Ridgewood Explores Brick Stitch for New Stitch Monday

Ridgewood Needlepoint is exploring brick stitch as part of their New Stitch Monday series.

Now Ridgewood looks at fancier variations on brick stitch.

Instructions for brick stitch beading are included.  Be warned, though.  Depending on the size of your canvas and beads, the beading thread and the underlying canvas may show.  That can provide some interesting shading effects or contrasts if you experiment with colors a bit.

Brick stitch is quite versatile.  You can add a bead to the stitch after your needle comes up from the back and it will settle in the middle hole.  You can work brick stitch in vertical columns, which is particularly useful if you are doing the stitch on black or dark navy where it is hard to see where to put your needle.  You can also work brick stitch over threads laid in the ditch between threads which gives a fun effect if you use two colors or add a metallic as the laid thread.

Needlepoint Clubhouse Demonstrates Various Styles of Beading

Needlepoint Clubhouse demonstrates various styles of beading in this video on their Instagram account.

Don Lynch's basketweave beading will alternate the way the beads point.  Here's a diagram.  Note that to do a solid area in basketweave beading, work the rows up and down on the diagonal as if you are working regular basketweave.  You'll get the best results if you use size 14 or 15 beads that are faceted instead of round like a ball bearing.

Ruth's Beading Videos

Ruth Schmuff has created two new short videos on beading techniques for her current myster class--and she's made them public for the rest of us!  The first video is on beading straight rows.  Ruth calls this row beading.  She explains in detail what she does and gives you tips to successfully attach the beads.

The second video covers how to do brick stitch beading, which is just brick stitches with a bead added.

In both techniques, keeping tension on your beads is crucial.  Thanks for the tips, Ruth!
