Threadaholic Alert: New Painters Thread Ribbon Floss Colors

Thanks to Homestead Needle Arts, I've learned that Painters Threads ribbon floss has four new colors:  Ivory, Ebony, Poinsettia and Holly (aka, white, black, red and green).

This is dyed Shimmer ribbon floss from YLI per Homestead.  Their other colors used to be in skeins.  I'm not sure if only the four new colors are on spools or if Painters Threads is starting to use spools for all their ribbon flosses.

If you aren't familiar with Painters Threads, you can see the range of what they offer in many types of thread in the same colors here.

Can't Find YLI's Metallic Ribbon Floss?

Suzanne says that if you need YLI's Metallic Ribbon Floss but can't find it, you can substitute YLI's Quilt Highlights Metallic.

Quilt Highlights Metallic comes on a 100 yard spool.  Metallic Ribbon Floss comes on a 14.76 yard plastic frame.  You might need to share with all your stitching friends if you go the Quilt Highlights Metallic route!

Thanks for the tip, Suzanne.

Sea Shell Santa (Janet Zickler Casey)

Brenda of Brenda's Needlepoint Studio is working another Janet Z. Casey Santa, this time the Sea Shell Santa.

By the way, the spools of YLI ribbon floss are the old packaging.  It's usually only available on the square frames now.  Metallic ribbon floss is a bit stiffer than the regular ribbon floss, so that may be part of the problem, or maybe this is just a really old spool of thread.

Breaking News: YLI is Discontinuing Candlelight

Ridgewood just posted that YLI is discontinuing Candlelight.
https://ridgewoodneedlepoint.com/2019/11/important-information-about-candlelight-metallic-thread/?fbclid=IwAR05lmQqOjZzI74ywTWhhpTsAZJi3EQ1y3C-f15M33hHF7PPaSlZ0ZNRCmM

Apparently the machinery that makes Candlelight, a braided soft metallic yarn, has broken down and cannot be repaired.

If you need more colors than Ridgewood has left, order from YLI or this big Brazilian Embroidery website.

The New (and Old) Painters Threads

Robin King is a big fan of ribbon floss as am I. This blog entry talks about YLI's ribbon floss types and how Painters Threads uses it for overdoing, then shows off the newest colors of Painters Threads ribbon floss.

Thread Substitutes for Needlepoint Now Tulips

Since I mentioned Needlepoint Now this morning, it's a good time to mention that Needle in a Haystack has gone to the trouble of finding appropriate substitutes for threads used in two recent NP Now projects--Merrilyn Haazelwood's Tulips and Daffodils pieces.  Merrilyn is in Australia and some of the threads she used are difficult to find.  I've certainly had my favorite color of Kreinik go out of production just as I was finishing a stitch guide for which it was a Must Have, so I am very sympathetic to poor Merrilyn's plight and that of the folks who love her flower garden pieces.

Painter's Threads Meets Ribbon Floss

Painter's Threads Overdyed Shimmer Ribbon Floss

What do you get when you cross YLI's ribbon floss with Germany's Tentakulum Painter's Threads?  You end up with overdyed ribbon floss, of course!

Here is YLI's website, the page where the description of the varieties of ribbon floss start.  Ribbon floss comes in regular, metallic, Shimmer (which has a bit of metallic woven in--this is the type of ribbon floss Painter's Threads has overdyed), and heathered (which looks rather tweedy and thicker than the other ribbon flosses).

This is Tentakulum's website, with links to all the threads they manufacture.

This link shows all the current colors of Painter's Threads in overdyed Shimmer ribbon floss.  I am told this is available from YLI if you are a shop owner looking to order.

This close-up shows some of the new Painter's Threads Shimmer ribbon floss as well as the regular ribbon floss in the old tube packaging.  If you compare the regular ribbon floss tail end with that of the new Painter's Thread overdyed Shimmer ribbon floss, you'll see the dyeing process makes the overdyed thread a bit less ribbon-like.

YLI now packages ribbon floss wound around flat rectangles of plastic (which you see at the top of the first photo) but you will still find ribbon floss wound around cardboard tubes as well.  I put the mesh tubes around the tube ribbon floss to keep the spools neat.  They don't come this way but I didn't have any of the old style of packaging I hadn't opened.

Amy Bunger's Halloweenies Home Study project used Painter's Threads overdyed Shimmer ribbon floss on the Devil character.  Here's a picture of Melinda's finished Dev L. Mann.

Many thanks to LR for sending me these lovely threads to show off to you and use in my stitching.
