More about Art versus Craft

To add to yesterday's discussion of art versus craft, please read what Rosalyn has to say about Anna Marie Salehar's work at the top of Stitchamaze's Stitch Talk Column.  I agree that art is all about emotion and when I see how stitchers choose painted canvases to collaborate with the designer on, I know they pick pieces that resonate with their own emotions and lives.  That really is art, isn't it?

Come to Think About It...

...why aren't more of those stunning pieces we are stitching collected?
http://lovingstitches.typepad.com/a-needlepoint-journal-abo/2013/07/a-legacy-of-candid-hope.html

All I can say is that we need to document our work so that in 200 years when art collectors discover needlepoint of the late 20th-early 21st Century, they have some idea of who we were and what motivated us.  We are truly under the radar now, blogs, magazines, national seminars and all.  No one notices us and our handwork.

Not yet, anyway.  But someday....

P.S.  Many thanks to Liz who found Mr. Wileman's art and alerted me.

In Need of Inspiration?

Are you in need of Inspiration? Then run--don't walk!--to the Stitchamaze website and sign up for the e-newsletter. Perhaps inspired by the writing she is doing for Needlepoint Now magazine, Rosalyn Cherry-Soliel is sending out a newsletter packed with links, information and photos of her current projects, and planning to release a DVD about her work next summer. Whether you plan to tackle canvas collage or not, you will love reading about her art needlepoint.

If your inspiration needs different food, how about reading Mary Corbet's review of Embroidered Flora and Fauna?

Are you a threadaholic or bitten by the History Bug? Then you will want to seek out the Spring 2009 issue of Sampler and Antique Quarterly.

Finally, if you just need eye candy in your life, try searching Flickr. Type in flowers or Siamese cats or landscapes or toys or anything else that catches your fancy and explore the photographs folks have published publicly on that topic. I am using Flickr for inspiration for the flowers that will cover Holi's halo eventually.

Is It Time for Spring Cleaning and No One Told Me? UPDATED

The totally fabulous Stitchamaze website has a new look. If you like charted geometric pieces, don't miss Lorene Salt's work in the Guest Gallery. Her original designs will blow your socks off!

On October 8 Kelly Clark's new website will be up. This is next Wednesday-mark your calendars! Don't worry if the link below stops working for a bit. The old website will have to come down and the new one be uploaded first.

Rishfeld Designs has updated their website with many more photos of their expanding line of canvases.

Finally, CBK Needlepoint Collection's site isn't brand new, but it's new to me.

Congratulations on the websites to all. But I'm beginning to think this is spring instead of October!

UPDATE: Orna Willis is also planning to revamp her website. It really is spring cleaning time!

"While I Sit and Ponder"

Once again Rosalyn Cherry-Soleil has updated her website newsletter with photos of her current projects, wonderful links to explore (don't miss the Japanese embroidery and beadwork at Blue Bonnet Studio!), and a guest gallery featuring even more of the terrific stitching of Daphne Goodyear whom you met here on my blog when I showcased her fabulous Wild Women canvases. Got several hours? Then what are you waiting for?! Explore!

The lovely photo shows part of a Melissa Shirley canvas adaptation of one of Linda Carter Holman's paintings. Rosalyn has just started this piece. I can't wait to see more!

Brenda Is A Purple Tulip UPDATED

If you don't read the blogs that NP designers and shop owners have, you are missing out on some great information and inspiration.

How about Ruth Schmuff's idea to have a Sandra Gilmore floral design painted based on some of Ruth's friends and colleagues? Brenda Hart is represented by a purple tulip! To see the canvas and read about other "flowers" look for the 4/5/08 entry here.

Speaking of inspiration, check out what Rosalyn Cherry-Soleil has to say to her Flight of Fancy cyberclass students and to us about stitching.

The photo above is from a Leigh Designs canvas of three Japanese masks. Rosalyn is stitching this, with progress photos on her website. Check this one out and also several other large pieces she has underway here.

Finally, watch Laura Perin design a new sampler on her website. I love the small, smaller, large and largest primrose patterns!
UPDATE: Laura has added a second design in a spring and autumn version on her blog. It's fascianting to see how she changes a rose to a grape, a willow leaf to a grape leaf, tosses in beads and changes colors and Poof! You have something totally different.

Inspiration is all over the Internet if you know where to look.
