Breaking News: Kreinik Cards Versus Kreinik Spools

Kreinik says that Kreinik metallic wound on Rainbow Gallery cards is quicker to get, so ask your shop to order Kreinik Cards from Rainbow Gallery or Wichert Imports.  If you prefer spools, ask your local shop to order Kreinik Spools from Fleur de Paris.

Is This A Problem?

Elizabeth over at Needlepoint Nation posted photos of her new spools of Kreinik, some of which look odd to her.

It's not a problem.  It could be the thread was a bit off center when put on the spool or it could be that Kreinik's transition to using only the large size spool means some of the various sizes of threads don't quite cover the large spool any more.  For example, spools of number 4 braid have 11 meters on the spool, while number 8, 12 and 16 braid have 10 meters.  If you buy 24 braid, you get 5 meters.  You can see using one size spool for all threads means some spools aren't completely covered by the thread.

This greatly helps when buying spools, though.  Kreinik has been having problems buying all the different sizes they used to put their threads on.

Reading the Label (Kreinik)

Kreinik posted a very useful article on how to read their spool labels.  I am always forgetting what the letters after the numbers mean so I plan to bookmark this.  Thanks, Kreinik!

Peels (Thread Spool Wraps)

I happened across an ad on Facebook for Smartneedle.com's Peels, which are a spool wrap system.   The company's website has a little video of Peels in action.  The Guterman thread spools in the video are the same size as the spools used for Trebizond, Accentuate, and other similar threads.  I have not been able to find any reviews on this new item, though.

Let's Recycle

Pop top spools sit in a little pile on my stash cabinets, waiting to be reused to corral a thread that needs to be kept secure. Most of mine originally held Kreinik's metallics but Mary Corbet reminds me that several brands use this type of spool and all come in handy after their original threads are gone.

Pop Top Thread

Kreinik has posted a video on line about how to pop the top of a Kreinik spool to remove the thread.

It took me ages to figure out how to get the thread off a Kreinik spool.  Hopefully this video will help the ignorant like me solve the puzzle of the pop top thread spool.

How to Read the Kreinik Labels

The Kreinik blog just posted a great little article on how to read the labels on their spools of metallic threads.

By the way, I didn't realize that Kreinik uses "pop top" spools.  Pull up on the top section of one cap by sliding your fingernail along the seam and you can easily unroll the loose end of the thread.  Push down on the cap to lock the thread into place between the two sections of the end cap.  This is explained at the bottom of this page.  Silly me--I had to be told that this is how it works!
