Four Jean Hilton Books Reviewed

Melita talks briefly about four Jean Hilton books she owns in her latest blog posting.

I don't think stitchers today realize the impact Jean Hilton had when she first started designing with "string art" type stitches.  None of us had ever seen anything like this!

I will warn you these are all older books (the latest was published in 1995) and the diagramming isn't as good as books today because when they were published,  the software wasn't available.  But these are amazing books, all the same.  Jean Hilton had an astoundingly creative mind.

If you are interested, I found several places online that carry Jean's books.  They are listed in the order I found them.  The last link is to the shop that owns Jean's copyright where you can also pick up her charts.

The Pat Mazu Mini Sock

Brenda's been working on a Pat Mazu charted mini sock.  The basis of the design is a Florentine pattern.  Brenda choose colors that made her think Mardi Gras.  (Pat's original is at the bottom of the posting.)

If you are tempted to try one of these, Pat's little stocking designs are often in Needlepoint Now and Needlepointers.  ANG has posted one online.

You can also pick up her charts here as well as her book about finishing your own needlepoint projects.

And of course Pat recently posted three free charts here on Blog.

Profiling Pat Mazu

This morning I wanted to share a profile of the counted canvaswork designer Pat Mazu I stumbled across when updating the Counted Canvaswork Designer tab.
http://www.bloombakecreate.com/2011/06/counted-canvas-with-pat/

You may have seen Pat's wonderful free designs in Needlepoint Now or Needle Pointers.
https://www.needlepointnow.com/project-information/project-index/

There is also a free project from Pat on the ANG website.

Pat's charts and her book on basic finishing are available from Stitches From The Heart.  I haven't seen the finishing book myself but it gets very good reviews.

I hope you enjoyed reading about this very talented lady and working some of her terrific stockings.

Three Variations of Pat Mazu UPDATED

Brenda's Cyperpointers chapter is working one of Pat Mazu's designs.  I know my counted canvaswork friends will want to see this.  Pat does wonderful things which she often shares in ANG's Needle Pointers magazine.  If you belong to ANG you should dig out some old issues with Pat's work in them.

UPDATE:  The link above have disappeared but thanks to Sara Leigh, you can see them here.  Thanks for the help, SL!

If you don't belong--And why not?  This is the premier needlepoint educational organization!--you can pick up Pat's charts through Stitches From the Heart in Indiana which specializes in counted canvaswork.  They even have Pat's finishing book.

Personally, I have trouble with counted canvaswork since I can't count reliably but Pat's pieces are not that difficult, even for me, and when you use stash threads, the results are unexpected and spectacular.  I highly recommend her designs.

A New Jean Hilton!

Oh boy oh boy! A new Jean Hilton chart is about to be released in August by Stitches from the Heart!
http://stitches-heart.com/jean-hiltons-a-la-mode/

Stitches in the Heart has the right to publish and distribute Jean's designs.  Most of Jean's work is available from any good needlepoint shop (see the tab labeled "Counted Canvaswork Shops" for sources of shops that stock lots of charts if you don't have a local source for them) but this particular design will be available for the next year from Stitches in the Heart only.

If you aren't familiar with the late Jean Hilton's designs or books, or you just want to add one of them to your collection, here is the place to browse.

Puzzle

As a treat for my stitching friends who love Jean Hilton's designs, here is a photo of Puzzle done in cheerful purples and greens.
http://stitches-heart.com/jean-hiltons-puzzle/

This is much different than Jean's original reddish hues and very different from the ecrus in Puzzle Purse but it is all very lovely.  By the way, I've seen Puzzle Purse stitched in the original colors and found it magnificent in person.

More Counted Fun

Today's a very good day for the counted needlepointers among us as Laura Perin has also released a brand new design.  She calls this Spring Bouquet Sampler. It's a mix of blackwork, embroidery and composite needlepoint stitches and is very pretty.    I bet it would be a smash hit in reds, oranges and corals....

Stitches From the Heart has a new Pat Mazu ornament series called "Chequered Chic" for her fans to enjoy.

AND they have re-released Jean Hilton's Light n Lacy design booklet, which is a series of small, intricate patterns which are showcased on the new cover.

It's a good day to be able to count!
