Wasted

Are you familiar with waste canvas? This is a loosely woven canvas that you lay on top of fabric, stitch through both layers, then wet the fabric and waste canvas. Water makes the waste canvas easy to pull out from between the fabric and the stitching, one thread at a time.  This leaves your stitching in place on top of fabric like baseball caps, tote bags or t-shirts.  DMC sells waste canvas and has posted a video about how to use it on their blog.

I used waste canvas a lot when I was cross-stitching cute motifs on my daughters' baby clothes. Pulling out the waste canvas threads got a little difficult sometimes when I didn't wet the canvas enough. As it got drier, the starch got stickier. However, I love using it. Currently, I'm adding beads to my daughter's sweater to refresh it for her, and the waste canvas helps with the bead alignment.
