Jeannie's Windmills (Pat Mazu)

Melita worked Pat Mazu's 'Jeannie's Windmills" from ANG's chapter project book and had it made into a cute project book.

ANG's chapter project books are sent to chapter presidents for free to use as chapter projects, just another benefit from joining the American Needlepoint Guild (ANG).

The Pat Mazu Mini Sock

Brenda's been working on a Pat Mazu charted mini sock.  The basis of the design is a Florentine pattern.  Brenda choose colors that made her think Mardi Gras.  (Pat's original is at the bottom of the posting.)

If you are tempted to try one of these, Pat's little stocking designs are often in Needlepoint Now and Needlepointers.  ANG has posted one online.

You can also pick up her charts here as well as her book about finishing your own needlepoint projects.

And of course Pat recently posted three free charts here on Blog.

Finishing Mini Christmas Stockings UPDATED

Starke Art has a two part video on small stocking finishing which Brenda used for her little mini sock.  The links are below, but first, here's her finished stocking.

UPDATE:  Here's another little mini sock Brenda finished using the Starke Art tutorials.

Should I Prewash My Red Threads?

Recently someone on the ANG email list asked if they should pre-wash their red silk thread with cold water and vinegar to keep them from running.  Two finishers answered their question and very kindly agreed to repeat their advice here—

*******************************************

This is from Margi at Sandy's Finishing Touches:

Test all threads before stitching. Just cut a 6-12inch length off the skein of thread and swish in cool water. You will have color release if the thread is not color fast. If the thread bleeds I recommend flushing out the excess dye just to be sure before setting any threads with a vinegar rinse. If the thread does not bleed check for color transfer by blotting with a white cloth or paper towel. If you have color transfer I wouldn’t stitch on a project that would run the risk of coming in contact with any liquids. Just projects to be framed or ornaments.

As a finisher who has blocked hundreds of needlepoint items each year for over 30 years I have experienced a variety of threads that bleed. Red is not the number one color to bleed. Green and Burgundy threads are more problematic than red threads. Certain overdyed thread manufacturers jewel toned threads bleed the worst. I personally will not stitch with any overdyed threads without testing for color fastness first. I have had red thread run orange and brown thread run red. I even had a black thread run for the first time in 2017.  Silk threads are no more likely to bleed than other thread type so test all threads.

Pat Mazu, finisher and author of Finishing 101, added:

I really agree with that advice! I have often found that the deep colored metallics and the overdyed deep color metallics are often problems as well. Navy blue, burgundy, and forest green can be real problems in any thread (even embroidery floss/stranded cotton) or yarn. Some threads or yarns are also color fast to dry cleaning and not to water, as well.

Before beginning to stitch, think about the final purpose of your piece and test your threads/yarns if it is something that will be used and may eventually require cleaning, such as a pillow. Then, always use a frame and have clean hands when stitching. Those two steps will modify the need for cleaning and blocking the completed piece.

*******************************************

Thank you both very much for your help!  I've added links to Margi's company and Pat's book for those who are interested.

Profiling Pat Mazu

This morning I wanted to share a profile of the counted canvaswork designer Pat Mazu I stumbled across when updating the Counted Canvaswork Designer tab.
http://www.bloombakecreate.com/2011/06/counted-canvas-with-pat/

You may have seen Pat's wonderful free designs in Needlepoint Now or Needle Pointers.
https://www.needlepointnow.com/project-information/project-index/

There is also a free project from Pat on the ANG website.
http://www.needlepoint.org/NeedlePointers/13-11/Nov2013MazuStarMdowStockingNPExtra.pdf

Pat's charts and her book on basic finishing are available from Stitches From The Heart.  I haven't seen the finishing book myself but it gets very good reviews.

I hope you enjoyed reading about this very talented lady and working some of her terrific stockings.

Odds and Ends

Randi celebrated Mother's Day this year with a wonderful pillow she designed for her mom.

Jenny Henry celebrated with a DIY project to create a lavender sachet for Mom.

Melita has created bookends by combining two charts from Jean Hilton and Pat Mazu. Very clever!

Ridgewood shows off two collages--one for police and one for fire fighters.  Here in a very rural area we celebrate the volunteer rescue squad but these are perfect for more urban areas.  Sorry, I don't know the designer.

Web Extras for the Magazine

Arlene, who rarely misses anything, noticed that the American Needlepoint Guild (ANG) has posted quite a few "web extras" on their website. These are extra bits that add to ANG's magazine articles.  Sometimes there are finishing instructions, sometimes a free chart, sometimes there are interview tidbits.
http://www.needlepoint.org/magazine.php

It's very nice for ANG's members (who get Needle Pointers for free) and even useful for non-members who want to stitch that chart or try to finish something themselves.  Thanks, ANG!

Three Variations of Pat Mazu UPDATED

Brenda's Cyperpointers chapter is working one of Pat Mazu's designs.  I know my counted canvaswork friends will want to see this.  Pat does wonderful things which she often shares in ANG's Needle Pointers magazine.  If you belong to ANG you should dig out some old issues with Pat's work in them.
http://brendasneedlepointstudio.blogspot.com/2014/08/pinwheel-christmas-ornaments-8514.html

UPDATE:  The link above have disappeared but thanks to Sara Leigh, you can see them here.  Thanks for the help, SL!
http://brendasneedlepointstudio.blogspot.com/2014/08/pinwheel-christmas-ornaments-82114.html

If you don't belong--And why not?  This is the premier needlepoint educational organization!--you can pick up Pat's charts through Stitches From the Heart in Indiana which specializes in counted canvaswork.  They even have Pat's finishing book.
http://stitches-heart.com/needlepoint/pat-mazu-designs/

Personally, I have trouble with counted canvaswork since I can't count reliably but Pat's pieces are not that difficult, even for me, and when you use stash threads, the results are unexpected and spectacular.  I highly recommend her designs.

Pat Mazu for Christmas

The October 2013 newsletter for Needlepoint Now magazine is out and it features a free chart from Pat Mazu. Pat is famous for her small stocking and ornament designs, all of which use fancy stitches and open spaces to create something wonderful.   (Oh, there's a preview of the upcoming issue of the magazine, just in case you can't wait.)
http://www.needlepointnow.com/wp-content/uploads/NN_NWSLTR_Oct13.pdf

By coincidence, ANG has also published a free Pat Mazu design as part of their Needle Pointers magazine's Web Extra series, this time a little stocking called Star in the Meadow.  You can see the finished piece at the ANG website, and there is a link to the free chart on that page also.  (Note the cord and tassel making instructions on the same Web Extra page if you want to try out making your own trims, just to know how.)
http://www.needlepoint.org/magazine.php

If you need a little ornament for a friend for Christmas or want to add another needlepoint piece to your tree, spend a little time with Pat.  With the help of Needle Pointers and Needlepoint Now, you can have a Pat Mazu stocking and ornament set for Christmas morning.  And if you fall as much in love with Pat's work as I am, Stitches From the Heart sells her charts and her finishing book, too.

More Counted Fun

Today's a very good day for the counted needlepointers among us as Laura Perin has also released a brand new design.  She calls this Spring Bouquet Sampler. It's a mix of blackwork, embroidery and composite needlepoint stitches and is very pretty.    I bet it would be a smash hit in reds, oranges and corals....
http://two-handedstitcher.blogspot.com/2013/05/a-new-spring-bouquet.html

Stitches From the Heart has a new Pat Mazu ornament series called "Chequered Chic" for her fans to enjoy.
http://stitches-heart.com/pat-mazu-has-new-design/

AND they have re-released Jean Hilton's Light n Lacy design booklet, which is a series of small, intricate patterns which are showcased on the new cover.

New Pat Mazu Designs

Fans of counted canvaswork and subscribers to the needlepoint magazines have seen lots of Pat Mazu's wonderful little stocking designs. Occasionally Pat does something that isn't a stocking and they are terrific, too. I am thrilled to see that Stitches from the Heart has new charts of her work available.
http://stitches-heart.com/4-new-pat-mazu-designs/

The stars at the top of Kim's Stars I've just seen Tony Minieri use in a fabulous background.  The gold and white stockings are the most elegant little stockings imaginable, while the Spindrift stocking is perfect for the ocean lover or sailor in your life.  I think the three little Glittering stocking patterns have been in Needle Pointers.  Great stuff, all four charts!  It is a good time to be a counted thread sort of needepointer, isn't it?

Pat has a finishing book available as well.  I've not seen it in person but friends say it is a great finishing book.

Let's Talk Finishing Books UPDATED

Marianne at New Needlepoint asked about finishing books at the Needlepoint Group on Facebook as she was considering whether to add Pat Mazu's finishing book to her online bookstore.   Apparently it was a good choice as she has been selling them like hotcakes!  Marianne stocks the classic Sandy Higgins finishing book as well as an out of print finishing book by Katharine Ireyss.
http://www.newneedlepoint.com/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=&keywords=finishing

UPDATE:   Michele at Bristly Thistle added in the Comments below that although Amazon.com stocks Sandy Higgins' Sandy's Finishing Touches:  A Step-by-Step Guide to Finishing Needlework, they have the 2008 edition.  Most needlework shops have the later 2010 edition.  Thanks, Michele!

I have used Summer Louise's finishing tips which makes me think her books would be very helpful.
http://chillyhollownp.blogspot.com/2012_10_09_archive.html

I've also used The Needlepoint Doctor for finishing ideas for odder items.  This is an out of print book so you'll have to use Marianne or other used book sellers to find it.
http://www.newneedlepoint.com/content-product_info/product_id-2435/the_needlework_doctor_by_mary_kay_davis.html

Pat's book can also be found at Stitches from the Heart who also sell her charts.  Sandy's Finishing Touches from Mrs. Higgins used to be available from her website which is gone but you can find it a lot of places now, from Nordic Needle to Marianne's shop to Amazon.com.
http://stitches-heart.com/needlepoint/pat-mazu-designs/

Anyone know of any other good finishing books, either out of print or new?

The Newest Thing

Designers are posting new things online again in a sort of preview of what's going to be available this summer. Let's start with EyeCandy's fabulous new pirate mermaid.  Doesn't that look like a fun stitch?!  Don't forget to scroll down and see the wonderful scissor fobs.  I can't decide whether I "need" a cat or a starfish one but those pastel owls are pretty durn wonderful, too.  What is your favorite?
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2012/04/spring-and-summer-preview.html

There's a cowgirl witch as well.
http://eyecandyneedleart.blogspot.com/2012/04/couple-of-characters.html

For the counted canvaswork enthusiast, Orna Willis has come up with a new colorways for her classic Midnight Garden piece.  I love the original but a black background isn't the easiest thing to stitch, so Midday Garden will suit those who prefer not going blind when stitching.  The new Contemporary Tartan piece is going to be a classic, in my opinion, while the Beader's Toolboxes are a fun treat for oneself or a friend.
http://ornadesign.blogspot.com/2012/04/new-colorways.html

Vicky's got a new Snap Tray.  The variety of these fabric trays that unsnap at the corners to lie flat for travel amaze me but really they are a fun organization touch for your stitching.
http://mostlyneedlepoint.com/04/21/green-your-world/

Pat Mazu has a new charted series out--Snacking. It's perfect for Halloween decorations.
http://stitches-heart.com/pat-mazus-new-snacking-candy-corns/

Pat does wonderful mini stockings. You can see more of her designs, plus her finishing book, at the Stitches from the Heart website.
http://stitches-heart.com/needlepoint/pat-mazu-designs/

Painted Pony Designs has new travel ornaments for the adventuresome stitcher.
http://www.paintedponyneedlepoint.com/2012%20Ornaments.htm

They've also put all of their popular "dress forms" canvases up on their website.
http://www.paintedponyneedlepoint.com/DressForms.htm

Finally Sandy Grossman-Morris has posted a few of her new designs on her site.  Scottish ghosts?  How wonderful!  If you find these charming, too, there are links to her website and to her shop if you don't have a local shop to order for you.

Finishing (with Hardware)

I got a note yesterday asking a finishing question I couldn't answer so I turned to the professionals.  Pat Mazu answered my question and during our conversation, I visited the website that sells Pat's finishing book and her mini stocking designs.  It's worth taking time to see the slide show of Pat's stockings and marvel how she uses simple stitches and an overdyed thread to great effect.  Who said simple wasn't gorgeous?! If you are a member of the American Needlepoint Guild, check your old issues of Needle Pointers magazine for free mni sock charts from Pat.  You won't be sorry.
http://stitches-heart.com/needlepoint/pat-mazu-designs/

Also in pursuit of answers for my correspondent, I was at Cheryl Schaeffer's website.  On her New for 2011 page, there are some cute mini socks and some stunning Halloween bell pull hardware that in combination with Cheryl's designs, brings the traditional bell pull into the 21st Century.
