thread is necessary) and your skein of Silk Lame Braid has 10 yards on a card, buy two cards.
