Shops call them put ups, those twisted loops of thread that make up skeins of brands like perle cotton. They can be a real pain to open up and use but Mary Corbet has some tips on how to handle them without too much trouble.
I'll caution you that for some projects you need very long lengths of thread. Think couching, darning backgrounds, types of needle weaving. If all your threads are cut into pieces, you can't do those stitches. Because of that I only cut a skein when I absolutely must, but Mary's way certainly is a good way to cope with these maddening skeins. Just think before you cut, that's all.
