Bayeux Stitch, by Tanya Bentham

This must be book week as I have another book to draw your attention to-Bayeux Stitch by Tanya Bentham.  Bayeux stitch is what is usedin the Bayeux Tapestry and other Medieval embroideries.  Tanya's an expert on this historical stitching.

Not familiar with the Bayeux Tapestry?  In short, it is the story of William the Conquerer's little jaunt to England in 1066 done in embroidery using the couched and laid stitch we now call Bayeux stitch.

A Historian Discusses the Bayeux Tapestry

Mary Corbet turned up an interesting question and answer session about the creation of the Bayeux Tapestry on the BBC historic magazine website.  The person interviewed is an embroider and has a Ph.D. on Medieval embroidery to boot.
https://www.needlenthread.com/2018/10/weekend-reading-the-making-of-the-bayeux-tapestry.html

Here's the direct link to the discussion, but what Mary says above is quite interesting, too.  Those who want more information should follow the links scattered around the page on the BBC History Magazine site.

Embroideries That Record History

The blog for the Embroiders Association of Canada has a very interesting short introduction to Ann Bernard's blog, which talks in detail about various embroideries that record and explain history.
http://blog.eac.ca/2018/02/embroideries-that-record-history.html

A great many folks who visit Blog are interested in the Bayeux Tapestry, and Ann deals with it in detail here.    Remember, this is a blog, so the entries are latest on top.  This is the first.  You'll have to follow along to understand Ann's points about the embroidery and the history it illustrates, so scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and click on Next Post to read the entries in the order they unfolded.  Please note that Ann talks about other historical embroideries as she tells the story of what happened in England in the pivotal year 1066.

The Star Wars Tapestry

I thought Star Wars fans would like a good look at this cross stitch version done in the style of the Bayeux Tapestry.  No matter what your passion, you can certainly stitch it somewhere somehow.  In a galaxy far, far away....

Many thanks to the folks who posted about this on Facebook.

The Gordon Highlanders Great War Tapestry

Fans of modern needlework that celebrates the history of various regions who have a Facebook account will want to keep an eye on The Gordon Highlanders Great War Tapestry page.  The page is about the stitching of a new design by Andrew Crummy (designer of The Great Tapestry of Scotland) that features the Gordon Highlanders in World War I.  Mr. Crummy's designed three panels (shown above although I don't have the full image of the stag and crown) which will be stitched with 2 ply crewel wool on what appears to be linen.  It's going to be fun to watch the progress.

The Invasions in Needle and Thread

This article briefly describes the history behind the Bayeux Tapestry and the Overlord Embroidery, both chronicling invasions.  Don't miss the small photographs that illustrate the article as they give a flavor of the designs and their embroidery.

The Bonny Prince and His Tapestry

Since we've been watching Kathy's study of the Bayeux Tapestry and her stitching of one section, I thought you would like to see an amazing modern piece that tells part of the story of Bonny Prince Charlie's 1745 campaign.  This huge tapestry is known as the Prestonpans Tapestry.
http://needleprint.blogspot.com/2013/08/prestonpans-tapestry-worlds-longest.html

If you are not a Scot, you may never have heard the romantic tale of Prince Charles Edward Stuart and his quest to conquer England.  It's a tale worthy of several tapestries!

Restitching the Bayeux Tapestry UPDATED

Kathy has done a series of articles on copies stitched of the Bayeux Tapestry as she plans to stitch a version herself (third link).  The work and dedication of the stitchers is as amazing as the end result.

Thanks to Donna, I know that Kathy's not the only one working on a replica of the original Tapestry.  So is Andy!

By the way, The French Needle sells a Bayeux Tapestry needlepoint kit.  It is huge and expensive and printed, not hand painted, but if you are a fan and don't want to make up your own....

Tanya has also been bitten by the Bayeux bug.
http://opusanglicanum.wordpress.com/2013/08/20/bayeux-tapestryzzzzzzzzz/

Here is another person stitching a section from the Wilson book on the tapestry.  She used DMC cotton floss instead of wool and has a marvelous transfer technique for the design.
http://www.theunbrokenthread.com/blog/2013/11/22/bayeux-tapestry-encore/

Kathy's also found a wonderful local shop (local to Bayeux, France, that is) called Bayeux Broderie that sells kits, linen and will hand draw the section of the Tapestry you want to stitch for you.
http://www.theunbrokenthread.com/blog/2013/08/06/bayeux-broderie/

The Quaker Tapestry is described as using "bits of Bayeux."  If you love tapestries you will enjoy the video in this article about it.

Bayeux Tapestry Reborn in Ireland

Most embroiderers have heard of the Bayeux Tapestry, the wool on linen emboidered story of the Battle of Hastings that earned William the Conquerer England as a prize.  Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, an Irish group from the eastern coast has created a modern version of their own history in crewel.

Adding to the Story

A group of folks on Alderney Island have decided to add the missing ending to the Bayeux Tapestry by stitching the coronation of William the Conquerer in a reproduction style.   There is a link to the website for the project as well as a BBC video of it being worked.  Enjoy!

Choosing a Replacement for Medici UPDATED

A lot of folks are trying to find a good replacement for Medici wool, DMC's thin embroidery wool that was discontinued a year or so back.  If you are one of that number, this article from a reproduction stitcher is a must read.  The author documents how she test stitched a variety of threads to find one that would work as well as Medici when restitching The Bayeux Tapestry.
http://www.housemarshall.org/Documentations/Now%20What%20Do%20We%20Do%20for%20Web.pdf

UPDATE:  Please read the Comments as several folks have replacements and there is even a source for the original Medici straight from France.
