Choosing a Replacement for Medici UPDATED

A lot of folks are trying to find a good replacement for Medici wool, DMC's thin embroidery wool that was discontinued a year or so back.  If you are one of that number, this article from a reproduction stitcher is a must read.  The author documents how she test stitched a variety of threads to find one that would work as well as Medici when restitching The Bayeux Tapestry.

UPDATE:  Please read the Comments as several folks have replacements and there is even a source for the original Medici straight from France.

Hi Jane - I actually have been able to get Medici directly from France. It is more costly than it used to be, slow delivery, and a bit of a pain with the fluctuating exchange rate and expensive shipping - but it can be done. If anyone is interested they can contact me at phxneedlepoint@yahoo.com .

Leigh, I've never heard of Fine d"Aubusson! Have you used it? Can you do a brief review? I found this about it from Mary Corbet.

I've heard from Carole that Thread Needle Street has a replacement Medici thread but Carole's not used it.

Anyone else have something to add? Sorry, you will have to copy/paste the links as I can't make them clickable in Comments.
