An Antique "Tapisserie" Presentation Box From France

Thanks to the Embroiderers Guild of Canada, I discovered this antique needlepoint box from France. Dated to the late 1800s, it was intended as a gift for a new stitcher and includes wool skeins, a frame, patterns, spools of thread and tools.  The only item that is lacking is a pair of scissors.   I am not sure what the board below the frame is for, unless it is a table mount base for the frame itself.  There are two turned pegs on either side of the frame, so probably the frame slots into the pegs and the pegs fit into the base to create a table stand.  Other views of this treasure are available by clicking on the thumbnail photos to the right of the large picture or by running your cursor up the row of photographs.

Ecclesiastical Embroidery Booklet Available

Mary Corbet has an interest in ecclesiastical embroidery so a friend of hers sent her a great little booklet about the church embroideries decorating Liverpool Cathedral.  Since the booklet is available for purchase and there is a website that talks about some of the collections described in it, Mary talks about the pamphlet in detail on her website.  This is for fans of embroidery and gold work, particularly that stitched for cathedrals and churches.

Fun Fur from 1887

Thanks to Needlepoint for Fun's newsletter, I discovered this blog written by the Engligh embroiderer Sue Jones featuring a tutorial for replicating a Victorian fur stitch .  It is from an 1887 publication called "Dictionary of Needlework" that has been republished by Dover.  I don't think herringbone stitch is particularly easy to do but this would be fun to try if you need neat rows of fur.

Perf Paper

Simple samplers on perforated paper used to be staples at antique shops when I was small. I remember seeing lots of variegated red letters with solid green accents on them.  "Home Sweet Home" was very popular, as was "Welcome" and "Sleep in the Arms of Jesus."  Now there is a new company selling very high quality perforated paper for various small items like ornaments, bookmarks, name place settings, etc.

Sage Stitchworks used to sell perforated paper motto sampler kits but the company has gone out of business. Luckily they still maintain a blog with examples.  These are as close to what I remember seeing as a young adult forty years ago as I can find.

Historic House, Complete with Needlepoint

This historic Missouri river house is full of needlepoint in the parlor, thanks to the owner's keen eye.  Richard's restored house is a museum and showcase for his antiques business.  Most of the needlepoint is antique but occasionally you'll see something he stitched for the house.  These two articles showcase needlepoint in the ladies' parlor.
