Learning Stem and Outline Stitch: The Movie

Ruth Schmuff has posted two videos on YouTube to teach you to do stem and outline stitch.  The first video talks about outline stitch.  (By the way, the entire design this video shows is in the second link below.)

The second talks about changing direction on curvy lines.  (The entire design isn't finished yet but the second link below shows Ruth's current progress on this project.)

Ruth Explains Outline Stitch: The Video

Ruth Schmuff has finished the Fall 2019 mystery class, which is called "Witch Shoe Collage." (The design is from Bedecked and Beadazzled.)  It's a cute one but the main event is actually the video Ruth included to explain outline stitch with plenty of tips.  Don't miss that!

If you are curious about what Ruth did in this mystery class, all her class updates are collected here.

All About Outlines

Needlepoint doesn't use outlining stitches nearly as much as cross stitch does. Many cross stitch designs have back stitching as the final step to highlight design elements.   Since I am not that familiar with the technique and have some outlining to do on my current Top Secret project, I was thrilled to find Trish Burr's article on outlines on her blog.  Read it to find out how and why she outlines.

A Preview of Needlepoint Now Plus More

Needlepoint Now has published their preview of the latest issue online so that those considering subscribing can see a bit about what the magazine is about. The article also has extra information about the articles chosen, introduces new staffers, and of course has Sandy Arthur explaining the difference between stem and outline stitch, just in case Kathy's explanation didn't really stick with you.   All these goodies are at this link.

Is it Stem Stitch or Outline Stitch? UPDATED

I use stem stitch a lot but I am never sure when what I call stem stitch is actually outline stitch. If you are as confused as I am about the difference between the two stitches, you'll want to bookmark this terrific article by Kathy Andrews that clearly explains the different between the two stitches and also talks about S and Z twist threads.   Thanks, Kathy!  This is great!

UPDATE:  By coincidence Sandy Arthur also explains the difference in these two stitches for the July 2013 preview of Needlepoint Now magazine.
