Or Nue is basically couching gold metallic thread on the surface of canvas (or fabric) using colored silks to create a pattern against the gold background. Nimble Needle just took a class from Brenda Kocher on the technique and has posted plenty of photos and a link to Jane Zimmerman's interesting online article about the technique.

Before someone is disappointed, my book has an Or Nue type center with pattern couching borders. There are two complete designs in the book. The Celtic Knot piece is stitched on Congress Cloth using tradition gold and silk threads. The Shamrock piece is stitched on 18 count canvas and uses other types of threads to complete the design (Ribbon type threads couched with plied threads)
