Cases for Your Needlepoint Stockings

The Needle House in Houston, TX will stock Stocking Cases.  If you have a lot of precious needlepoint stockings, you'll want to see these!  They are made of vegan leather,  hold two stockings each, and are lined with velveteen.

Apparently Victoria Whitson is the distributor.  It is possible that the velveteen Stocking Valet can be purchased separately if you have more than a few stockings to store.  Ask your favorite shop to check on this for you.

Repurposing Cigarette Cases

Melita has a lovely mother-of-pearl cigarette case she is going to use as needle storage.

You can find lots of cigarette cases online.  Right now the fabric ones that held a cardboard packet of cigarettes and a book of matches are easily found.  Modern Art Nouveau enameled ones are lovely and not very expensive, either.  If you want antiques, especially silver, you'll pay more.

As always, shop around.  Prices vary a lot for these items.

Storing Rainbow Gallery Threads

Laurel found an Etsy seller who uses 3-D printing to create storage boxes for Rainbow Gallery threads.

The boxes are stackable but each only holds 10 cards.  The comments in the Facebook link above list alternatives for those who own quite a few Rainbow Gallery cards.

Bobbin Tower

The Wool and The Floss has a customer who loves to bead and organize who highly recommends Clover's Stack 'n Store Bobbin Tower for storing spools of colored beading thread.

Here is a slightly better photo.  The tower holds around 30 beading thread spools although I suspect it is intended for sewing machine bobbins.

Shop around.  Prices vary quite a bit and sometimes you can find different colors.

And for those who don't bead, here are the types of beading thread spools these are designed to hold.

New Smaller DMC Storage Chest

DMC has a new size of its iconic wooden floss storage chest.

Right now the new smaller chest is only available bundled with various DMC threads.  Looks like the larger chest is also bundled with threads.  Most needlepointers already have plenty of threads.  You can find older DMC storage boxes on Etsy and eBay, though.  Here's just the first one that came up in my search.

Most of the ones available in the auctions or Etsy have plastic inserts but that's probably better for long term storage of threads than wooden drawers.

Vintage Candy Tins Storage for Needle Minders

Do you have a great many magnets you use as needle minders?  Wheelhaus Needlepoint has a cute video of a vintage hinged metal box they use to corral their needle minders and other tools on their Instagram.

Where can you find metal candy boxes?  I think the best place to start looking is Etsy.  Search for "vintage candy hinged tin boxes" and see what you come up with.  (The best boxes I found were Blue Bird Harry Vincent confectionary tins from England.)

I found this charming Whitman's Candy tin box.

This English box is decorated with a reproduction of a French romantic artist.

Are you an Art Deco fan?  This box is round and doesn't have a hinged lid but I like it a lot.

Here's another vintage English tin candy container with a knobbed lid that is in good shape and very attractive.

This West German chest type box is decorated with angels on each end.

Have fun browsing!

A Tiny Wooden Storage Box

While writing yesterday's article about the great needlepoint shops in Houston, Texas, I discovered this lovely wood storage box.

The wooden lid slides open to reveal a nice cavity to store needles, small magnets, even a needle threader. I'm not sure of the size but the shop can tell you what will fit inside if this charms you.

A Very Clever Storage Idea for Needle Minders

Annie just posted photos to NP Nation of her clever storage idea for her magnetic needle minders--she got a wooden cigar box from the local cigar place, ordered a metal sheet the right size to fit in the bottom, glued it in position, and now she has a neat place to keep her magnets!  You can see photos on NP Nation.

It's a very smart idea and wins Annie this month's Smart Cookie Award!

Smart Cookie Award for April 2023

Karen H. just posted this fabulous stretcher bar storage idea on NP Nation.

She's added handles to a wooden crate, then cut plastic downspouts to the proper size and stuck them inside the crate.  Now all the 9 inch stretcher bars go into one downspout.  Note that the sizes are written on each stretcher, making it easy to sort them and find the matching length.  Karen's also put the mini bars in one downspout and the regular width ones in another, even though they are both the same length.

Genius! Karen's won the Smart Cookie Award this month for this clever idea.

Kreinik Storage Idea from the Nashville Needlepointer

The Nashville Needlepointer has a great idea for storing Kreinik spools--use Candy Cubes from Sugarfina.

Eat the candy first, guys.  LOL

P.S. Kreinik does sell storage boxes that are much, much larger.

This Kreinik storage tin appears to have been discontinued but you can still find them.

You can also buy foam liners for the Container Store's Bisley Drawer cabinets that are sized to hold Kreinik spools.

Who knew there were so many options?!

Recommended Storage for Rainbow Gallery Thread Cards

Michelle on NP Nation recommends using these business card holders from the Container Store to hold your Rainbow Galley thread cards.

Each box appears to hold roughly 45 cards on their sides, so the colors are easily visible through the plastic lid.  They also have holes in the sides for good ventilation.

How Ada Organizes

Ada Hayden of Eye Candy has tried various thread organization schemes over the years.  Here is what she does now.

How you organize is really personal.  I always store my threads by type as the first thing I think about is texture when I am making choices, but there's no one right way to do this.  You just have to think about how much room you have and what makes sense to you when you pick threads for your newest project.

SuDu's Goldwork Tools and Organization

Sue Dulle is going to take a goldwork class and is getting the tools she'll need together.  Even if you aren't interested in goldwork, you'll love seeing the variety of scissors and tweezers she owns and how she organizes projects.

Here are the books she uses more often.

Here is another book she really likes plus a bit about her first goldwork class.

Here are websites with plenty of goldwork and silk and metal designs to admire.

The Six Drawer Thread Storage Cabinet

The NJNA blog just mentioned this six-drawer thread storage cabinet.

I can't tell if it is solid wood (although it looks like it) or the type of wood it is made from, but this is a good price. Of course it will have to ship from New Zealand....
