Neck Hung Light/Magnifiers

Recently somone asked for recommenations for light/magnifiers that you wear around your neck. Someone suggested this light/magnifer from Toolhelper.  It appears to be lightweight, has 24 LED lighs, is easy to adjust and comes with a charger.  It is available in black or white and the lights are dimmable.  It's inexpensive, but it looks like the lens is acrylic which means it may scratch easily.  There is a video showing how to assemble the light/magnifier if you are interested.

A much more expensive option are CraftOptics glasses.  This is a pair of glasses that are made to match your prescription (or the magnification you prefer) with a magnifer you swing into position (or out of the way) and have a built in light.

Evaluating Four Travel Lights

Island House Needlepoint tested four portable lights (two necklace lights and two head lamps) for stitching while traveling.  Joann focused only on rechargeable lights so she wouldn't have to mess with carrying batteries.

a)        Lumos & Lumos knitting (neck) lamp

b)        Glocusent Original Neck Reading Light

c)        Petzl ARTIC CORE Headlamp

d)        Petzl BINDI Ultra-light Headlamp

Although the Petzl BINDI Ultra-light Headlamp was Joann's favorite, read the article to see the pros and cons of each tool to see which will work best for you.  Note that the Bindi headlamp comes in various colors but the pricing is roughly $49 plus shipping everywhere.

KCN Introduces Neck Lights

KC Designers has introduced a new product, a neck hung light.  It is a flexible, bendable U shape with  lights on each end that are rechargeable through a charging cord, probably to a USB port in a computer (although the information doesn't say).  These have three color modes so you can use a brighter or les bright illumination, depending on where you are stitching.  Or reading your needlepoint magazine or books in bed.

Here's a link to the Kansas City needlepoint website to buy one of these. I doubt the bulbs are replaceable when they burn out but at $18, you can probably just buy a new one.

Other brands are available that are similar.  Needlepoint Clubhouse carries an LED model with two color modes that is $5 more expensive and uses three AAA batteries.
