Note that this is just a guide and most useful if you are using a tent stitch.  How many plies you use depends on the stitch and the effect you want more than anything else.

KC Needlepoint Explains Metallic Threads

I just stumbled across this article on KC Needlepoint's website that talks about the various metallic threads available today.  The shop talks about eight different brands of metallic and semi-metallic threads (i.e., threads that have a base thread mixed with a synthetic metallic) with stitched examples so you can get an idea of what they look like.

Posey Parker's Guide To Getting into Needlepoint

Remember, it is only a guide.  The thickness of the thread and the stitch you are creating also effect what size needle you need.
