Food For Thought When Transferring a Design

Rachel does a lot of embroidery that involves getting the design outline onto linen and fabrics.  She's written an interesting article on the various ways she's accomplished this with an emphasis on their pluses and minuses.  I've used the "light box" method she describes successfully on needlepoint canvas and I also baste lines on canvas occasionally, especially when I want to mark out background areas or borders.   I don't use a marking pen much as they are so inconsistent depending on the weather.  I've had marks never disappear and had them disappear overnight.

All these things come into play when you are trying to transfer a design but remember, whichever way you decide to work, patience is your friend.  None of these techniques are fast.

Frixon Magic Pens

Trish Burr has found a pen that is erased by heat.  It's the Frixon Magic pen by Pilot, manufactured in Japan.

I would proceed with caution but these might be just what you are looking for if you transfer a lot of patterns to canvas and linen.  But beware, put your piece in the freezer and the lines reappear!

How many of us put our work in the freezer if we aren't trying to get creases out of linen by dampening it and freezing it briefly?

Iron On Transfer Pens

According to the Needlework Retailer, Sulky now has iron on transfer pens which you can use to draw a design, then iron it onto needlepoint canvas. Interesting!
