Tips for Travel with Needlepoint & New Travel Projects

With summer vacation only a few weeks away, Coco Frank has posted some quick travel tips on their blog.

Speaking of travel, Princess and Me has something different when it comes to travel canvases--destination glasses case designs!  Note that all of their designs come with stitch guides.

The VSEAT Lightweight Travel Stand

Stitch-Stash is showing off the VSEAT light weight stand for travel.  Made in the UK, Stitch-Stash says it will hold stretcher bars that are up to 12 inches.  The accessory makes turning the screw tighter easier.  Note that this is a sit upon stand--in other words, you stick the base under one leg so your weight holds the stand steady and the frame is over your lap.

Stitching Road Trip Group on Facebook

A member of Needlepoint Nation just mentioned the Facebook group, Stitching Road Trip.

You have to join the group to access their information but all the shops have been verified by an actual needleworker.  Apparently they are not limited to shops in the USA, either, although I'm not sure how many needlepoint shops overseas are listed.

Hit the Road!

Now that winter is (mostly) over for those of us in the USA, KC Needlepoint is posting tips for taking your needlepoint with you on a trip.  There are links to buy the items they mention, of course, but the advice is good.

The Modern Needlework Stand: A Review

Mary Corbet has written a review of The Modern Needlework Stand, which is a table stand for your needlework, made by a Ukrainian company called Velke Potok, that's perfect for travel.   Mary's reviews are thorough.  She covers all the pros and cons of any item she reviews.

This stand isn't cheap at $360, so Mary wants to know if readers are interested in her stocking these and if so, what colors folks would like.  So check it out and let Mary know if you are interested.  If you are, what color grabs you?  Her email is mary (at) needlenthread (dot) com.

Thanks!

Travel Essentials

The Wool and the Floss has a few travel essentials:  a snap tray. a magnet, a chatelaine with tools and a needle case, and of course a Lumos light and canvas.  (and you'll need a project bag to carry it all)

Here's more about the Lumos light which drapes over your neck to point light at whatever you are stitching.  As always, shop around.  The Lumos light pricing varies a bit and sometimes you can find a sale.

Evaluating Four Travel Lights

Island House Needlepoint tested four portable lights (two necklace lights and two head lamps) for stitching while traveling.  Joann focused only on rechargeable lights so she wouldn't have to mess with carrying batteries.

She looked at these:
a)        Lumos & Lumos knitting (neck) lamp
b)        Glocusent Original Neck Reading Light
c)        Petzl ARTIC CORE Headlamp
d)        Petzl BINDI Ultra-light Headlamp

Although the Petzl BINDI Ultra-light Headlamp was Joann's favorite, read the article to see the pros and cons of each tool to see which will work best for you.  Note that the Bindi headlamp comes in various colors but the pricing is roughly $49 plus shipping everywhere.

Needlepoint: The Hot Travel Souvenir

Thanks to Beth, I found this Garden & Gun article about needlepoint being the hot travel souvenir of 2024!

So you MUST buy that cute canvas you find during your next trip.  It's the In thing to do and we are fashion forward here in the World of Needlepoint.

Travel Tips for Needlepointers

KC Needlepoint has several good tips for traveling with your needlepoint.

My best advice is to put a little package of needles in your wallet or purse.  It's very easy to loose the needle from your current project and can be impossible to find needles in the stores when you travel.

The 2023 Needle Travel Mania Guide

The 2023 edition of the Needle Travel Mania Guide is out!  It's inexpensive but packed full of information about craft shops.  If you travel a lot, you'll want to pick up a copy.

You can also look for a shop online at their website if you are making a trip to one area or have online access in your RV.

I'd advise travelers to call a shop before visiting in case they have closed due to a family emergency or illness or the Travel Mania Guide has something wrong.

A New Brand of Clip On Lights

Janis really likes this cheap clip on light.

There appear to be a variety of sizes of this, but this seems to be the closest to what Janis has.

Folding Twig Scissors for Travel

Just stumbled across these Japanese folding scissors.  They appear to be around five+ inches long, so they are bigger than most embroidery scissors.

They are called Plus Pen Style Twiggy Scissors.  They fold into the pen shape and are locked when you put the cap on.  They are plastic and I suspect not that durable but they are a great pair of scissors to toss into your stitching bag for travel.  Note that I don't know how airport security would look at these, but they aren't very expensive if they are confiscated.

Light Magnifers from Daylight for Travel

A member of Needlepoint Nation mentioned the Daylight Halo light-magnifiers as perfect for travel as they fold flat.  There are two versions:  one with a cord (often not allowed at seminars and classrooms these days) and one that is rechargable through a USB connection.  Both the Halo Go (rechargeable) and the Halo 5D have a 5 diopter magnifier.  Note that both versions sit on a table.  They don't clamp to your stretcher bars or floor frame.

Best Travel Tools

Needlepoint for Fun's latest newsletter talks about the best tools for traveling.  They have great ideas, including a style of project bag I've not seen before, but their best tip is to take an extra packet of needles.

In fact, put a packet of needles in your wallet or purse so you have them at all times.  Needles are easy to loose and very hard to replace on vacation.

Travel Tags Decoded

Hedgehog Needlepoint sells fun airport travel tags.  They look like this--

Ever wonder what the numbers and letters at the bottom mean?  You can download the free "Compendium" on the Hedgehog website to see what these mean.  (However, the newest aren't on the list yet and you have to give the website your contact information to get the PDF file emailed to you.)

Packing Needlepoint for Travel

The nice folks at Louise's Needlework are getting ready to go to the trade show, so this month's newsletter lists all the things they pack to travel with their needlepoint.

Note that the Ikea clamp on light they use doesn't seem to be available from Ikea any more although there are plenty available on eBay.  Ikea now sells a USB powered light they call the Jansjo without a clamp.

Want a Travel Stand?

Thinking about buying a travel stand?  Then you'll want to watch this video about the new System Four travel clamp.

It's small enough to travel with and will fit over almost every table and work with all the System Four frame clamps.
