Something You Won't See at the Coronation

Something you won't see at King Charles III's coronation is the sacred annointing of oil.

Here is more about the screen.

There is more coronation embroidery news on this part of the Royal School's website.

The Duchess of Needlepoint

While looking for something else online, I ran into this mention of Ellen Ordway, "the Duchess of Needlepoint."  She stitched a lot of rugs, and designed and stitched a magnificent Alice in Wonderland screen which you'll see here.

I wonder where that screen is now….

The Alice in Wonderland Screen

The fabulous English needlepoint designer Anna Pearson was sent photographs of a three-fold screen needlepointed with Alice in Wonderland scenes.  The screen is dated 1944 and is in all tent stitches, probably in wool, although where someone would find wool thread in wartime Britain amazes me.  Perhaps this was started before WWII and the yarns already put aside.  Click on the photos for a better look.  Thanks for sharing, Anna.  This is a great treasure!

Vintage Needlepoint Spotted in the Wild UPDATED

Meg saw these three vintage needlepoint pieces at the Ringling Brothers Circus owners' home, Ca’ d’Zan, located in Sarasota, Florida.  There is a huge six panel screen, a pair of matching upholstered chairs and a card table.  The chair behind the card table may or may not be needlepoint.  I cannot tell.  Use the side arrows to see everything.

Thanks, Meg!

UPDATE: By coincidence, this morning a friend sent me this very well written explanation of why the author rescued a piece of needlework and what it means to do so.

Time to hit the thrift shops to rescue the lost!
